[Announce] Faenza for N900 - Icon pack

Hi folks,

I have finally got this icon theme to point where I was happy to then package it up (with some much appreciated help).
This is now in extras-devel and can be installed via FAM or HAM.

Kudos to tiheum @ deviantart for his Faenza icon pack, which a lot of the icons in this package are from.
Also thank to Andrewfblack for his contribution too. Andrew is working on some smilies which will be added to this pack once he has some time to finish them.

As time allows I will be adding more icons to this pack.
I have made quite a lot of icons for the many applications available.

If you have any applications which you would like an icon made for under these theme, please post your requests in this thread and I will try to oblige.

I also have a backgrounds folder for the Applications Categories icons, but unfortunately, that is a theme folder so you will need to copy and paste these into the backgrounds folder of the theme you are using.
eg. usr/share/themes/theme-you-are-using/backgrounds
Once you have done this, you can use d-iivil's theme customizer to save as a new theme so yo don't lose thos background images if the theme updates.

Some applications also use the pixmaps folder for their icons so you will need to do the same with that folder which can be found in usr/share/.

Nice work, however the 'display' icon in the first screenshot looks very similar (identical actually) to the Nvidia logo, which I think is copyrighted. If so, it should be swapped with a graphic that is freely distributable to avoid (however unlikely) legal issues.

on mine it doesn't work atall, so I myself us ApMefo and put it to hicolor by myself.so for folder inside menu,ApMefo can read it.
I don't know, how it come doesn't work. even I restarted hildon-desktop nor restarted the device it self.

Excellent job guys! I use Matthieu James' Faenza icons (http://tiheum.deviantart.com/) on my main machine. It makes my Macbook Pro's OSX UI look old and dated in comparison. Linux has really come a long way!

Just posting a reply to some questions/suggestions I got so folk can have some idea what to expect in any updates.



1.battery bar doesn't suits for this pack, its looking ugly and cheap. need to change with HD battery icon bar
That battery icon is (apart from some minor size tweaking) straight from the Faenza icon theme and I wish to try to keep as much in line with that theme as I can, so I won't be changing it. Of course, you guys are welcome to modify your icons as you see fit.


2.singla bar as well, now which is default, need to replace with better one and unique
The signal strength indicator might be an addition if I can work the Faenza style one in. The Faenza one needs quite a bit more space than allocated to the standard hicolor icon in the status area.


3.in menu many icons are missing: app manager, Noor, Quran, sketch, opera, fmms, document to go: doc, xls, ppt
App Manager itself has a new icon, the icons inside it don't yet, but may soon. Opera is on mine, but I have done so much swapping on this, I will have check what happened with that icon.

As for Docs to Go, they have their own icon folders so I can't do anything about that. You will have to mod them yourselves, although the mimetype icons for those document types are already part of the package, but DTG uses it's own installed icons.

If you want an icon for a particular application, it would be great if you could run a query in terminal to find out where the icon is kept and it's sizes. Saves me having to research the package.

The query I use is:

So hopefully you get output like:

4.in settings, many icons are missing: wi-fi singal applet, lense cover reminder
I don't think there are 'many' missing, but as I said, I will do what I can when I can, and do hope to update those couple in settings and a few applet icons.


5.why dont you include background and pixmap icons in this icon pack combined them, as now you have attached seperately in forum nor noobs its a hassle.
Unfortunately, I can't include them as they are not part of the icon directory. The backgrounds need to be part of a theme installation to be automatically installed in that way. The Maemo.org theme has those background icons as default I believe, so try that.
The pixmaps folder is another story again, and if someone tells me how to include it in the theme then I will, but I don't think it easily do-able.

I noted that the call icons don't appear to show properly on my device. Dialled calls show with the same postage-stamp icon as 'sent' in mail and inbound calls show a down arrow (not customized). Not sure if this has been reported yet, or if it's an area still in progress, but though it wouldn't hurt to mention.

Yeah nasty. The problem is the use of the same icons for sent mail and outgoing calls. Guess I will have to remove that until I can sort something else out. Looks great in the email application, but quite stupid in the phone app. Well spotted.

An update will be very soon.

Just updated with a few more icons and although I removed nearly all the general_sent icons, I missed a couple in the 32x32/hildon, 24x24/hildon and 16x16 folders.
I will fix that next update obviously, but in the mean time you can navigate to it in filebox and delete them. Or just wait. Or use another theme/icon set.

I've made a set of icons for the Game System Emulators but since I don't have all the emulators installed I need someone who has them installed to run the code below replacing nameoficon.png with the name of the icon. Yeah thanks. I made an update package but "again" missed and icon or two. Was trying to do to many things at once yesterday. I am just uploading vers 0.1.3-3 which will sort it finally.

I just installed it today and it runs fine. I've noticed people saying on here that unintalling and then reinstalling applications sometimes gets them working after a firmware upgrade, have you tried that with Catorise?

Oh and good work with the icons btw :).

I think distributing it in a gpl licensed package is dubious unfortunately. Plus, it isn't immediately obvious (unless you know your logos) that it relates to display properties. Why not use something like this instead (there are probably better examples out there)

Added additional icons for a number of applications and bluetooth statusarea icons. Removed gps icons for status (just too busy for the tiny size req.)
Thanks to andrewfblack for the game console icons.
Tweaked icons for other apps. (eg. fmms, blessn900, fennec)

2) icon theme doesn't suit the cell-modem-ui app, that now shows a question mark (i.e. the information section in settings) instead of the default n900 icon for the tablet mode.

3) the "@" icons in the phone app are very ugly (see screenshot) and not suitable: why an email icon for the phone contacts?

4) the fapman icon seemed a download manager at first sight. Why not the default one?

I optimized the icon-set by removing *fapman*, *control_device_setup*, *general_brightness*, *general_sent*, from /opt/usr/share/icons/faenza-n900-icons :)

I have been trying to make a "faenza" style icon for the control device setup, but haven't as yet. As you have done, you can just delete the icons you don't want to allow the stock hicolor ones back.

That @ is a mistake on my part. I removed it from an earlier build but somehow it has snuck back in. Just flakey file management on my part. Will fix it now.

I hate the stock fapman icon.
It is a package manager, hence the use of a package manager icon :)

I will sort sent icon. I wish they hadn't used the same icon for email sent and calls outgoing.

I have mentioned in an earlier reply in regard to the battery graphics that I wish to keep as close as possible to tiheums original Faenza icon theme for linux desktops, and those are his battery icons, which I happen to like actually.
As with everything, it is personal taste and I am not going to be able to please everyone.
You can easily revert back to the original battery icons by deleting the 11 faenza theme ones in
/usr/share/icons/faenza-n900-icons/scalable/hildon or alternatively, replacing those icons with ones you prefer.

I am fully aware of that. It's due to server updates so the DNS server isn't configured correctly right now. I'll fix it when I get time.

Of course you can make your own ones. I had a tweaked tasklaunch_sms_chat one to include with the next update as well so you may want to look out for that if you allow an update. It will overwrite existing.

Anyway, I noticed that my pack is missing a 32x32 and a 26x26 of the general_email but it wouldn't be that causing the issue anyway as it would have taken one from the hicolor folder and it would have been immediately obvious.

I have attached both the general_email and tasklaunch_sms_chat in 512x512 if they are any good to you.

The gPodder one is the default faenza icon theme one, and as for the others, as is the beauty of the n900, you can change things to suit yourself.
I will be including improved status area icon updates, as I get time to do them.

Although using the faenza theme as a base, I have also tried to keep the icons somewhat in line with the original hicolor icons for ease of identification. The default general_sms icon is an envelop which is why I made that one, but just more of the faenza style.

As I said, at least personal choice can be catered for with this awesome device. Mod away!

Hi Cooler.
This is just an icon pack so you need to apply it to a theme. Have you installed theme customizer?
Once you install theme customizer, you will find it in settings once installed, that allows you to use any icon pack with any theme you like.

I am happy that you have made additional icons which suit your taste. As was said to me when I started this pack, you can't please all the people all the time. Taste is purely personal.

Well, excuse me, but those icons are straight from the Faenza icon pack, and unlike yours, they are scaled correctly (Which you seem to be incapable to do do). I may come off as blunt, but if the only contribution for this icon set is to copy someone else's work and rescale and package the icons, you at least better do it properly. So I don't buy this ******** about "additional icons" since I actually went and fixed something for you which you couldn't do properly in the first place. If badly scaled and disfigured icons are your taste, I can't really help you, but for everybody else's benefit, proper icons might be more appealing.

Also, your battery icons didn't even match the ones in Feanza icon theme itself, they lacked the gradient of the green part of the battery itself therefore looking like you had re-drawn them with MS PAINT or equivalent.

I'm not even mentioning the fuzzy scaling work on other icons, but they didn't stand out like a sore numb like the battery one, so I let it slide.


Taste is purely personal.

Uh, there are two things that irritate me when it comes to design, the design itself and technical execution. I can't really complain about design (eg. "taste") since everyone has their own. But I can do complain about the execution. And I can also offer my help on that. Which I in fact did, but I apparently got rejected. So, poor technical execution != taste.

Unfortunately, I have a lot more going on at the moment than dealing with complaints about voluntary work I have done, however so as not to be seen as ignoring you, I shall reply in as civil a manner as possible.
The icons I used for the battery status were straight from tiheums faenza pack. And yes the battery divisions had to be adjusted to account for the charging scale used by maemo. I noticed the set you made available have a green fill? Why is that? Faenza battery icons have a red through to yellow, yellow to green gradient.
Never mind. I guess that is just taste rearing it's ugly head again.

The reply I gave to your post clearly wasn't to your liking. If you were expecting me to jump all over it and update the package then and there, then sorry, I don't have the time or inclination to do so right now, and so didn't wish to say that I would.

You might have noticed there has been NO development or additions to this icon pack for some time. That is because I don't have the spare time to do it currently. I was on annual leave when I first put the pack together and as such had more time.

As to the "I know the graphics are not going to be incorporated the the iconset especially after the rant," you are probably right. They don't properly match the Faenza theme I am working off. However, if they were to display the colours in the faenza samples attached then they quite probably would. (Once again, when I get the time to do it.)

one thing i'm missing, i've installed the tablet/phone mode control. the "tablet mode" shows only a questionmark icon after choosing the icon pack in theme customozer. the one for the "phone mode" is the old one and ok.
