What software would you really like to see on the 770 that would increase your interest in it or even cause you to run out and buy it?

A silly thing I'd like to have is Neko.

-- I had it on my Mac and I have it on my Tungsten E.

Here's my list:

1. Soduku (join the craze! LOL)
2. Salling Clicker (http://homepage.mac.com/jonassalling/Shareware/Clicker/index.html)
3. Gamin's Nav app (http://www.garmin.com/products/sp340/gallery/pt-sp34001a.jpg) or TomTom's (http://tomtom.com/lib/img/screenshots/GO-700-3D-US.jpg)
4. Word, Excel, Powerpoint viewers
5. Good backup app

Opie Reader

It handles HTML, Plucker, my current iSilo docs, and a host of other formats. Combine that with the affordable price of the 770, and I would stand in line to buy one.

A VoIP application like Xtens X-Pro/eyeBeam is a must.

What I want more than anything I'm hoping someone will reply and say "It already has it, ya monkey"...

VNC client. I want to use it to control all the other machines around the house (Linux, OSX).

Everything else would just be gravy on top of that. :)

;-)

Oh how I hate waiting for products which are readily available elsewhere!!

Here's one I'd like too:

QComicBook 0.2.4 (Default)
http://freshmeat.net/projects/qcomicbook/?branch_id=55600&release_id=203330
>>>QComicBook is a viewer for rar, zip, cbr, and cbz format comic book archives containing JPEG or PNG images. Its features include automatic handling of archives, full-screen mode, page scaling, and mouse or keyboard navigation.

I know that there are already Contacts and Notes, but a complete organizer application would be very nice.

"...that would increase your interest in it or even cause you to run out and buy it?"

Well, I'm going to run out to buy one, anyway. :)

Yes, I nice contact/calender/notes/todo app that can be synced with evolution on the PC so you don't need to double enter everything would be sensational :)

Hmm....

OggPlay - Quite possibly the finest music player in the world, ever.

TCPMP - The Core media player on Palm OS - could be nice.

A decent chess game with the ability play against other 770 users across the world, not just 20ft away (are you listening, Sony?)

Oh, and if we're sorting a keyboard for this thing, a word processor is a must have, especially given the size of that lovely, lovely screen.

Now I *know* you've been squinting at that PSP too long, Mas. Have you forgotten we've already got AbiWord?!

There might be another too. I'm going to contact a dev to inquire.

I totally agree with this. By enabling the calender/contact/notes/todo on the 770, it will act as a PDA too. 770 will be a dream machine which full fill these dream machine criteria:

1. Linux OS...hopefully more stable than window.
2. Changeable battery...which use nokia charger available everywhere....
3. USB host function.
4. Simple PIM function...at least sync with evolution....
5. Ebook reader..most important factor for me.
6. Multimedia player device....wont limited by battery life since it's battery is changeable.
7. Memory....may the rs-mmc may bit expensive....
....

Any way, since i didnt hv a real hand on, i dont know about the button lay out. I use a lot of PDA before, and now using nokia 4150. I am pretty frustrated by the small directional pad on nokia 4150, very hard to press though the thinness is impressive. I prefer large directional pad and large button..so no need to use finger nail to operate it. Any way, i will use it as simple PIM manager and ebook reader.

Just my 2 cent.

I think we should have a P2P client.

eDonkey -- http://www.edonkey.com -- is available for Linux. But eD2k (as it is known) is rather slow unless hundreds of people are hosting a file and online at that time.

What I prefer is LimeWire -- http://www.limewire.com -- which, alas, requires Java! Yet another reason why shipping the 770 *without* Java is a mistake. Nokia, are you reading this?

What P2P do you use, and which do you think could be easily ported to the 770?

For me the killer app will be able to use this it as a remote for music being streamed from my desktop. There are a good few ways of getting the music around the house now, but short of the Sonos package nothing to be able to easily select what's playing. My dream is for a iTunes-remote running on the 770 in the lounge.

Am I missing something but why put a P2P app on a tablet, there majority of the files used will be streamed over a WLAN?

At linuxadvocate.com, there are several interesting apps, including Studly, a flash-card app:

http://linuxadvocate.org/projects/studly/

There are also a GPS map app, a Gnome font sampler and a Gnome screen ruler. Any and all of these would be great on the 770, but especially Studly, since I have a use for that.

Ereader is my program. I hope Nokia has the power to bring that program over. It looks like they did it for symbian.

I really need ereader everything else is optional. Maybe some classic video games would be nice. I like spy hunter, archon, and joust.

So far the games seem to be those that hvae been open-sourced. If you've seen these on Linux, there's a chance you'll see them on the Internet Tablets, I suspect.

Ereader was originally a Palm format right? From what was once Peanut Press? With Palm going to a Linux OS, I think this may well get ported, but who can say?

Best thing in this case is to write the ereader folk directly with info about using the 770 as an ebook reader, IMO.

As linux is the net OS a do hope for a "PCanyware" prog. It would be nice to sit in my coozy sofa and access my "downloadingPC" to se how it's going (and be able to download/start new torrent's and so on).

The n770 is a good bookreader and I hope it will be a good comic reader too;

Here's one I'd like too:
QComicBook 0.2.4 (Default)

I have 20GB of cbr :)

Not a port, but a hack: A wee thing to turn *off completely* the screen's backlight. At least in the unit I fondled, there was no way to do so. Don't need the backlight when sitting in a park on a bright sunny day just reading an ebook. Might also add an hour or so to battery life!

There are a few applications I'd like to see.

Top of my list is -- regrettably -- a closed-source, commercial product: PhatWare's Calligrapher handwriting recognition (http://www.phatware.com/calligrapher/index.html) or even -- dare I dream? -- the whole PenOffice. Unfortunately it's a Windows-only (both desktop and WinCE) product, so...

The other one would be a port of Gournal (http://www.adebenham.com/gournal/). Or perchance Evernote (http://www.evernote.com/en/)? Again non-free I'm afraid, but at least one of the developers once told me in a mail that a Linux version was "under consideration".

In case anyone wonders about my mental sanity: I used to be a Newton geek. :)

I already emailed Apple in regards to this idea, but what about having a port of iTunes?

You plug your iPod into your Nokia 770 through the USB port, load up iTunes Jr, connect to the iTunes Store, buy or download whatever you want through your 770 into your iPod.

It doesn't check to see if your audio files are in the 770's library (and thus delete them when it finds they are not) ... iTunes Jr should be set to "add files only" and never delete them.

Thus, it never asks itself if the 770's records match your iPod's records, so it never deletes what it can't find like it does normally on a standard PC when one of our songs goes missing suddenly and then gets erased off the iPod without my permission. I hate that.

With iTunes Jr., we could still purchase stuff through Apple's site, we just wouldn't need our computer, or any computer at all, in order to actually USE our iPods. I hate that they made the iPod so PC-centric, but this idea would free up the iPod for full-time supercoolness.

In my humble opinion, anyway. Thanks for your time. You also have many great ideas on here already, keep them coming! :)

Oh, and how about a new version of Kazaa, like ... Kazaa-lite LITE!

Or a new version of Napster called the Nipster? Or Napnip? It's the catnip of P2P, small but addicting! :)

Or how about something called the P2P Pipsqueak?

Or... Tiny Torrent?

Peer-to-Peer Pressure? Huh? Whadya think?

Okay, okay, I'll leaving.

Bye.

I'm just dreaming of the day when the 770's application catalog can rival that of the NSLU2 (ostensibly just a network-attached storage device), which currently has 6702 packages available (http://ipkgfind.nslu2-linux.org/).

If you want command line/remote access stuff only (since the NSLU2 doesn't have a display/touchscreen etc.), the 770's already got more than the NSLU2: 15490 packages (http://packages.debian.org/stable/).

You can even get them working without root. Admittedly, a nice apt port & GUI would make it easier, but the software is there.

Precompiled binary packages, that you can just pull down and install through something like apt-get, without having to compile the source in scratchbox yourself?

If so, that's pretty sweet -- but how do you access them? I see /etc/apt/sources.list on my system, but no apt-get... and dpkg doesn't appear to have the apt-get-like functionality of ipkg on the NSLU2.

Check the Maemo in-progress section. They're trying to port XCOM (UFO Defense for the European folks). You have to supply the original game's data files but otherwise... oh mama.

You plug your iPod into your Nokia 770 through the USB port, load up iTunes Jr, connect to the iTunes Store, buy or download whatever you want through your 770 into your iPod.

Is that possible? Most USB devices are master or slave *only*, I thought. Is the USB port on the 770 capable of being both? It *is* possible to be both, but it was my understanding that, at least at one time, most devices were one or the other only.

I have a Garmin GPS (376C) that apparently can be both because it uses the same USB port to both talk to a PC *and* talk to its XM radio (yes, you get a little XM puck from Garmin that actually is the radio, but it has no interface...the interface and even audio output is on the GPS).

It would be cool if it were capable of going both ways since in theory that would open it up to using USB devices on it (including the iPod scenario you describe, but more importantly to me things like USB GPS's). Heck, it would be pretty cool to hack the Garmin XM puck so you could use the 770 to listen to XM, too!

Yes - however, at the moment it's a case of dpkg -x somepkg.deb /var/lib/install (and for all the required dependencies). This could be optimised, however, by install apt and configuring packages which are already present in the device (e.g. libc6 etc.)

I've used this to install Perl, screen (including its dependent ncurses) and a few other command line bits & bobs without recompiling them in Scratchbox.

If you've got root access, you can change /var/lib/install to just / and avoid any problems with config files etc. (no pun intended)

What about some kind of a MIDI device + Sequencing software program like Fruity Loops?

Plug our music keyboards into the 770 and lay down tracks, all without a real computer setup?

If you have a portable keyboard, then you can write music anywhere you go.
