View Full Version : N800 Navigation Kit availability?

Does anyone have an idea when the N800 Navigation Kit is being released in Europe? Some previous discussions [1][2] mentioned March 2007 but not sign yet on the navicore or nokia online shops.

(I can't find decent contact links on the Navicore or Nokia sites, I thought I'd post here since I'm sure others are also wondering...)

Thanks for any info...

I guess it's late, which is sadly par for the course (still waiting for the case - "due in Q1").

Yeah, I'd been hoping to get ahold of it before April, but that certainly didn't happen. Q1 is over guys... I want my NA release! Especially since we already saw it demoed....

It is now being sold as an accessory. A bundled offer w/ N800 is in the works.

"Out of Stock" probably just means "Not Ready To Ship Yet." I just posted my analysis, (http://tabletblog.com/2007/04/nokia-navkit-for-n800-on-nokiausacom.html) especially mentioning the lack of terms like "car mount" and "Bluetooth GPS receiver."

Compared to Garmins and TomToms etc, is Navicore any good?

What are the chances you can hack this to run on the 770?

thoughtfix

From what I've been told, There's already an EU version for the 770, but it was never released with US maps. It looks like you're in LA from your profile, Tweak (I love that South Park character) so it may serve you well to wait for a version with US maps to be released, then to ask Navicore.

Merlin: I had TomTom Mobile 5 on my last Smartphone and LOVED it. It's just great. I will be ordering and reviewing this for the N800 the moment it becomes available, so will take include a comparison to my experiences with TomTom Mobile 5 and CoPilot Live Q Edition.

That is around 225 CDN. Much too expensive for just the software, I dont think it should not be over 100 euros...

FYI,
I took delivery yesterday, all working straight out of the box. I'm not too sure about the CR-86 windscreen mounting contraption, too big and bulky for my liking. They did package a velcro-type-sticky pad that is probably intended for fixing the GPS receiver onto the dash, but I might actually use it to fix the N800 up beside my car stereo...

Does the GPS unit have a magnet?

Does the GPS unit have a magnet?

No magnet that I can detect. The bottom surface does have a thin rubber ring running around the edge which seems to be enough to get it to sit still on my dash.

04-19-2007, 10:06 AM
Ah, that's unfortunate. The GPS I have been using has a magnet, it's just so convenient to put it on any metal surface in the car (in my car there are plenty).
Thanks for checking, it's good to know. I just have to ponder a bit to decide if I'm buying this kit or not.

i just recieved my navicore software, i already had a gps unit so i just bought the software only. It works GREAT, i used it on the way to work and threw about 5 or 6 direction changes (shortcuts that i knew about) and the software adapted within 15 secs. it even knew for a newly built divider down the road. i know that there are faster units on the market but ive never had one before and it works like a dedicated unit. one thing you need a 2 gb sd card not a 1gb like the unit says. actual program size is any where between 1.4 - 1.9gb. but once installed everything works great. only thing my impatience missed out on is a vehicle mount but oh well i can get that later or make something work.

Hi,

Can you tell us the version number from the 'Menu/About product/About Navicore Personal/Version' ?

I have the 770 version on my N800 and updated it with the http://update.navicoretech.com/ service to v2.2.076.
I am curious whether it is the same as the official n800 version ?

Thanks,

i just recieved my navicore software,

does any one know of a good vehicle mount?

fldude99
04-24-2007, 09:42 AM
The one from boxwave works pretty good, except you have to turn the mount sideways as the N800 is too wide for it. But works real good-windshield mount is very secure

You're kidding!? How can you run the program on a 770 and still have much room left over on a 2gb MMC to add much else? Do they ship out the software loaded on an MMC card already? So, do you have to swap out your MMC card with that one whenever you want to run Navicore? What if I wanted to listen to the MP3's on my card while using Navicore?

I use Navicore a lot here in the Middle East on my Nokia N80i and it works real well.
Back in the states I used TomTom on the same N80i and it worked well too.

Navicore make core navigation software products that OTHER navigation companies wind up using in their own "branded" solutions.
Looking at the official Nokia GPS receiver I see that it's actually BIGGER than my Holux GPSlim 240.
I'm going to wait a little while and probably wind up buying just the NA software for it. But I'm kind of partial to using offline maps with Maemo Mapper on the N800 to map out my properties mostly due to the satellite maps.

i just ordered software only so i didnt recieve anything other than a cd for installation. but as far as the sd card goes all the maps and voices are on it and theres the main program on system memory the main program is only a few mb's. So i would assume that you would need to use a separate sd card for any other type of media until larger cards are avail. (what about a pda wallet, they can hold extra sd cards)

i have a n800 and i a newb so i dont know anything about the 770's. actual size on the sd is 1.4gb with only one voice 1.9 with all voices

Yes, the format is text-based.
Navicore also provides software (Windows) for this.

I have been using this kit for a few days now, and I have to say it's pretty good. It's not as good as my Garmin Nuvi, however it does have it's benefits.

Pros:
The separate GPS receiver allows me to put the receiver outside on the window ledge and then sit inside my home and plan/play with the navigation routes.

The speech patterns are some of the best I've heard.

With my license key, I have a lifetime subscription, and I am able to download every country/region at no additional cost. Amazing!

While mounted to my car, the Tablet dims if you are stationary for longer than your preset time and re-illuminates when you star moving again. This saves battery life and the hassle of turning the unit off and on all the time.

The battery life of the included GPS receiver is amazing. I have only charged it once and it's still going going strong after almost a week.

The mounting kit is pretty flexible allowing for numerous vewing angles.

I like how you can search the points of interest that are near where you are, or "anywhere".

Cons:
It was very hard to get set up. It literally took me two days to figure everything out. There was a bug that kept the measurment in metric until I downloaded the fix for it.

No text to speech

It sometimes takes a minute or more to lock onto the satellite.

I don't care for the lime green background on the main screen.

You have to save your home as a favorite. You can't just declare a home base address.

The points of interest leave a little to be desired.

Customer service was very helpful, however they are CET, and if I call them when they are closed (most of my normal busines hours) the calls kept saying they could not be completed as dialed. Maybe it was just a fluke, but I did finally get through.

Overall, I am pretty satisfed with this unit. I don't know if I would have paid $200 for it knowing what I know now, but it is a pretty decent option to have if it's a second unit or if you just have to use your internet tablet for navigation. I guess having a Garmin has spoiled me.

Hope this helps someone out.

Hi, Where did you download the fix for the metric measurments?

TIA

The fix is downloading the Todd Belcher voice. After a powercycle, it will fix itself, and you are free to use whatever voice you choose.
