Hello, I am very new to internet tablet devices, i'm interested in purchasing the Nokia N800. My question is, can AIM or Yahoo instant messenger run on the Nokia N800? If so, how would you go about installing it?
Thank you for your time.

No, AOL and Yahoo don't make their own client software for the N800.
However! There is a program called gaim that is a multi-protocol IM client that's available for Linux, Windows, and the N800. I haven't used it on my tablet, but have used the Linux and Windows versions several times. Nice program, and as I said, it's multi-protocol, so it can talk with AOL, Yahoo, MSN messenger, and others.

the "real" version is now called pidgin http://www.pidgin.im/
For the iT version just go to the garage or the new downloads.maemo.org to configure the appropriate repository

if your tethered to a 3g phone, does each message count as a text message?
GAIM supports many protocols, including ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and others. You have to install GAIM itself and then each protocol support individually.
I'd suggest that you get a jabber account and then you can complement, via the Jabber "gateways", the use of Gaim and the use of the Messaging tools already present on the Nokia N800 (mainly initially Google talk oriented) and have total full messaging capability from your Internet table.

The jabber protocol is very flexible. If you a sign up for a jabber account you can connect to the msn network WITH YOUR MSN ID using a "Transport".
I chat with my msn contacts with my n800 using the default IM client and I don't need to install GAIM or other client.

that is for Gaim 1.5 I think. search for the Gaim 2.0 thread if you want to install that.
