View Full Version : Sirius on N800 via sipie

I'm listening to Sirius streaming online audio on my n800 without running any server on my desktop. I'm using the python script Sipie (http://sourceforge.net/projects/sipie) in particular this verizon of the script: http://eli.criffield.net/sipie/backup/1178140820.sipie
The script utilizes mplayer for decoding the sirius stream. I did a little hacking on the script to get it to work. The stream seems to be too high bitrate and there is a little skipping in the decoding but it has great potential. I'm looking for some advice from someone who knows more about the n800 platform - maybe some mplayer streaming options need optimized.

I am a total novice so I cannot assist with development, but I would certainly contribute money to making sirius available on the n800. Sirius has been a major reason that I could not get away from my pocket pc in favor of the n800. If sirius were available on the n800, that would be AWESOME!

I'll chip in on a radio.
I think there are probably lots of folks here who would love to see a Sirius app for the N800.

I will do my best to recall what I installed on my n800 to get a choppy sirius stream.
Apps to install:
xterm
mplayer
pymaemo
Python scripts to install:
sipie
BeautifulSoup
getpass
Mplayer options in sipie script:
mplayer -really-quiet -nojoystick -nolirc -user-agent NSPlayer -nomouseinput -ac dspmp3 -ao gst -cache 1024 -playlist
Any suggestions for myplayer options for a sirius stream on an n800?

Ok, I played some more and now have it working. No more skipping audio, even when browsing the web!
Using these options:
mplayer -really-quiet -nojoystick -nolirc -user-agent NSPlayer -nomouseinput -ao gst -cache 32 -playlist
These options are set in .sipie/config - this in is where my error lied I was editing the Sipie.py script and the config file's options were overiding the script. Luckily the script developer had some debuging which I turned on and magically it became all too clear my error.
There is no working GUI at this point. I really don't have the time at the moment to make this into a proper maemo package.
Good Job!
Now I just need to figure out what you did....
Thanks for the update.

This may be a stupid question...but what and where are the BeautifulSoup and getpass scripts?
Also how do I go about implementing all this???

Not a stupid question as far as I am concerned and a web search yields this:
"Beautiful Soup is a Python HTML/XML parser designed for quick turnaround projects like screen-scraping."
from http://www.crummy.com/software/BeautifulSoup/
(maybe for extracting info/links from Sirius site?)
"getpass - portable password input"
from http://www.python.org/doc/current/lib/module-getpass.html
(probably for applying your password to a Sirius site)
Just guesses on my part but I too am anxiously following this thread with an aim toward accessing Sirius streams on my N800.

Maybe a developer would pick up this project if there was some sort of bounty on it.
If everyone who would like to see a nice Sirius app on the N800 chipped in a couple bucks, it might really become worth someone's while. :o
Just an idea, but I'd donate.

I am all for that, I love my sirius & it would make the N800 a true killer device for me.
I'd gladly donate a few bucks, or help develop if at all possible (though I have no clue where to start).
There is an open source Sirius add-on/extension for Firefox that works well, it may be good source for ideas or maybe the developer of that project could be swayed to porting it to the N800/Opera ??
Check it out here:

Using uSirius and Tversity you can stream Sirius, but those 2 programs must be running on your home computer.

Same here!
Using uSirius and Tversity you can stream Sirius, but those 2 programs must be running on your home computer.
Also, you can use Orb instead of Tversity...I was intrigued by all the Sirius talk, so I started messing around with uSirius (and uXM, by the same guy). Once both programs go through and extract all of the URL's for all the channels, all you need to do is cut and paste each streaming URL into the "Internet Radio Favorites" on Orb by adding a new entry. Seems to work pretty well so far, and since I was already running Orb, figured I may as well use that instead of having another server like Tversity running...
The only drawback to these methods is the song and artist info is not diplayed, at least not for me. Not a big deal, but that is what makes SiriusWM5 on WinMo such a cool program - it displays track and channel info, as well as the original channel logos.
One other method of streaming Sirius, XM, and iTunes, etc. that I have been playing with once again is Nicecast on the Mac. What this cool app does is it captures audio from *any* application you have running (ie, Safari for Sirius and XM), and it reroutes it into your own personal or public Shoutcast stream. Of course, the default media player can stream Shoutcast stream without any trouble, so this works great for me. I can use VNC Viewer to actually get into my desktop and change the channels, plus I have the advantage of seeing what is currently playing, because I have the full interface of my computer.
I used this method a few years ago with my Treo 650, because it would let me listen to online sports talk radio and other stuff while I was driving to work in the mornings.
Hope this helps...but I still would love to see someone come out with a more elegant software solution native to the N800 and 770...
I think this could be as strong a buying point on the n800 as Skype. Nokia and Sirius should get in contact and do something big. I never even imagined something like this on the n800. Internet Radio, FM Radio, SATELLITE Radio!!! Thats amazing. Kudos to you, I would gladly contribute money to fund this whole project.

Just wondering has anyone else got it working? What problems are people running in to?
I agree there is good potential for a project here, if I wasn't so busy with school at the moment I would take on the project but I best not distract myself. It would be real easy to make a native python app for the n800 based on the Sipie program.

As far as I know, you must have a valid login on sirius.com (subscription) to access the Sirius streams. I think you can still sign up for a temporary account which would give you a free 3-day trial of the service.

I took the liberty of emailing Tanner (fellow who created the Sirius Yahoo widget) to see if he was interested in tackling this job with some funding support. BTW, I would be happy to kick in as well, as a feel a Sirius tuner for the N800 would be absolutely fantastic!

What would be the ideal feature set of such an application - I don't use yahoo widgets, so I'm not sure what that app looks like?
Would people be willing to install additional applications like mplayer and python if they were used for such an application?

volume control
mute button
on/off switch
channel scroller/selector
fetch 'what's on' data from dogstarradio or whoever is providing it
standard or premium streams
favorites/alerts
ability to use Sirius US or Sirius Canada, depending on subscription
jump to previous channel (flashback function)
set traffic/weather channel, one-button jump to it
That's a short list. Perhaps others here have suggestions?

Hello,
I'm willing to step up and create an application for Sirius streaming on the n800. I was looking for an app that did this anyway!
I'm going to work on this starting monday, should have something together then. Might as well make a desktop version while i'm at it.

Excellent! Do yourself a favor, and take a look at the Yahoo Sirius widget that Tanner J. wrote, as it is beloved by those who use it. From a feature standpoint, it's spot-on.

This would be seriously sweet! Thanks to everyone working on it and contributing. I would be willing to make a donation as well. I love Sirius and have used the app on my WM5/6 phone (Cingular 8125 and Cingular 8525) and it works great.
One potential problem would be the "catchit" phrase that Sirius uses. The app would need to pull that down to the Nokia.
Thanks!

Damned be all those people and so called "services" showering earth and its plants, animals and humans with radiation and electric waves, degenerating genotypes, polluting the transcendental space and making brains hurt with their satelites.
Ok, I'm just jealous that here in Europe there's none thing like Sirius Radio. Also, I find it a freaking coincidental miracle that the N800 hardware can pick up its frequency, but it seems to work. Well, just jealous.

i dont think N800 hardware picks up any satelite radio, and the app is fetching an internet stream of some sort via WiFi. which brings me to the question WHY? i dont have Sirius or XM but i figure you have a receiver of some sort when you subscribe to their services that is much better than N800 can provide... dont they practically give you the Hardware for Free just so you would sign up? and if it's a service that you sign up to just listen on-line than how is different from other internet stream radios?

THey do "kind of" give you the hardware for free. For the cheaper units.
To get the satellite radio you can walk around with costs you a LOT of money.
For ME... the talk shows are the BEST. (Music is okay.) I listen on my PC when in the house... to much bother to take the radio in from the Jeep. But it would be cool to have it at a wi-fi spot.

sirius on my n800 = make it even better.
I listen to my sirius anytime I am on my computer or in my car, if howard is boring I go to a music station. or internet radio. I was holding off on buying a portable sirius radio in hopes the n800 will play it.
n900 better have a satellite radio built into it!

I have also just successfully streamed live Sirius to my Nokia Tablet, this time using the Nokia N810. I plan on developing a working interface for my N810, which I'm sure will work with the N800 just the same.
For anybody else that feels like hacking, I did the following:
Download the repositories from http://gronmayer.com/it/
(Warning: Some repositories must be disabled in order for Application Manager to work correctly. I installed all, then slowly disabled each Repo in REVERSE ORDER until my Catalogues would correctly update)
Obtain root access using becomeroot
SSH into the device
apt-get install mplayer python2.5 python2.5-dev python-setuptools
( There may have been some more crucial requirements, these are just the ones I remembered :( )
easy_install BeautifulSoup
Then get the latest version of SiPie, either as a tar file or svn checkout:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=196723&package_id=232501&release_id=541816
or the following command on your desktop machine:
svn co https://sipie.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/sipie sipie
Regardless, you'll have to copy the extracted files to your Nokia. I used SFTP, but you could simply use an SD card.
DO NOT easy_install sipie.
Just execute sipie as a python script:
python sipie.py
It will go through the configuration, ask for a stream, and download the captcha file. Since I SSHd in, I had to quickly SFTP get the captcha image on my laptop, then enter it into the Nokia SSH.
Either way, upon entering the Captcha, the Nokia began to play some wonderful music from AltNation.
I'm very sorry for my brevity, I wrote everything above from memory. I am in a hurry but will be back later with a more detailed tutorial.

i too bought the n800 with the hopes it could stream sirius. as it was mentioned bfore there is an app called SiriusWM5 for pocket pc that works perfect. its really only a frontend to get past the authenication on the sirius site. its not a player, it actually just sends the stream to the built in WMV player. can ppc apps be ported over to linux? or atleast be used as a starting point? also, siriuswm5 is free.

That's essentially how Sipie works, it just gets you through all the authentification bs, then launches mplayer. The Windows version launches Windows Media Player.

Where do I find the stream address of the channel I want?
I followed the instructions from the link, blog, Mike_L posted above, but got to the point of needing a stream.
Also, how do you restart (launch) sipie agin?
Mike_L
04-16-2008, 01:09 PM
The stream is usually the name of the station you want to listen to. For example, thevault or octane, it is always lower case and if it is composed of two words there is normally, but not always, and underscore between the words.
Sorry about the omission.
Mike_L
04-16-2008, 01:10 PM
PS. you have to hit ctrl+c to exit sipie in order to restart it.
I'll update the blog post.

Thanks Mike L (and the other developers of the process) for this very useful feature!! I finally got it to work after having some initial problems with the install of BeautifulSoup (kept giving me space shortage error even with 90MB free on the device memory - I unpacked on pc and copied the files over manually).
To run it, I open xterm, then I have to become root (won't run if I don't - is this right?). Next I enter the command MyDocs/sipie/sipie.py
Then I get the prompt "Enter stream:", which I enter, and after 20-30 seconds, that channel is streaming. Good work!
Just wondering why I have to be root for it to run? It's a minor point but it would be nice to make it simpler to start (guess I'm wishing for a gui!)
Thanks again for a really great application!

I have the root problem too. I spent a couple of hours playing with the permissions but, I was never able to get around it.
The 20-30 second pause is the buffer building. You can try changing the value to speed it up. You can try changing the value in the cliPlayer.py script to try and speed it up. To low and it will start to skip.
Has anyone tried using the sirius firefox plugin with the moble firefox browser? I know that browser only works with a keyboard at the moment so you need an 810. All I have is an 800.

I believe the login info is stored in the config file. If you open xterm and do a "cd .sipie" (it's one of those hidden directories; /home/user/.sipie if you become root in xterm), you will find the config file, cookies.txt, and possibly playlist. Try deleting the config file and I believe you will be prompted for the login info. It may be that the login info is also stored in the cookies.txt file, I can't recall.

bg4:
Open Application Manager > Application Catalog > Maemo Extras and write “chinook diablo” in the box marked Distribution.
didnt help - actually had already done it
EDIT - RESOLVED - sirius working on N810/Diablo
As stated above - easy_install BeautifulSoup did not work - use wget and following link
http://crummy.com/software/BeutifulSoup/download/BeautifulSoup.py
Remember all of this takes place in xterm in directory MyDocs/sipie (some maybe .sipie?)
Now I needed getpass.py - google search revealed that maemo has the file at
https://garage.maemo.org/plugins/scmsvn/viewcvs.php/*checkout*/getpass.py?root=airx&rev=1
there is a string that has to be added (to the end of the above link) cause its not secure or something. I copied download link to notes/added string and copied/pasted it back to Xterm.
downloaded it to sipie directory and it is working
Now I can run python sipie.py and it asks for my username/pw and all the canada and captcha stuff.
Spoke too soon - seems my three day trial that I got two months ago finally expired. Back to using orb - which is actually better but I just wanted to prove that you can run python sipie.py on diablo.
I am awaiting the arrival of my N800 (I used to have a Nokia 770).
Is there a definitive walkthrough for this SIRIUS set-up that works?
Thank you to everyone!

I just recently installed Diablo, and really wanted Sirius back on my
N800 via sipe.
Here's what I did.
Make sure wget, becomeroot(for sudo gainroot), and mplayer are already installed on your device.
After getting root privileges on device, type at command line:
apt-get install mplayer python2.5 python2.5-dev python-setuptools wget
mplayer will update if needed.
answer 'Yes' to any questions asked here.
(notice the 3rd mention of python is not written python2.5, I recieved errors if I wrote python2.5-setuptools)
Next install BeautifulSoup:
wget http://www.crummy.com/software/BeautifulSoup/download/BeautifulSoup.py
(crummy.com/software/BeautifulSoup/download/BeautifulSoup.py)
Change to your home directory:
cd /home/user/MyDocs
Download sipie:
wget http://packratstudios.com/download/sipie.tar.gz
Untar by:
tar -xvzf sipie.tar.gz
Change to the sipie directory:
cd sipie
launch sipie:
type EITHER... python sipie.py OR... MyDocs/sipie/sipie.py ONE will work for you , getting to the login step.
God Bless You!!!
Now, can someone please test this? I can't do anything until mine arrives (maybe tomorrow, maybe Monday). :(
How is the streaming quality?

What happened to this posted message:
We should post the proper names of streams that correctly work:
hairnation, octane, altnation, faction, firstwave.
lithium and howard100 and howard101 are listed invalid streams :(
I just need to know if Howard 100 & Howard 101 works...?
How easy or hard is it to do this "hack"...?

I edited my original message because it had bad news(incorrect stream names) about streaming the howard channels, that you might not like.
Look in the stream name list for the correct howard stream name, it works I tried it.
The list came from the first post in this thread by m00s3computer, thanks.
So, it's possible to stream Howard Stern and there shouldn't be an issue?
Is it easy or hard to get this to work?
I just recently installed Diablo, and really wanted Sirius back on my
N800 via sipe.
Here's what I did.
Make sure wget, becomeroot(for sudo gainroot), and mplayer are already installed on your device.
After getting root privileges on device, type at command line:
apt-get install mplayer python2.5 python2.5-dev python-setuptools wget
mplayer will update if needed.
answer 'Yes' to any questions asked here.
(notice the 3rd mention of python is not written python2.5, I recieved errors if I wrote python2.5-setuptools)
Next install BeautifulSoup:
wget http://www.crummy.com/software/BeautifulSoup/download/BeautifulSoup.py
(crummy.com/software/BeautifulSoup/download/BeautifulSoup.py)
Change to your home directory:
cd /home/user/MyDocs
Download sipie:
wget http://packratstudios.com/download/sipie.tar.gz
Untar by:
tar -xvzf sipie.tar.gz
Change to the sipie directory:
cd sipie
launch sipie:
type EITHER... python sipie.py OR... MyDocs/sipie/sipie.py ONE will work for you , getting to the login step.
Where do you get:
wget, becomeroot (for sudo gainroot), and mplayer
And then, how do you get root privileges?

don't use becomeroot, use rootsh which can be install through the app manager.
mplayer can be installed through the app manager as well.
wget can be installed by
root
apt-get install wget
in xterm.
to become root in xterm you should just be able to type "root"
Or "sudo su -"
Now I am confused, what exactly should I be doing for this Sirius application?
Sorry to go on babbling and babbling, but I am trying so hard to get this to work.
Has anyone got this working yet?
Can someone (that got this working) please post a "How-To" with a step-by-step list of instructions for a ***** like me, please?
I don't know what to do once I open XTerm...
Where do I get PYMaemo from?
Someone - PLEASE?!?!?!?!
I would love to get this working. Someone please help me.

Follow post #64 of this thread or go to:
http://packratstudios.com/index.php/2008/04/13/how-to-listen-to-sirius-online-with-your-nokia-n800-n810-internet-tablet/
Thank you, but Maemo Extras won't "update" after I install it...?
In addition, the OpenSSH won't install, it says there is a problem. "APPLICATION PACKAGE NOT FOUND"... I also cannot install MPlayer???
And now, the whole device seems to be running slower... :-(
I have not been able to get sirius to work since I upgraded to diablo.
My problem seems to be in the installation of BeautifulSoup:
Nokia-N810-23-14:~# easy_install BeautifulSoup

Has anyone been able to install BeautifulSoup on Diablo?
I have it working...
Anyone know how I can get FOX News Channel playing?

Has anyone been able to install BeautifulSoup on Diablo?
check through post #64 of this thread, you may be using an older BeautifulSoup address.
I updated my browser, but now I get this error...

What's that? Please help.

Not Hijacking the thread I hope. When I try to install aps such as BeautifulSoup, Mplayer and Python my N810 gives me a message that reads "but is not going to be installed". I updated to the latest nokia DIABLO and wonder if this is the problem and if there are any work arounds. I have been to the PACKRAT site and it is very helpful. I can gain root access with SSH and I can see the MAEMO extras on my APPS.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Want to hear about Howards Wedding tomarrow.
NM
Can someone please help us get this to work? Does anyone have this working anymore? Please confirm/deny.

Yes, it still works. I'm running Diablo with an N800 and sipie.py with beautifulsoup is still working find.
