You can't have enough facebook clients can you?

I mainly started this project three days ago cause all other facebook clients are lacking some features in one way or another, and it was a good way to start looking web APIs.

I plan to include all features (that I can include, I can't send messages using the API for some reason, so while the UI is coded, facebook doesn't allow it).

If something doesn't work (Notes and places for example), then it's not implemented.

Also, I'd appreciate some help with the icons before someone sues me :)

Depending on what the final name will be (I went with Sociality right now since it has the highest votes), the via Nokia N900 will probably change, though I am planning to have something like Via App Name for Nokia N900.

(Just some quick tips, you can create a new album in Photos -> tap title bar, I noticed this was being requested a lot around the forums, you can also create events and embed videos in status updates).

if i'm not mistaken, this is part of facebook's security. just sign in to grant sociality access to your data. if you decide to uninstall sociality, log back into facebook and remove that app.

Meh, I forgot to install the icon (it was in the sources), should be fixed in the next upload.

The white window is an embedded browser, it should direct you to the login page, I actually tried to have a custom login window but it's against facebook's rules (since I could store the password that way...), if it's not working for some reason, try apt-get --reinstall install libqt4-webkit

I don't use roadmaps, but probably Notes and Places since those are the main things that are missing :P

Translation should be easy with Qt Linguist, I think I've wrapped all strings that should be translated with tr("") so it should already be translatable.

i've had some random crashes first was when i tried to open a picture in my album i pressed picture maybe 3 times and also when i tried likeing a post also pressed like button 2-3 times.

well done MAG. superb work. finally a fb app that has is actively being developed. kudos.

i tested it just now. i very much like what i am seeing. massive amounts of improvements to be made as it is still a bit raw for now but there is a lot of potential.

i particularly like the way the notifications is put in a nice little horizontal button at the bottom of the screen.

just a few ideas:
1. cache photo albums? also have an option to clear cache in case we want to recover storage space
2. the notifications button should be everywhere because right now i get say 5 notifications and i have to toggle back and forth to get back to the notification menu after i view each notification.

btw, those icons look familiar.....iphone icons?? :)

dude you are a ****ing legend !!!! this app is awesome !!! had 2 crashes so far, in the news feed, and the friends list, but other than thats, its the best n900 facebook app, and with a bit more work, this can end up the all-time best facebook app, btw having groups support is really nice too .

Agreed, I actually "disable" (or set maximum width to 790) to prevent horizontal scrolling the news feed window, I'll add that to the comments window to.

And yeah, I'm aware of the like issue, it's bugging me as well.

Hi MAG and Others,

I played around a bit and created mockup using more or less Maemo stock icons in order to keep MAG from being sued :p (See attached image below). Even though I am not sure if using those standard facebook icons is really illegal!? At least on other platforms all FB-Apps are using them an I dont know if they are all "official" apps?

Created a second experimental mockup for inspiration where I exchanged some of the stock icons for some less plain/simple ones...

Just to be on the safe side, verify that latest version (0.1-2) is installed.
And note that there is only a blue square as icon until reboot.
Actual Facebook icon appears only after reboot.
Further, be aware that the icon is labeled "Facebook" NOT "Sociality".

Currently it shows via Nokia N900, and that shows wherever facebook.com wants to show it.
I'll eventually release this for Symbian^1/3 as well, so I'll have to change the string at some point in time, OR make a new API key for Symbian so the N900 string stays the same (or becomes "Sociality for Nokia N900").

I was too lazy to make a new delegate so I just copied it from my mediaplayer rewrite.
The second line is meant to say 2 new requests under Friends etc, but that's not implemented yet.

Since links are clickable in the latest (not yet uploaded) version, I'd appreciate it if someone could provide help on how to get a direct link to a youtube video so I could pass it to a custom video widget (I know cutetube's source can help but I'm not that fluent in QML)

The places window will actually open and enable GPS, I've coded (disabled right now) parts to search for locations to check into, this won't be the easiest bit for me since I can't test it well (Israel's maps are white on GMaps' API, so the map will have to be a patch from someone, and the locations that show up are in hebrew for me.

Anyway, the new version should be up, just don't kill your battery by leaving the places window open :P

I use C++ code (QNetworkAccessManager etc) to get the url. I've attached a text file containing the methods. I basically use the get() method of QNetworkAccessManager and connect the finished() signal to a slot where the response html is parsed. You pass the YouTube link to the getVideoUrl() method. My YouTube class has a playbackFormat attribute which holds the stream format (5 or 18). This is used in the parseVideoPage() slot, but you could just hard-code a value if you prefer.

Note that it was necessary to create a new QNetworkAccessManager object each time the method is called, otherwise I would get a 403 response when attempting to play the stream (after the first video).

i get an empty screen when i pick places. i can confirm google maps has maps for my country.

4. switch connection to 3g
5. refresh news feed

i get an endless loop situation where the popup to ask me to select an internet connection keeps appearing even though i am already connected. no matter what i select, it keeps popping up.

if we make a status with these symbol will be an unknown symbol in microB....

I have just quickly tested it, and I think this program is already very good, and it could be the best facebook app, It's really ambitious! But I've found a couple of things:
- Comments and status updates are shown in GMT (I guess, would be good to be able to decide it or detect system region)
- UI veery laggy when retrieving data, like when displaying contacts list, news feed, comments, etc...
- 'Special' characters appearing as 'unknown' character (something about encoding?) (I use them a lot: áé,..., ¿¡ñ)

Finally, it would be great already if the mentioned in previous posts features would work, specially "search" option. In contacts list it would be good to be able to look for a contact just like in hildon's 'contacts' program...

Like several people pointed out, any symbols apart from pure latin are posted as questions. This single bug makes the app "read only" in any language apart from English. Could you please prioritize fixing it so that we will finally have a good FB app?

But, places does not open in new window and shows only blank screen with dark background.
Also noted that horizontal scrolling is enabled in events and contacts profile pics are not shown on message view (only in message detail view).

I've told a few people to run it from X-Term a few times first, then try running from the icon again.

I think they might enable it when their unified messaging system is enabled for everyone.

As for chat, I may consider it since I'm planning a Symbian release later on, use the built in client for now

don't know if this is a bug or not implemented yet but on pictures you can select an image but not show full screen. just updated to latest version and it's a lot more stable had no crashes starting from the icon so far :) Brilliant app :D

also in notifications if someone has remarked on a photo it does not show picture or remark and remains a blank screen.

but hey everyone mentioned it including it, it still needs more things to be close to perfect ( fb theme, viewing pics in fullscreen mode, notification bar can bu bulled out same way the download bar gets pulled down in cutetube-qml, places with google maps integration would be awesome, an option to upload pictures with it directly from the imag viewer app, an e-mail yellow notification look-a-like for facebook notifications that can work like push e-mail, ......) these are only suggestions .

Actually there is another Facebook client - it is called Kasvopus (http://kasvopus.substanceofcode.com/) and it was developed by Tommi Laukkanen. Just installed and had a quick look, liking what I see very much. Many of the features/enhancements I have in mind have already been suggested. Here are a few that haven't:

1. Full screen mode option - aside from extra real estate, one you implement fb theme pervasively, it does look better IMO.
2. More button on the bottom of the news feed
3. Notifications button has number of new notifications in brackets

It is in exteras-devel. However, if you want a client that is further along in development, give Kasvopus a go. Search for it in google ;)

after testing around 15 minutes without crashing anymore these is a few feedback that i can give for these apps....

1. a full screen view will be a nice features....
2. news feed - we can only view 21 latest news feed in this apps...older news feed cannot be view...
3. profile - need more development in these area but overall not bad....
4. friends list - no comment on that....
5. private message - if we cannot use private message then it will be much better to remove these features before more complaint about it...
6. places - still testing these features....
7. groups - need more development....
8. events - nice but couldn't view all event in the past & birthday event aswell....
9. photo - we can view a photo album but cannot view a single photo (implement a photo view will be nice)
10. notes - not working (in development i thinks)
11. status menu - only logout & about QT working...other such as add to favourite, account settings, privacy settings, help center & about are now working....

overall need a few more development...any more bug & features not working i will give my feedback later on....

Kasvopus worked well for me.But there is a bug sometimes that prevent the application to show status after I post new status.But this seldom happen.

M.AG's facebook application is better because of the simpler UI.Should be much more stable after few updates.

BTW I hope this side project don't slow down the Open Media Player project.

Because Icons are copyrighted you cant just use them you have to ask for permission. That is why MAG, look in his first post, asked for Icons so he doesnt have to waste time getting permission to use them.

I think you are still on the old version. Mohammad released a new version Sociality 0.1-3 and this fixes that 2 minute problem.

I have had it loaded for most of the day and it is working fine! I am also starting it via an icon and not from X-Term. Check out our Application Manager for the latest version. ;)

I would rather see contact synch left to Hermes for the moment. This has the benefit of allowing MAG to concentrate on the features that we don't have now.

BTW, Hermes not only works very well, but also has integration for other social networking sites (e.g. Twitter and LinkedIn from memory).

Is it possible to hook this up to the notification system? Something along the lines of getting a facebook notif, or a message and it vibrates? I might be asking for too much, but even something like a new message like window similar to how getting a text or a email or missed phone call?

I think one more problem i found is that if someone use special charaters in his/her status update, app doesnt show the rest of that text for example if some one puts in status " i ♥ world" it only shows "i". Awesome work on the app, any chance that you could implement it into the CSSU and then link the Nokia Facebook Widget to this app? This would make that widget a hell of a lot more useful then it is atm and also provides a full facebook app by default without having to search for another app.

Thus making this the default facebook app :)

The CSSU has one purpose, to replace packages irreplaceable through extras(-devel), since this can be installed easily, I don't see a reason to force all users to have it :)

Next version will have type to search in the friends list, and album viewing support, oh and all windows should have clickable names (right now, it's only enabled in the news feed window and the profile window).

I noticed something in the places feature. If you are at a place with a lot of marked locations, sometimes there is no chance to find the one you want to check-in. will it be possible to search for places in next versions?

Should include fixed time labels (time was shown in UTC instead of local time).
Basic photo album and photo viewing implementation (as well as reading (not writing - yet) comments).
Adding favourites to the main view, this is quite useless right now as I don't save on exit, this should be fixed later on.
Viewing photo albums of other users, tap the title bar and click photos in the user's profile (if you just noticed that menu, poking doesn't work yet)

The new version should be there in 15 mins (imports are done at :05 and :35 every hour)

Loving the photo viewer - works a treat. Being able to view the comments is great.

You don't have to login on each startup, but upgrades clear the config file in case the app needs new permissions, I'll do checks for that in later versions instead of clearing the config.

With last update, i still have to type in my email and passwd to login each time i start the app. Image viewer is working well :) Is it possible to make a preview image on the "Wall" to see youtube preview pictures and new photos and links etc?
And now I'm searcing for a cross platfrom app that support push messages to get instantly every info to my phone like sms, is it possible to make push notifications? Or anybody, do you know an app that support this and available to iphone, symbian and maemo ?

how do you copy and paste in this app? I want to copy the posts in facebook and send it to email or tweet it somewhere.

how do i copy or paste ? sharing is needed like facebook android apps which let you copy/paste anything inside FB clients or tweeter clients and share it to any app or even sms or email or bluetooth!

thats why i like nitdroid apps, for its sharing capabilities!

For those failing to find the shortcut to add to desktop look for facebook not sociality.

Mohammed, one problem (I think) is that if you view a new notification it does not mark it as read. Is this a known problem?

IMO Notifications button should not be displayed unless there is new notifications. Appropriate place for it when there is no new notifications would be upper menu. Same logic with new messages button.

Login should be handled through Maemo GUI to give user better feedback. I have to login every time I start app, maybe my app-rights on Facebook side are too strict?

Are items cached? Every-time I start app it feels like that it´s refreshing/fetching everything from Facebook.

Some status updates have (unlike) button even thought I have never ever clicked like anywhere.

Why jabber chat should be integrated to this app?

i have hidden some app from my news feed. i still see the updates coming from that person using the app. i don't see the same thing when i browse www.facebook.com

is there some filtering that's not working? or is this a bug in fb's graph API?

I have just installed and tested this APp, great app something to replace Effig status updater but maybe for the next release what is missing is the offline reading of Facebook status similar to the n900 Facebook Desktop Widget.. which reads out the status and displays on the widget.

I mainly started this project three days ago cause all other facebook clients are lacking some features in one way or another, and it was a good way to start looking web APIs.

I plan to include all features (that I can include, I can't send messages using the API for some reason, so while the UI is coded, facebook doesn't allow it).

If something doesn't work (Notes and places for example), then it's not implemented.

Also, I'd appreciate some help with the icons before someone sues me :)

Depending on what the final name will be (I went with Sociality right now since it has the highest votes), the via Nokia N900 will probably change, though I am planning to have something like Via App Name for Nokia N900.

(Just some quick tips, you can create a new album in Photos -> tap title bar, I noticed this was being requested a lot around the forums, you can also create events and embed videos in status updates).

I never said I fixed notifications not getting read, I don't know how to do it atm.

As for adding a place, I could link to a page but since I don't save cookies and such, you'll have to login everytime you want to add a place.

There is an icon in the latest version, it uses the name "Facebook" and uses the facebook icon from chat accounts.

I realized right after i posted my post.. there is no way to delete the post. If there was, i would have deleted my post though :)

There should be a confirmation dialog for deleting posts, just accidently hit the cross of one of my facebook posts and it was directly deleted.

MAG, this is a great app, has some great potential and amazing you got so much functionality into it in such a short amount of time. Top man.

Just got couple of things I wanted to ask:

I get messages in my News Feed timeline from friends app/games, stuff like their FarmVille prizes etc - is there any way to filter these annoying things out via the app (on a new setting maybe)?

Also noticed that the News Feed you can get so many entries (not sure if entry count or date/time limited) - is there a way of retrieving more of the older entries, maybe a "More" button at the end of the page, to retrieve another X entries at a time?

Click "Hide all by Farmville" and you will never see any notifications from that app again. Do this for each app until your newsfeed is clear on whichever device you choose to read it on. Sorted!

At first I was not convinced to change the post icon, but after trying to think outside the box, maybe the icon *might* gain a litle clarity.
I am everything but a graphic designer or a specialist, but an icon like the following would be nice too, isn't it ? Or does it have to be a square icon (16x16,32x32) ?
