Add the shortcut to your desktop as normal. It is called "facebook", not "sociality".

Actually what i want to do is replace the facebook icon in the symbian anna icon pack with the default facebook icon that sociality uses.

People say here that they miss the white background. I must say that I like the black background. Maybe some other colors are not harmonized with the background, but I like to have a dark theme instead of lighter ones, which damage your eyes in the end.

Anyway, the feature I miss most is the "More" button. Well, being absolutely sincere I also miss the possibility to use it offline. But that isn't as necessary as the "More" button, in my opinion.

Keep up the good work MAG, and do whatever you like, of course.

I got to agree. The app is amazing, only thing that I like less is the appearance. The best is getting one good color pallet and be using that for the whole application. Stick to it and lighter colors, black text over white is easier to read then vice versa.

Why not just stick to default blue-ish/white Facebook theme/UI layout?
I bet someone put quite some effort in designing it, so it can´t be that bad, right :p?
Apps on other platforms as well as Kasvopus also follow this design and we see how popular it is by the repeated requests here in this thread..
I think it would be great for Maemo if there where a Facebook App that actually looks like a Facebook App ;-)

if you just scroll through your friendlist to tag people you can tag as many as you want but if you search for people via keyboard just the last one you clicked is marked.i think it's a bug which could be fixed in later versions.

beautiful app, looks very clean. While viewing photos, you have to go back to album view and click on another picture to view it. Swiping needs to be added to photo view for going to next or previous picture. Seems pretty solid so far

Places stopped working for me ... worked well a week ago ... now i do get a gps lock, but there are no entrys shown when i tap "check in"
also no more check-ins of friends are shown ...

has this something to do with the launch of the new m.facebook.com.site? touch.facebook.com now redirects me to this crappy new mobile site and i can't check in there either (can access Places page, where it says "share with your friend where you are" but there's no button to check-in anymore ... this worked fine with Firefox mobile 4 until now :mad:)

I'm really looking forward to the next update MAG, enjoying Sociality very much at the moment.

WRT chat, will it be opt-in or will the update mandate that you set it up? I always stay offline when on facebook, and I thought that facebook chat was already able to be set up in conversations. Anyway, my main concern would be that I can continue to appear offline for chat while using Sociality.

I was too lazy to make a new delegate so I just copied it from my mediaplayer rewrite.
The second line is meant to say 2 new requests under Friends etc, but that's not implemented yet.

Looks great for something done in three days. To me it just needs a little tweeking, like the notifications should countdown the way it should, notification button would look better as a bar, the menu buttons should be a pinch smaller (10-15%), the over all look of it should kind of resemble the FB site in stead of using the phone's theme colors. Maybe a vibe function for the notificatoins? (That would be cool). Keep up the awesomeness! :cool:

I'm wondering how to implementing marking notifications as read, should all notifications be marked as read (ala facebook.com, iOS, android etc) when the dialog is opened, or should each one be marked as read when the user clicks it?

Would it be possible to have a mixture of both? What I'm thinking could be useful is make the notifications 0 once the user clicks on the notification bar, bit show indiidual notifications that haven't been clicked on appear as unread (but obviously they don't count as unread).

This would make it simple to see which post/response to click, IMO.

At the end of the day, I'll be happy with whatever you decide.

Spot on, and as the user reads the "unclicked notifications" they revert to the same colour as the cliced ones. If this is not so easy to implement, and I had to pick, I'd rather all notifications being cleared in one go as per facebook.com.

Great app, once again MAG.

I note a lot of chatter about UI design etc ; but I think this the flow is fine and it keeps in line with the rest of the N900 application. A similar layout and design to the Fapman app list is ideal (I recall it was yourself MAG who offered a patch to space out the app listing).

A very, very simple change to implement that would go a long way to improving the rendering for some folk is to use Volume +/- to alter the font scale ; one of the Twitter apps had this functionality (I forget - I haven't used Twitter in ages!) and it was superb. Made a huge difference to readabilty depending on your environment (outside, dark room, morning and wide-awake, night-time and struggling to keep your eyes open - you get my point!).

Personally, I like *both* Sociality and Kasvopus.

Ditto. :( You can always use Phonon, which I found to work OK. I have found that QMediaPlayer (via the QML video component) works on Symbian, but not with Maemo. I think the solution may be to set a cookie jar for the QNetworkAccessManager, but I haven't got round to trying it yet. I'm not sure how you would get the QMediaPlayer instance to use the cookie jar when making the HTTP request. I think it will be possible using QDeclarativeNetworkAccessManagerFactory, but that doesn't apply in your case.

BTW, if you are using the code I posted to get the YouTube url, you might want to take a look at the updated code, as I have since updated it to enable playback of videos that normally require age verification. :)

As things stand, I have no need to use cookies in cuteTube-QML. Videos play fine using any of the external media players. I'm only guessing that the solution for QMediaPlayer is to pass a YouTube cookie when making the HTTP request to play the video. I can't think of any other reason why it doesn't work. When using QMediaPlayer, the YouTube server must be aware that the origin of the request is different from that when the video webpage was downloaded, but this problem doesn't exist when using other media players. :confused:

However, I was able to get the cookies for the videoUrl:

EDIT: No need to set the cookie jar to a new instance of QNetworkCookieJar. The constructor of QNetworkAccessManager must do this already. :)

It really makes the list lag a bit (until all friends load), not to mention it consumes a lot of traffic (aprox 2MB, which is a lot, at least for me, I'm on a 200MB/month limited traffic plan).

I mainly started this project three days ago cause all other facebook clients are lacking some features in one way or another, and it was a good way to start looking web APIs.

I plan to include all features (that I can include, I can't send messages using the API for some reason, so while the UI is coded, facebook doesn't allow it).

If something doesn't work (Notes and places for example), then it's not implemented.

Also, I'd appreciate some help with the icons before someone sues me :)

Depending on what the final name will be (I went with Sociality right now since it has the highest votes), the via Nokia N900 will probably change, though I am planning to have something like Via App Name for Nokia N900.

I click on "Check in" and a box comes up with "nearby" and the "done" button, but no locations show up and I can't check into anything.

I've read through this whole thread, so sorry if i've missed something, but if someone could put it in laymans terms that would be sooo helpful!

marxian, I tried switching to Phonon, and I'm getting the same result.
When I get the URL, I'm just doing a:

That doesn't seem to be doing anything (and Phonon::VideoPlayer lacks error reporting apparently...)

I looked at cutetube again and saw it's doing the same, though last I checked (a month or two ago), cutetube had a working built in video player.

Edit: oh and images (at least most of them for avatars and such) are now cached.

Any ideas?

The Python version of cuteTube uses Python's urllib to get the URL, but that's the only difference, and it shouldn't affect the playback.

I took a quick look at the source code, and the method used to load the video is the same as yours, so I can't see any reason why it shouldn't play. It might be worth connecting a slot to the mediaobject's tick(qint64) signal, and see if the current position of the video is changing.

It can play videos in Phonon well, and I passed the URL to QMediaPlayer manually and it worked, no cookies or forbidden stuff.

The source code did get me lost though, too many functions are tied to other classes

All that is needed is a small amendment to the URL in the parseVideoPage() method:

Ah, I see.

/usr/share/policy/etc/rx51/syspart.conf file is what needs to be handled. It's a simple conf file, check group [classify system] and add app path to it. Someplayer (and QRadio) already adds itself there to get CPU cycles.

Doing that you get sound even when pressing power button.

EDIT: there is also multimedia group, but with system group audio stutters are limited to the minumum.

I ended up going with iOS's tune, not sure why, anyway, it's configurable, and not embedded in the binary.

The chat feature is hidden in this version since I didn't work on it a lot (only goes online and shows friends now, you're free to enable it by adding experimental-chat=true to the config file (/home/user/.config/MohammadAG/.config/sociality.conf))

Uploading the new version tonight, a changelog (I think I didn't miss anything):

Notes implemented.
Single album or single photo download.
Fixed events item layout in portrait mode.
Attendees button now works in events window.
Friends window and news feed window use threading to improve performance.
Friends and avatars are now cached (/home/user/.cache/MohammadAG/sociality).
Cookies for facebook.com are now saved (/home/user/.local/share/data/MohammadAG/sociality/facebook.cookies).
All application menu buttons in the main view (Account settings, privacy settings etc...) now work (as per the iOS app, they redirect to facebook.com's site, since there's no API for this).
Notifications will now have visual, audible, and haptic feedback, clicking a notification will open the notification dialog, all of this is configurable in settings (audible notifications will not sound in Silent profile).
Youtube videos will now playback inside the application, if you don't like this, simply tap the title bar and open the link in the browser/copy it to your favourite youtube app.
News feed window shows links properly.
Places does not cause a segmentation fault if you click done without selecting a place.
A map widget will show when you select a place to check into.
Fixed a memory leak.
Delete button will ask for confirmation.
Experimental loading widget, thanks to cutetube for the image (this only shows in news feed for now).
Like button will correctly show unlike if the post is already liked.
Auto refresh implementation, configurable in settings (0 to disable auto refresh).
Notifications will be marked as read on facebook.com when they're read
Added a donate button to the about dialog

While testing on another N900, I found that Qt Mobility 1.2 doesn't mix well with the CSSU update, this only means one thing, the update will be delayed a day, a new CSSU update will be pushed, this will revert Qt back to 4.7.0 with some custom fixes applied on top, then new Qt Mobility libraries if they don't work well with the old 4.7.0 (which they should).

Sorry about this, it should've been fixed earlier :/

Reflektorfalke is right, resizing a real picture into 16x16 icon makes it impossible to identify. (I'd say only N900 users would recognize the picture since they are familiar with the pictures of the device). That's how then I came up with the 1st icon in this list which actually I took it from Ovi suit when u connect your N900 to a PC via USB.

I know nothing of Facebook's location API specifically, but I've heard that for other types of interaction with Facebook, such as contact synchronization, there exist both public and private APIs. Private APIs expose greater functionality, but their use appears to require contracts and cash. That may the case for location creation.

If you find an open source Facebook client that supports the creation of new locations, please provide a link to it.

Ah, but I didn't mean just for Maemo 5.

An open source Facebook client for any platform will be helpful if that client includes any features for which MohammadAG has been unable to find documentation. He wouldn't be able to copy code straight from, say, an iOS app written in Objective-C, but he'd be able to see how how that app communicates with Facebook. That would be enough for him to reimplement the features in Sociality.

I just updated Sociality to 0.2.0, and I can't get it to work from the Icon or xterm. I have done a reboot, and still won't start.

When using the icon, I get the splash screen which looks like the start page, and then it just exits.

When using xterm (/usr/bin/sociality or ./opt/usr/bin/sociality), I get the following error message:

/opt/usr/bin/sociality: symbol lookup error: /opt/usr/bin/sociality: undefined symbol: _ZN20QeMaemo5Notification16staticMetaObjectE

Anyone else have this problem?

having a bit trouble on your latest version....kinda annoying at first then i realize how to solve it....

now to anyone having trouble having to login every time you open this apps then do this step....

1.open facebook using microB & login to you account....
2.then go to privacy setting/apps & websites....
3.in the apps that you using go to edit setting....
4.in edit setting remove the Nokia N900 apps from it...
5.after remove closed microB & open sociality (facebook icon on your phone)
6.once open it will ask for you to login & permission to use sociality on your account...accept it then you will automaticly open facebook touch sites (dont worry about it, just press the back button & your done)....

if you dont follow this step (only if you having trouble as i am) then you see...

1.need to login everytime you open this apps....
2.you wont able to see news feed (keep loading/never stop) your proflies & etc....

I don't fill in dependencies manually, but rather let dh_shlibdeps fill them in based on what libraries it's linked to, for some reason q-extras doesn't return a version.
I'll add it in a bit.

GPS is only activated when the places window is open, so close that and the icon should go away.

Either close sociality when you're offline, or disable refresh, or keep an open connection.

Can I presume you have extras-devel still enabled since you installed Sociality? Anyway, make sure it is enabled, and do the following in xterm (note that the -s will not install anything, just simulate an install):

apt-get install -s q-extras


If the response from apt-get says that it will upgrade q-extras, just remove the -s from the last line above and it will install it (or if you're feeling confident, drop the -s from the get-go).

it seems you don't enable the extras-devel repo from HAM.
you could download the q-extras from this http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/pool/fremantle/free/q/q-extras/q-extras_1.0.7_armel.deb and install it using dpkg (dpkg -i).

Editing notes, no, not yet, but you can create a new note.
You might have location enabled for chat accounts.
Changing the background, yes, it can be changed right now through a config key that I decided to keep as an "easter egg", you can easily find it on the gitorious sources ;)

i dont use chat it's always offline :S
my n900 keeps searching for location for ever :| ,i'v disable the gps and location from settings and every time i reboot it's ask me to switch them back.
is there anyway to reinstall the whole update or restore the old libqtm-location ?bcoz i am really getting mad and thinking about flashing my device

the bug is regarding post/comment on a wall...
i try post a new status but somehow my status have been cut short...the same thing if i comment on my friends status...always been cut shorts...dont know if is a really bug on the apps but if someone else have the same problem then it is a bug...

yup...it will be nice if the profile picture is around 48x48 in size & the name at the bottom of every profile picture...
5 rows horizontal + 3 rows vertical will make it perfect view for our friends list...

Cheers. My perms were set to root:root, and this was after a fresh install...so perhaps one for the package scripts?

On a side note, would it be possible to get the zoom level altered perhaps? It's very fiddily clicking on the tiny fields, and unlike MicroB, I can't zoom in. :(

The "Remember this device" checkbox is almost impossible to hit, for example :(

I LOVE THIS APP!!!!! Now I don't have to go to the website. and now I can show off in front of people going on FaceBook. but.. I found a lot of bugs in the app, and I still am finding more and more after every use.

*Having the ability to search for friends on go through your friends' friends and add them would be a really cool feature to add to the app.

*The first bug is that the notifications don't work that great.
-When you tap a notification that says something related to a photo like "*** commented on your photo", it takes you to a blank page.
-Status updates should update without having to go open them.
-It says that so and so liked your comment or something, and when I tap it, it shows "Like (0)" when it was in fact liked when you see it on the computer.

*The second bug is the "Places". You are forced to choose a location from a list, and all what you get about the location from the list is the name.

*The third bug is the "News Feed".
-It shows links that take you to the web browser for photos when it is capable of opening photos in the app itself.
-You do not have a choice between "Top News" and "Most Recent"
-It forgets that you already liked some of them.
-It does not show when people are tagged in a status. The names should be in blue where you can press on them and it would take you to their profiles.

*The fourth bug is that I am unable to comment on photos that have not been liked or commented on yet.

*The fifth bug is the Messaging. It is not grouped into conversations, and you cannot open them or reply to them. What'z the point of it then?

**The sixth "bug" that bugs me MOST, is that I am unable to tag people in my status updates using the @ feature, while my friend's Android can. It should start suggesting friends' names once you start writing after an @, and tag them so it shows up on their walls as well.

Hope ur planning to paint the application if any coming version coming instead of the black dull screen.
If u just change the attribute color of the background & font and give those buttons new clothes to make it look more like Facebook :)

I did have a problem with my SMS notification sound, but I just went to settings, changed the sound, saved and changed back and all went back to normal. You may want to do the same with the LED notification settings.

Go to Settings->Notification Light, and toggle some of your settings. For example, if you have SMS notofication light set on, set it to off, save, set back to on and save.

Not too sure if it just my wifi and GPRS connection but I have difficulty loading my friends list, not a major problem but just wondered if anyone else had noticed this.

Again, in Places. When searching for friends to tag, i came across something pretty annoying. If you search for a friend, tap to select, and then you try to search for another, the previous selected friend is unselected.

Maybe you could add a TICK to select method ?

I like this app very much. But I must say again that I like the dark theme, though it's a little bit ugly (just a little ;D). I think is better for my eyes when using it . The white background is getting many votes and I just wanted to tell mine. Adding a theme customizer for the app would be the best. However it's harder to get that than leaving it as it is at the moment, and solving some of the bugs gets more priority IMHO.

In my case, the most annoying bugs are the go to a friend's photo by clicking a notification (shows a blank screen), that it's quite laggy when scrolling "News feed" (not really while scrolling but before that: it waits some milliseconds or so since I put my finger on the screen and start swiping up or down. It may not be a problem of the app itself, I think) and the "Loading" text that doesn't go away after you press "Refresh" on the context menu of the "News feed" part.

I offer myself to translate it to spanish if you can guide me on how to do that. Thanks MAG (infinite + 1 times already)! Your efforts are greatly considered in this community.

I agree, as I have said. The black theme harmonizes with the whole Maemo 5 OS. The white background just would like to be as his cousins from other systems.

However, I think people have modified themes on the OS and a white Sociality could harmonize better with them.

Yeah true, white mode might be fairly ugly, but what the heck, its an *easter egg*. So what do you expect? This means its by no means a polished UI layout...

But I agree, from my point of view its the white and blueish layout we need in order to get a "professional" looking FB app. Just look at the mock-ups provided earlier in this thread (mostly by zeiki). From my (non-developer) perspective its mostly about moving around and aligning some objects and giving the buttons a more aligned layout to get a decent looking app...To me, it doesn´t even matter wheter its is QML, C++ or whatever, as long as it works, has all required features and looks cool :cool:
I also think the app does not need to be harmonized with Maemo OS. Why should it? There are a couple awesome apps that don´t and I love using them (QMLtube, Tweet Suit, Instinctive) because they look cool and do a perfect job. I don´t care if for example the Maemo top bar is kept, but why don´t go all the way having a neatly designed app and just ignoring the "default Maemo design"?

But in the end its MAGs app, so he decides if he wants to complete it first feature-wise and polish it afterwards, or the other way around or whatever in between and how far he wants to go regarding features and layout...
Personally I trust in MAG that he will give us a breathtaking FB app in the end :D
