Anyone interested, meego with call support has been released but is still LIMITED TO FEATURES and is jus for playing around with the preview.

READ FULL INSTRUCTIONS AND UNDERSTAND BEFORE PROCEEDING. YOU'RE DOING THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK
*although its not really risky at all.. but i've met some really dumb ppl in my last tutorial which is a shame on humanity*

Instructions

1) http://repo.meego.com/MeeGo/releases/1.1/handset/images/meego-handset-armv7l-n900/
download the 500mb image file *.bz2 File* and 1.5mb kernel file *3-n900 *

2) rename the downloaded image to meego and extract it using winrar to My documents.

3) rename "meego" in my documents to meego.img
and rename the kernel file to kernel simply kernel *remove the .-n900 part too*

4) https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download
download this and connect your N900 to pc via mass storage or use a cardreader *preferred* and use the win32-imagewriter to "Write" it to your microSD card

*IT IS VERY IMPORTAND TO REMEMBER TO EXTRACT IT TO MICROSD AND NOT THE BUILTIN OR YOU WILL CORRUPT YOUR eMMC*

5) http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-dev-env-downloads.php
download maemo flasher
install it
example you have installed the flasher in C:\flasher-3.5 and downloaded the kernel in C:\downloads
then restart ur pc, press f8 before you see the windows logo, choose "disble driver signature enforcement" then open start menu, search/run "cmd"

6) In cmd, type "C:\flasher-3.5\flasher-3.5 -l -b -k C:\downloads\kernel

then it will ask u to connect a device,
turn off the n900, wait for 1 min, then press the "U" key on the n900's keyboard and THEN connect the usb cable WHILE PRESSING THE 'U' KEY.
then you'll see the kernel being flashed. after its done, remove the cable and wait for some time for Meego to boot up.

*I CANT MAKE THIS ANY MORE NOOB FRIENDLY*

BTW the moment you switch off your cellphone, the meego kernel will go and you'll be back to maemo.
IF YOU WANT TO USE MEEGO AGAIN, FOLLOW THE 6TH STEP AGAIN

BEFORE PERFORMING THE 6TH STEP, MAKE SURE THAT THE BACK COVER IS ON. *Thanks to Stskeeps
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=827620&postcount=15 *

*REFER TO THIS POST IF YOU HAVE KERNEL FLASHING ISSUES http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=834244&postcount=50*

*Dont forget to thank ;)*

then restart ur pc, press f8 before you see the windows logo, choose "disble driver signature enforcement" then open start menu, search/run "cmd"

this is the cute for the 64bit version
but if u've wasted one usb slow, then next time, u need to connect to a different slot.. coz the drivers for the previous slot are already installed..
jus..
change the usb port/slot.. whatever

If it has no light, you have forgotten to put on the back cover or there's something wrong with the way you dd'ed the image.

It has been always with my device so that during MeeGo boot there is no backlight, when the MeeGo Gui is loaded the light goes on. So was it also with this version. It functioned but no keyboard functions available.

Hmm just wonder about this:

"Dial one outgoing call, accept by other party, terminate this call (phonesim, GSM & WCDMA) (GSM and WCDMA cannot be covered until real modem supported,Will use phonesim to test before real modem support) "

Notes (bugs):
"Nokia N900 modem does not turn on in Ofono. But with Phone SIM working?"

What is the difference between "phonesim" and modem :-S

isnt ofono API used in both cases? (I mean in both cases using the modem driver as backend)

Also this: "Browsing website over 3G " Is this because Nokia still doesnt have an open driver or is it because of lack of OSS maintainers to implement it before codefreeze?

http://wiki.meego.com/Quality/HandsetTestReport/N900Acceptance20100927 is more accurate - 0924 was before things had finished up on friday (0924.4 is an image where it works in)

We didn't get UI implemented for GPRS setup, simple as that.

Browsing website - I've been knee deep in browser **** for the last five days, so we're working hard on that one.. (Weird interaction with gcc4.5 and mozilla)

ok i got a problem here... i thought it might be because of the flasher so i also downloaded another beta version. both failed with that msg. I strictly followed the instructions. The errorlog from windows 7 (32 Bit) gives that below the picture

that kinda error is coz of drivers *usually/mostly*
perhaps u should try removing the old drivers as well
or try a different pc
u can also look for a tutorial for using a live linux disk for flashing..
i'd help u out but i dunno how to use linux either so you'd better look for a tutorial.. its the easiest solution..

wow not bad, looks like it worked with ubuntu. then download the flash tool with .deb as ending, execute it with just double click on it, after that, you can go to console and directly start with flasher-3.5 and so on (does not need the directory of the file) also what is different, is the fact that you have to give him the full path + filename when selecting the kernel. so my example was this:

flasher-3.5 -l -b -k /home/tebsu/Desktop/kernel (because i placed my kernel directly on desktop) everything else is the same :)

(maybe you can add that note to the initial post so other people with the same problem have the solution direclty

I extremely doubt that the performance is that good. MeeGo still is not ready to make it your main OS (or even secondary). For now, it's only something that users will mess with for 20 minutes.

I have diskwrited the raw image to the microsd card. Then flashed the kernel. With winxp and win7 both 32bits OS
The phone starts loading stuff then prints a lot of mesgs complaining about "something /var/run/system_something no such file o directory"
I will try to catch the whole message.
after that shows a "login prompt" then black backlighted screen.

I have tried it more than 5 o 6 times.
any one with the same problem?
thanks

EDIT: It is:
Failed to open connection to "system" message bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket no such file or directory"

latest 1.1 (1.0.99.xxx) branch weekly works and latest 1.2 (1.1.80.xxx) branch weekly doesn't due to a dsme bug. It's fixed now though, so the next weekly should not have that problem. Weeklys are out on wednesdays.

beta version of what??

i tried on windows xp on the other pc, n got the same result :(

You don't need to know anything about Ubuntu to use it.

If you can burn an image to a cd or usb-stick and boot your windows computer from cd or usb, then you could follow the linux flasher instructions. Nothing about your computer needs to change (except maybe setting boot order in bios).

When you quit and remove the "live cd" (or live usb) (as it's called when you can run an os from a cd) and reboot, your computer will boot into windows again as if nothing happened. With a live cd your hdd(s) don't need to be used at all.

its solved bro :D
i place the kernel file in to the installation directory of the flasher
then i type

flasher-3.5 kernelfile -l -k -b

then, the flasher run normally :D
it can boot to meego, i use the 24sept release date
so laggy but can make phone calls n send sms :)

thx for helping all :)

I didn't believe what http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/N900/Install/MMC said about preparing MMC directly with N900 and I think it is most easy and fast way =)

You need N900 with ssh server (or you must be typing guru) and MMC inside phone.

You need also package bzip2 and root.

On phone
Be sure MMC is not mounted. (umount /dev/mmcblk1)

cd MyDocs
wget http://repo.meego.com/MeeGo/builds/1.0.99/1.0.99.2.20101019.1/handset/images/meego-handset-armv7l-n900/meego-handset-armv7l-n900-1.0.99.2.20101019.1-mmcblk0p.raw.bz2

root

bzcat /home/user/MyDocs/meego-handset-armv7l-n900-1.0.99.2.20101019.1-mmcblk0p.raw.bz2 | dd bs=4096 of=/dev/mmcblk1

Download size is about 500M. Unpacking and writing takes 11 minutes.

Then flash/load related kernel from PC and boot. There are not anymore need to press any key when booting.
(i.e.
shut down phone
PC: flasher-3.5 -l -k <kernel> -b
connect PC<->N900
wait
wait more)

It boots very long and it looks like nothing happens, it is totallly black. After several minutes light will go ON. And then it continues booting.

It is slow and there are many things missing, but MeeGo works on N900!

Things I didn't manage on MeeGo:

*How to see running applications?
*How to switch between running applications?
*How to quit applications (e.g. music player)?
[Shortly: Dashboard?]

*How to enter PIN (or is phone calls supported on this version?)
*How to use sudo? (password?)
*Is there any repositories enabled to test more applications?

Has the latest version got all the icons in white ?

I thought calls could be made now, ive got the latest build running incredibly slow I might add but it could be my memory card

I tried to phone my phone and it rang but the phone didnt do anything (but maybe that was just the lag)

im using 1.0.99.2.201019.1-2

it could see my wireless and a few others too (neighbours wifi) it reports some as correct and some as incorrect

write the image to SD again.. then flash again.. wait for 5 min..

Ok, I will give a try to night again. Didnīt waited more than a minute.
For the backlight problem you can mount the SD on a linux OS and run this:
echo 255 > /sys/class/backlight/acx565akm/brightness
That will solve the backlight no lighting
Got it from here:

I think it's a safety thing, I booted Meego today (using a mac and a linux laptop and these instructions http://http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/N900/Install/MMC)

There is a warning at the bottom of the page that states their reasoning for having to flash the kernel every time. Doesn't bother me much, Meego 1.1 is just a looksee, 1.2 should be pretty good and this gives me heart to wait until April.

when i use image win32diskimager to write the raw file to my sd card after completing my sd card is unreadable is asking to be formatted and the files size of the sd card has changed from 4gb to .1.5 gb in windwos 7

is this correct or should it be readable in windows ?
and how should the file structure look like after its finished ?

Yes, this is correct behavior from windows - it can't read Linux partitions by default so it lists them as unreadable.

I guess there is not a lot to show that you haven't already seen - the UI is a little buggy and kind of quirky though it works okay - beneath that is a surprisingly pleasant Linux distribution that has a bit of everything in familiar places - far more capable out of the box than Maemo - at least for anything not needing X anyway.

Put your N900 into mass storage mode and type
dd if=/path/to/meego-image.raw of=/path/to/n900/sdcard

So if your N900's sdcard is /dev/sdd the second half of the command should be of=/dev/sdd

Find out which is your N900's sdcard by running fdisk -l and seeing which disk capacity is the same capacity as your sdcard

I tried to write the meego 1.1 image onto my micro SD 32 GB card using the win32 disk imager but was unsuccessful. it was throwing the error "An error occurred while attempting to write data from handle error 8"...i tried many times but got the same message. I also formatted my micro SD card in my N900 using the file manager and then tried using disk imager, but received the same error. I am able to use the micro SD card in my phone without any issues. My PC has windows 7 home basic edition.

I also checked out the diskimager site for this bug and i saw one user posted that if file name contains "-", it will produce error 8... i also renamed the image without any "-" and but no use. Can you please help me to install meego image onto my micro sd card? thanks for your help in advance.

ok this is what i tried just now.... i connected my n900 to my pc using mass storage mode and in windows explorer, it listed the N900 drive(built in) and removeable disk (16 G micro SD card) as another drive. I just copied the latest meego-handset-armv7l-n900-final-mod-1.1.0.0.20101101.3-mmcblk0p.raw file to the micro SD card through the explorer copy menu.

Then I installed Uboot PR1.3 in my N900 that is supposed to boot the meego automatically from micro SD card upon switching off and for some reason it booted to maemo only.

I am not sure if the windows copy is the right way to copy the raw image to the micro sd instead of using disk imager as mentioned in many sites. One thing I noticed that in explorer, the micro SD card file system is FAT32. Last time I formatted the micro SD card in my N900 using File manager, so I guess that is fine.

Can you tell me where is the issue here ? and what I need to do to boot to meego.

I have installed uboot after multiboot. when you break uboot booting process into uboot prompt, and type "run noloboot" with the keyboard slide open.. multiboot menu will appear. But... Once you select menu other than os that used maemo's kernel ... uboot kernel will be overwrited by OS you've choosed, and finaly uboot program needs to be reinstalled to make it works.
