90% of the posts in here because too many words are used to explain stuff and all this Lynix stuff is lost on me... but... I love it when people post actual commands to use in X-Term... for example in another post I wanted to know how to install kismet, dsniff, aircrack, etc... and I was told to go read pages and pages of stuff which wasn't malicious because the guy tried his best to help me BUT I rather have been told...
Load X-Term and type the following...
sudo su -
password? <enter>
sudo gainroot
apt-get update
apt-get install wirelesstools
apt-get install kismet
apt-get install dsniff
apt-get install aircrack-ng
apt-get install aircrack-ptw
Now my question AGAIN is... HOW DO I CRACK WIFI??? I want simple command lines to use in X-Term... I don't care to know HOW it works... Just want to get internet access outside when all the WiFi is locked. I tried typing in "dnsniff" and it says it is "listening" to "0wlan" or something like that... WHAT do I type next?

If the InternetTabletTalk gods are willing, I think a tutorial section in the forums is appropriate. It would be very helpful for people like me to get up to speed.

I don't care to know HOW it works... Just want to get internet access outside when all the WiFi is locked.
But that's just it: If you don't at least have some understanding of HOW it works, it won't always work! If, for example, you sniff a locked access point, you may get lucky and pick an AP with lots of traffic, which generates lots of weak keys, and then aircrack can crack them for you. You may also get an AP with essentially no traffic, and then you'd have to perform packet injection to get the AP to spew enough weak keys. Or, the third possibility is that you'll sniff a WPA-encrypted network, with a good, strong key and not be able to crack it in any sort of reasonable time.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for explicit instructions, and try to provide them myself, but just blindly typing what I've found on web pages has gotten me into trouble before - accidentally formatting the wrong partition as a newbie, deleting important files, etc..., because my setup was different from what's on the web page. You still have to stop and think about HOW it is going to work before you SHOULD proceed.
Finally - beware that connecting to anyone's access point without prior consent (even open AP's) is defined in the US as theft of communications bandwidth, and is a federal felony. There have been prosecutions, mainly when individuals were using the AP's for illegal purposes, but it's still something to think about. If the prosecution can show that you had to crack their WEP key beforehand, my guess is you'd have a much more difficult defense than if you connected to an open AP. I'm not a lawyer, and I don't think the LEGALITY of using open access points matches the ETHICS (i.e., I don't feel it's unethical, even if technically illegal) of using such an AP, but who wants to be a test case and set legal precedent? Not condemning it, just pointing it out!
Again, you still have to stop and think about HOW it is going to work before you SHOULD proceed.
And I second the motion for a Tutorials section - or maybe a sticky thread to a maemo wiki page of tutorials?

First, there are several sites with explicit instructions on how to use airodump, aireplay, and aircrack to break WEP keys. We should probably have a tutorial section, but let's not reinvent the wheel.
However, secondly, I'm chiming in with gsagers. It looks like euchreprof simply wants to blindly break WEP keys to use networks that are trying to keep him/her out. I'd go a step further than gsagers: if you are breaking something without consent, that is indeed unethical. Just because you CAN enter someone's house certainly does not mean that it is PERMITTED or that you should.
Go to your local coffee shop or public library and use their networks. You've got permission there!

No, I specifically said OPEN access points. If someone has encrypted it, I don't feel that should be legal or ethical, if it's open you don't know whether it's intentional or not, so it shouldn't automatically be illegal. Best advice, though, is to only use those you have permission to use.

If a resource is protected in any way, by default or design, breaking into it gets one into dangerous territory. Therefore I disagree with gsagers' assertion above. It is in fact flawed logic (assuming I read it right, which I'm not sure I did).
This isn't my forum, and I may be in the minority, but in my opinion this isn't the forum for such activities or related discussions. It's Reggie's call of course, but I'm sure he realizes there could be liability ramifications in allowing such dialog to go unchecked. I urge everyone to not put Reggie at such risk, and take such discussions elsewhere.
If I'm out of line, and Reggie says so, I'll shut up on the subject.

first, you have to expect a learning curve with anything new you try. though you have experience, however limited, with windows you must understand that linux is different and you have to learn how.
second, there is an ethical issue in cracking wifi, that no one here will support. you have expressed malice aforethought, not security based understanding. you want to steal internet access by defeating measueres intended to prevent theft of service.
if you were looking for information on how security worked and willing to learn new things, the story would be different. good luck on your search and i hope your script kiddie ******** is banned here.

Just to be absolutely clear (maybe what I typed above has a logic flaw!), I do not support or condone breaking encryption to get at someone's wifi. Neither ethical nor legal.
I'm not saying you should hijack a neighbor's open AP either! Use AP's you have permission to use!

euchreprof, if you want things to "just work" without taking the trouble to understand anything about them, I would suggest that you stick to Windows, or at the very least to the preinstalled apps on the Nokia tablets.
Babysitting you, as you *demand*, would be twice inefficient : first, a waste of the time of helpful, knowledgeable people retyping and dumbing down information that is readily available elsewhere, just because you are too lazy to look it up ; second, because at some point in those instructions something might (will) go wrong, due to a typo or small difference between the writer's setup and yours, and then you still won't know what to do and come back grumbling and whining for more.
Some things take learning. Do you also want us to teach you to play the guitar and piano in 24hrs without any effort on your part ?

LOL Wow what a reaction. I thought these program were made so people could use internet on the road when every internet connection is locked. Maybe i am not geek enough or even business like to think this is a huge problem. All I know is these programs exist and I want to use them like all the other Lynix pro people. I do not believe for 1 minute the Lynix pro people don't use these programs to check their email in a desperate situation. Equal rights!

How am I suppose to know any different... I am totally new to this and when I buy a Nokia N800 and see about 50 programs that people built for it and good 10% is what I percieve as HACKER programs... well I want in on it! Remember I am totally new to this and these are programs I come across. I did not make these programs. Am I wrong to assume these are hacker programs? If so fine but from a newbie's perspective sure sounds like it. I am just being real from my point of veiw and do not mean to make enemies on here, but I must be honest in what my intentions are. But I will not fight with anyone on here because quite frankly you all are teaching me so much stuff and I love this place.
PS: I have a 200mb/month data plan myself but it soooooooo slow. I rather use regular hi-speed wifi and if I ever learn to crack outside wifi I will!! Burn me for this if you wish oh well.

I did noticed this is how it worked on here but instead of learning how to break wifi in the next 6 months by reading endless pages I just wanted to see if someone could give me a few simple command lines to speed up the process... I wasn't holding my breath cuz I did notice how everyone operates on here... some people protect their repositories like it was gold. Why else does it take me 2 months and searching all over the place to come up with 25 repositories when it could have taken 1 day on here if some "Lynix user" just posted all of his? As a newbie I rather oldtimers make it really really easy for me instead of making me earn it. I got got a family to take care of and a wife who is not pleased I spend so much time on here.

A hint: you first imply that ALL "Lynix pros" probably engage in illicit activities-- now you allege that only 10% of the N800 programs demonstrate such intent (I find that too high). You claim you're just "being real", but that isn't reflected in your statements on this subject.
Just curious: how old are you?

I am 37. Married and have a 4 year old daughter. All I want is high speed internet when I am on the road... sometimes I get into unlocked wireless networks and sometimes all of these are locked... I know it is wrong but I sleep soundly at night. About the percentages of programs which are hacker ones... whatever the percentages... there are atleast a half dozen in a small amount of total programs on maemo. As a newbie... this got my attention to the possiblities. I have been using Windows for 20 years and never came accoss a hacking programs... but out of 50 on maemo I see 6 of them and I am a child to want to use them?

Bottom line, no one is going to help you when you explicitly state you intend to use these tools for illegal purposes. If you said you wanted to do some penetration testing on your own network that would be different...

LOL Wow what a reaction. I thought these program were made so people could use internet on the road when every internet connection is locked.
No, that's not at all why those programs were made.
When on the road you'll find basically three types of networks:
1) Open, free ones.
2) Open (as in non-encrypted), but you have to go through a https web page and register and pay. Common in airports (although some airports use scheme 1), which is better) and also to cover big areas of some cities.
3) Private networks. Your regular home-user, or some office's internal wi-fi network. Stay off from these. Always.
Stick with 1) and 2), and only use those mentioned tools for _legal_ security research issues. Usually 2) at least are easy to find, that it may cost money isn't a reason for cracking someone's private network.

euchre, you just aren't listening. It's not necessarily that we WON'T give you instructions on how to "crack wifi using kismet, dsniff, and aircrack-ng", but rather that we CAN'T.
THERE IS NO ONE COMMAND LINE TO OPEN UP EVERY SINGLE ENCRYPTED WIFI ACCESS POINT. THERE ISN"T EVEN A SINGLE COMMAND LINE TO OPEN EVERY WEP-ENCRYPTED ACCESS POINT.
OK, GO BACK AND READ THE PASSAGE ABOVE UNTIL YOU BELIEVE IT- IT'S TRUE!
If you really want to use programs like this, you'll have to take the time to understand them. The options you have to pass to each program depend VERY MUCH on what type of network you're probing the security of. I can't just say type "dsniff -cdn -i eth0" and you can then use it. Unless you know what the options DO, you won't have any luck.
Regardless of whether you, or we, feel that your actions are legally and ethically right or wrong, just blindly typing commands that someone else won't get you anywhere. These tools aren't a script-kiddie "Type in the IP address and I'll run every possible exploit until I get in" tools. Each has a purpose, and they fit together well, but they're not automated, and you'll have to understand the options.

So basically you have to play by rules set by people who provide answers, not the other way around. Got it? There is one result of all your talk. Most people will think twice before helping you and then just forget it since most likely it will be just waste of their time.
Looks like there is nice article worth of reading. You may read whole article as many chapters apply directly to you but here are some specific pointers
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html#before
and there is even one question in the "Questions Not To Ask" chapter similar to yours
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html#id272074
Look whether u all like it or not u r all going to CONTINUE to help me out... the only thing is I won't be doing the asking but I read every single post on here for the past 3 months (and a year before that) and I get the help I need... it's a bit slow for my liking but I do learn from you people... The timing works like this... a member does READ READ READ and then is stuck on something and posts about it and then *I* get lucky when someone responds to them in PRACTICAL TERMS (nothing beats a command line in X-Term). It does happen this way on here... but RARELY. Oh well, it's been like this all this time and regardless of how many apple carts I upset it will remain the same for me. Look at my posts compared to the amount of time I spend on here... just like 100 guest constantly cmpare to 10 users logged in... this place is about reading and lucking out when you can... all the newbies can see who runs the show here (OLD BOYS CLUB) and that is fine cuz you guys are the Lynix pros and all us newbies need u!! I am grateful to have u all teach me INDIRECTLY but judge u all ebcause of the lack of DIRECT support I get and soooooooo many other newbies get ignored too.

OMG There are 100 posts from newbies which are on here that got ignored from the Old Boys Club and they asked nicely... USE YOUR SEARCH BUTTON TEXRAT!! 2-3 of them were from me over the past 3 months and I never started trouble afterwares... until now... I wasn't about to ever get a simple practical response so I saw so no harm done here when I finally let me newbie frustrations out. Once I saw a post about getting WIFI through a BLUETOOTH PC and when I asked how I got ingnored. IF it can be done explain it to me... what do I type in? I DO NOT WANT TO LEARN ABOUT THE INVENTOR OF BLUETOOTH AND HOW IT DEVELOPED INTO A MAINSTREAM TOOL WE ALL USE TODAY... You bring up stuff to be smart (and you are when it comes to HACKING in Lynix) but then when asked to explain it to a newbie you are to lazy or too high on your horse to explain (eg. go read little boy).

Euchreprof's request for a simple answer in a complex problem reminds me of a similar trend close to my profession. When measuring human movement, more and more sophysticated technology is being used. Typically a report on a patient's movement problems includes several pages of specialised information that only specialists can understand. Against this level of complexity stands the surgeon who wants a simple answer from the biomechanist sometimes in the form of "do I transfer this muscle or not?".
The interesting development over the past years has been that rather than suffocating each other in public, the two sides are moving towards a solution. Biomechanists are now able to condense their findings and simplify the otherwise complex results. On the other hand the surgeons are developing an in depth understanding of biomechanics and begin to appreciate that their over-simplified questions are not valid questions.
The analogy may not be perfectly correct (as they never are) but I thought that the evolution of this off topic matter might be useful to share.

OK OK it's complex... but guess what... AFTER I LOAD X-TERM... give me the very next command line i type in... is it the word "dsniff"? WHAT IS THE VERY FIRST THING I DO? WHY COMPLICATE THIS STUFF? After you tell me the very first thing to do I will see what happens and have another question on what to do next... BOTTOM LINE IS IF I HAD A LINYX FRIEND AT MY HOUSE WHO KNEW THIS STUFF I WOULD LEARN IT IN 1 AFTERNOON even though it might have took him years to read read read and play the game with the Old Boys Club... You can try to tell me how complex this is BECAUSE IT IS COMPLEX WHEN U NEED TO LEARN THIS STUFF ALL OVER THE INTERNET, but if demonstrated for me then i could learn it in such a simple way I AM SURE OF IT! DOES ANYONE WANT TO PROVE ME WRONG ON HERE? MAKE ME EAT CROW I DARE U. See the only reason I am here is to learn how to run every single program I can download from maemo... I am not here for the same reasons KARL is. He likes to post a smilely after every single one of his posts... I want COMMAND LINES TO RUN PROGRAMS. We obviosuly do not see eye to eye, thus no help from him... I will say this... the programmers of actual programs are the most helpful ones... nix guy who did GAIN give command lines to uninstall the old GAIN... media converter guy gives command lines for his programs that are useful... USEFUL IS THE KEY WORD... THEY DON'T FIRST ASK THE NEWBIES TO GOOGLE "HOW TO PORT A PROGRAM OVER TO HILTON" BEFORE THEY WILL HELP US.

This has got to be the most screwed up thread I've ever seen. I know I'm new here, but not new to linux (see, I can spell it right), or wep cracking, or even wpa cracking. All the info you, the OP, needs is on the intraweb. There's even step, by step destructions. Most likely the reason no one will help you, other than the demanding way you asked, is they don't want to end up being an accessory to a felony. Connecting to a network without permission is illegal, period.

They never would have helped me or anyone else on this topic anyhow. I read every sinlge post on here and I know how it all goes down. My only hope (besides reading and hacking for 1 year before I get it) was to bring these facts to the surface and make an impression on some Lynix pro who knows all this stuff and who "gets me". It's a skill I used many times in my life... 99.9% goes against me but that 1 person out of 1000 likes my style = I get/recieve non BS support = I reach my goal. Never fails. Lynix is above my head but this pychological stuff is above 99.9% of the people. Go google how whales work together to find enough food to eat and take notes. It's all about surviving. You would think there was no possible way such a large animal could find enough food to eat on a daily basis but they do. It's impressive. Just like a Lynix idiot learning how to crack WIFI in 1 day.

To any Linux novice reading this: This sequence of commands will wipe everything off your tablet. It is the equivalent of the DOS command "format c:", except that it will not ask if you're really really sure about this (that's the -rf part; just google for "man rm").
Actually, if there are still Linux novices following this thread, google "man [linux_command_I_don't_understand]" is a quick and cheap way to learn some basic stuff about Linux command line.
Edit: Okay, what with the ROM and such, even rm won't probably get everything off, but I'm pretty certain it won't do nice things with the files in userspace and on memory cards.
And no, I'm not volunteering to find out...

Just different ways of reaching the final goal. I do see the need of some users who prefer to do first, get some positive results, and then pick up new knowledge from there. This gives them less steep of a learning curve as compared to having to read a whole lot before they can do anything. It is also less daunting and more encouraging. As a windows user, I find that Linux can be quite difficult to pick up, so having some (some!) easier way to do things to boost one's confidence will win more users.
Of course, asking nicely may have helped more, but perhaps he prefers it this way, which most of the people in the forums would not like. :)
Anyway, just wanted everyone to appreciate that there are many ways to the goal and how you get there, depends on your preference and resources available to you.

Oh heck, luke, I personally have no problem with what you just described there. I've pled for quick-and-dirty myself on occasion. I'm betting others having fun with this thread have too. But hopefully we Old Guys are utilizing a smoother approach. ;)
'night all.

90% of the posts in here because too many words are used to explain stuff and all this Lynix stuff is lost on me...
It's not Lynix.
It's GNU/Lynix!

It's GNU/Lynix!
Actually, it's GNAT/Lynix.
Yeah, anyone that insists on calling Linux "Lynix" after several hints (and even blatant corrections) is really going to appreciate the "quick-and-dirty" answer and be encouraged to learn more.
euchreprof, "Say Lynix one more time, I dare you, I double dare you ************!" "Lynix ain't no operating system I heard of! Do they program in C++ in Lynix!?";)
This guy is obviously a fraud. One of the Old Boys having a good laugh at our expense -- c'mon Karel, out with it already ! :-)

Well, we do know a certain poster did create another persona that then proceeded to insult himself in the third person... ;)

Wow.
If he had actually spent his time searching on Google instead of repeatedly complaining and insulting pretty much everyone on the board, he would have figured out what he needed days ago.
Just doesn't seem to understand that the people here are more than happy to help anyone that needs it, but they aren't going to do your work for you. Besides, it's far more helpful to understand what it is you are typing instead of just blindly typing away random commands.
Supporting the script kiddie nature of people like him is harmful because then they will keep coming back expecting... no, demanding the same thing time and time again instead of learning for themselves.

I think this thread has run long enough. So much flaming in it that it has become unhealthy already to the community. I'm locking this thread. Thanks for all your inputs. Let's all move on.
Thank you.
