This list is no longer maintained. The list on the meego wiki is the one to follow. You can add your requests there yourselves too.

http://wiki.meego.com/Porting_list_from_maemo

Compiling a list of community apps that we would like to see ported/recompiled to the new N9.

I intend to port Tweed Suit (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=73490) as soon as possible.

The apps I use the most that I would like for Harmattan are
QSpot (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=55589) and MeBook (http://maemo.org/packages/view/mebook/). The latter being an ebook reader can be replaced with other apps though. But that one's my favorite.

So developers, are you planning on porting your applications, and users, which apps would you really like ported?

Developers, if your app is in the list, please inform us of your plans.

I understand It's debian based and UI is QtQuick. 99% sure on deb, 100% sure on Qt.

Hah, I had that first on my list but deleted it, because it goes without saying!

While waiting for a Harmattan announcement I thought it might be a good idea to start looking at what needs to be ported to the new device(s).

EDIT: It it's somehow unclear, I'm referring to the operating system on the mythical N9/N950 devices, possibly being announced 21th of June 2011

List of requests so far:
Rootsh
QSpot
MeBook
Xournal
Conboy
Greader
Evince
Blessn900 or its ovi store counterpart
Cutetube
Frontview
Presence VNC
Kmplayer

Radiotimetogo

I do intend to port over QSpot to the new (Harmattan) platform in case no major technical problem stands in the way. I have experienced several problems in the porting efforts to MeeGo Community Edition.

HiveMind, if possible
Zim
Vim, it goes without saying
An rss reader like FeedingIt

I'll be looking at the apps I've already got in Extras:

Attitude (QML version for Symbian & Maemo is nearly ready, and much faster)
Hermes (probably keep the Python engine and use QML/PySide for the frontend, and a new Qt Mobility contacts wrapper)
Vim (since it's mentioned above ;-))

In terms of requests, the big one is OpenSSH.

Hah, I had that first on my list but deleted it, because it goes without saying!

Glad you apreciate the joke ;)

And then for a longer answer: I don't actually know yet what I would like to have ported. It depends on a couple of things:

1. What is already preinstalled. For example if there is a good Facebook app then there is no need for port of Kasvopus.
2. How customisable (apparently not at all :() Harmattan is. On Fremantle I like for example cpumem-applet and Quicklaunch and would like to have something similar on Harmattan if possible.
3. Hardware specific things. On N900 I like to emulate Amiga and C64 with UAE4All and Vice because the games are actually playable with physical keyboard and Gamegripper. If there is just touchscreen on N9/N950/Ion/nWhatever then those emulators become almost useless.

Anyway, here is a couple of suggestions that should be useful and good programs in any case:
ansela
battery-eye
Dropbox client
Flashlight
frontview900
Gonvert
Gweled
maeFat
OpenSSH
QSpot
Zouba

anapospastos

Everything is customizeable if you're persistent enough. I trust this community will customize the hell out of Harmattan ;)

Well you can actually use a controller for that, but yeah I agree. The physical keyboard is definitely required for full portable emulation. Gamegripper ftw!

I'm planning to port cuteTube to both Meego CE and Harmattan. :)

Requests:

Filebox

FapMan (May not be totally necessary if the Harmattan AppMan runs faster than a sedated slug)

gPodder

Cassio
06-20-2011, 06:13 AM
easydebian
ScummVM (i think it will be the easiest emulator to play with without a keyboard/controller)
Free Heroes 2
vnc\rdesktop
jdownloader
bluemaemo (would be perfect if there was wifi support too)

If it's Nokias flagship device, then just: wifi injection drivers.

The ones I use the most are

Gpodder
grr
Sociality
instinctiv
Tickstill
ConnectNow
Scout
Gom
Petrovich

Not sure which of those are worth considering, for example, I'm sure that ConnectNow is a no-go because people have said there are no widgets on the screen of this new device.

Hope they're mistaken - I love my FB, weather, calendarHome and Conversations widgets.

gPodder for sure. Its one of the best (if not the best) pod catchers on a mobile device.

Another app or rather the base functionality of the current N900/maemo is the ability to add IM protocols / plug-ins to the device. This allows me to be online all the time enabling me to communicate with my friends and colleagues in real-time…

This is something I don’t want to lose…. It’s one of the better n900 capabilities that should IMHO defo be apart of the new N9 harmatten device.

Here are my suggestions, hopefully some agree/nobody finds them useless: :p

-Transmission, or another lightweight torrent program
-Conky
-Open Office equivalent
-SixAxis
-Backup Menu

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Twas the night before Nokia’s Big Day, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Elop soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of N9’s and N950 danced in their heads.
arrrhhh.... God dam’ it where are the leaks that Nokia are infamous for ;)

As far as I can currently tell, Conboy won't be portable in it's current form. Depending on the new device (Do I have it? Do I want to use it?) I will consider writing a Qt/QML version from scratch.

But no promises yet :)

"Tuner" is a must have for me. I use it along with the CTRL+Shift+P screenshot to take photos of the incredible high notes I hit with trumpets I want to sell (gotta' pay the bills somehow!).
For example: How about a G flat over double high C with a Bach Strad 72*/43LP and a Zottola 64C?

I have thought what features are missing from N9 that i use in my N900 and and all i got is Spotify,Mapsi and FMTX but i heard that there is propaply going to be spotify client in ovi store and fmtx is blur right now, maybe device has that on chip but doesnt have drivers. so only Mapsi is must for me :)

Things I use most, so top of my list would be:

Katana (or a Bible reader)
Maecount (I've already spoken to the dev!)
Stoppish (or a timer of some sort)
Xournal
A handful of simple games (I use colorflood, Qthello, blocks)
Some sort of document reader that could handle standard .doc formats would be good.
MyPaint is awesome - though I'm not artist enough to make the most of it.
Anyone for MeeSheep?

Those would be my top pics. I'm sure people will think up other things. There's a project already looking at clever things with NFC and settings (I'd find the link but I'm already late for work!)

This is just a suggestion. But imo there should not be any standalone apps for social networking. I think developers of social network apps should focus on integrating functionality into already existing Nokia apps i.e integrating facebook into the feeds view.

I've already started prototyping deep facebook and twitter integration into the Nokia feeds and contacts app. The open nature of Meego drastically reduces the need for standalone apps. I think it would be wise for all devs to adopt this mindset.

Seriously, though, I'm hoping that phone comes with decent bluetooth mouse/keyboard support right out of the box, but if that's not the case (), I'd say those are top priorities, especially for people who use the device as a pocket computer.

leafpad (nice, easy and fast text editor)

wizard mounter ( let you mont hard drives from any windows pc on the lan on the n900)
presence vnc ( or any similar program, there are a few available)
webos games (to play webos games)
mussorgsky (edit mp3 metadata, with 64gb there will probably be need for this to arrange the music library properly, nokia usually do a bad job or none for the metadata edit)
someplayer (for music the best actually on n900, in any case till theres more testin on the n9 we wont know the need for a 3rd party program, we dont even know if the music player has equalizer or not yet!)

I haven't left the scene, but I haven't really had the time to work on Fuelpad for many months now. Since Fuelpad is a gtk+ app, porting will require a lot of work. I'd like to port it, but I won't promise anything.

I would like to see youku, which is already available in appstore

youku, a china leading video sharing site

1. Youku is only accessible from within mainland China, so maybe you can ask some Chinese developers to get coding (or get to work yourself ;) ).

2. This thread is about existing community applications that users would like to see on forthcoming devices. :p

Has there been any successful ports of any current N900 apps to the N9 yet?

And are community forums or websites where we can be updated with this sort of information, such as what is being ported, by who and what stage is it at? etc.

If there isn't something like that, maybe create a new section on these forums specifically for N900 app ports to Meego 1.2 Harmattan?

Just flicking through the repos. In the event that I get an N9, which is unlikely seeing as it's probably not going to be available in the UK, the following would be very useful and I don't think mentioned yet...

compression s/w (tar-gnu, unzip, lzma etc.)
mplayer (explicitly, not just front-ends)
maepad (both versions)
Dataplan monitor
rtmpdump
libwww-perl (not an app per-se but needs re-packaging probably)
camera extensions (FCamera & BlessN900) + drivers
Ansel-A digital dark room (not sure if in "free" section of repos)
fMMS (or is MMS pre-installed?)
CUPS (or is a printing mechanism pre-installed)
gloarchive
swappolube (if necessay with the larger RAM?)

While not strictly maemo community software, nitdroid.

Probably my most frequently used app is the mafw-lastfm (last.fm scrobbler), I'd love to have it (or any other scrobbler) on N9 as well.

Porting might understandably be a bit tricky though, since it's explicitly a "maemo media application framework" app...

Some - Attitude for one (just like with the N900, it was the first community app tested and discussed - I'm aiming for it to be a tradition).

See this thread: http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=3634

And are community forums or websites where we can be updated with this sort of information, such as what is being ported, by who and what stage is it at? etc.

It's not relevant to this forum is it? Hopefully we'll start seeing them on apps.meego.com once we've got devices and worked out how the infrastructure will work.

As I only maintain one app, Panucci, I'm willing to help port stuff over to python/qml if anyone needs help. I saw i.e epage maintains a whole bunch of apps and there might be others too. Still some time to september 23 though but as they say, time flies. :)

Not a competition. I'd appreciate if new additions are kept separate from those already on the list. But it might still be a good idea to mention some of the apps already there that you like because it makes the developer happy, and thus more interested in working on the app :)

But you might just as well put a (done) or something to your list for those already done. Good list btw, as I said I'm willing to help if there are apps that people want that are not ready when the N9 ships.

Edit: Also I think that both GTK and Qt will work on Harmattan even if QML is the preferred toolkit to use. So most stuff should be able to at least run even if it doesn't look as cool as with QML.

"MobileHotspot" is listed as preinstalled on N9. Seems to be Joikuspot based.

I just checked out a friends device (got it at the Meego network meeting yesterday), there is the joikuspot_bouncer kernel module, netfilter doesn't seem to be in the default kernel (again, why oh why... doing the netfilter stuff in kernel is so much more efficient than doing it "Joiku style" that it's not even funny).

But I guess titan will be building a power-users kernel for Harmattan as well (and meanwhile I can build my -hotspot kernel like I did in the past with N900).

Still just speculation though, I haven't actually tested flashing a kernel on my friends device... (need to wait till I get my own).

Even the Nokia Maps on the N900 seems better than Google and with the new one, I think it'll blow Google Maps out of the water. To me, you just can't beat offline maps and I find the interface to be much better too. JMHO though.

I'll throw in a vote for Hermes (think it's being done as we speak), video call app as suggested above (unless Skype is packaged in with it), and some kind of remote control as well like posted above (WMC, VLC, etc.)

Hoping to finally get around to learning C++ and Python so I can make an app or two myself for the N9.

It's always good to have multiple choices. Nokia/Ovi maps is nice, and I use it when travelling abroad, but it's unusable in some countries like mine, Serbia. Basically the map is empty, only the international highways/roads are shown and the borders of towns. You zoom in to a town and it's empty.
If I start using the N950 as my main phone (I need skype and gtalk), and there is nothing except the built in maps, I'll try to do something with Marbles.

(I'm the author of gTranslate) Porting gTranslate will be kinda useless. You may have heard that Google is closing their free translation api and in the future you will have to pay for it. :( The api will be closed on 1st of December so there are some time left. After that the only option I found is to use free Bing translation api (ew!). Currently it's already used Harmattan application Translate Mee (not open source I think...). I might code a new translation application for Harmattan which will be using multiple different sources (Google Translate, Microsoft/Bing translator and dictionaries for single words). Someone else is going make (or have made) similar application(s) so I'm not sure will I make one myself.

cuteTube is almost ready to go. I'm hoping to have it in the store next week. Development was on hold due to a bug which caused a segfault when minimising whilst a video was playing. Seems to have been fixed in the recent firmware update. I used the time get MusiKloud finished. :)

Just so you know....
This thread is about porting existing apps, there's another for general app suggestions.
Coincidentally there is a WiFi analyser for Maemo5, so yes, it'd be a good idea to port this.
Actually IIRC it may not even be GUI-based, so porting as such won't be necessary.

Maybe you could make a version for "advanced users" with root access available in apps.formeego.org: http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=4051 ?

This way the people who accidentally bought N9 instead of iPhone could get their Filebox from Ovi and could not mess their phone by moving anything crucial and the others could get a version from community repo.

Hmm, that seems slightly condescending. I think there should only be one version, but maybe it shouldn't be that easy to get into root mode - e.g. you have to type in a password or something.

What about enabling root access via the config file? No need for a password, just open /home/user/.config/cepiperez/filebox.conf and set enableRootAccess=false to enableRootAccess=true (example). There's no way this can be performed without prior knowledge.

PCSX ReARMed (http://notaz.gp2x.de/pcsx_rearmed.php) would be quite nice too. Would be really nice if I could play Chrono Cross on the phone :)

gpfce (http://notaz.gp2x.de/gpfce.php) is quite fast NES emulator which also can play .nsf sound files.

Is this a wish list for N9 apps to the great wishing star in the sky? Is anybody listening? There doesn't seem to be any interest in porting apps to N9. This site Apps for Meego has just 1 app after weeks in operation. How sad! How pathetic! Ovi store is flooded with useless RSS feed apps but the useful utilities have not increased from day 1.

http://apps.formeego.com/basecategories/n9/pr1.0/harmattan/

jalyst
10-16-2011, 10:58 PM
Umm, follow the apps for meego thread at the meego forum.
The site is not ready yet, it's still in a testing phase...

The N9's not even out in most of the countries it's destined for.
And the countries it's out in, have only received small batches initially, w/larger ones on-the-way.
And those countries have had it from 0-3wks, tops...
With all that in mind, why would you think apps should be exploding on the scene?

The Ovi store has been growing with useful apps every day I've followed it.
How long have you been watching, I have for 2mth now, & it's increased at a better rate than the N900.
And what about the other sources, have you checked those too.

And it's never going to have a huge repository of commercial apps anyway.
In case you haven't been following, everything Nokia's done over the past 8-mths will ensure that.

Besides, this thread's about non-commercial apps. You have every right to complain...
But not to devs that that've made apps available in their own time, & free of charge.
The complaining should be directed to Nokia in the Nokia forums, or at the Ovi Store etc.
Or various other commercial devs who haven't yet targeted Harmattan for whatever reason.

SamGan
10-17-2011, 12:15 AM
jalyst, I understand there's not going to be a huge repository of apps, commercial or not but the trend now is discouraging. I've been following Ovi store since N9 started shipping and I don't see useful apps coming every day. It may have been the case for the past 2 months but not now. There are lots of useless RSS feed apps but useful utilities seem to be frozen.

I'm talking about apps like wi-fi analyzer, wi-fi file transfer, bar code reader, QR code reader, gps parking, lyric search, Shazam, ebook readers (yes, I know there is a beta one), MS Office editor, etc which are staples in any platform.

I don't make a distinction between commercial or non-commercial apps. If the developers here want to go commercial it's up to them. Have you noticed that most of the games in My-Meego.com which were once free have gone commercial?

There's really no need to scour around the net looking for sources of N9 apps. Any new apps will be reported in My-Meego.com. Any other source you can find are just repeats. Well, My-Meego.com reports a 1 or 2 new apps every few days. Pretty discouraging. You can say N9 has only started shipping but this is wishful justification. Nokia has already given developers a head start months ago. So why are the apps still coming at a trickle?

I'm not ranting against Meego developers here, I'm only expressing my disappointment. Yes, Elop has done all he could to contain N9's mass market appeal but I didn't expect the Meego/Maemo community to just cave in and surrender. Look at N900, there are far more useful apps than N9 now and they were developed by enthusiasts and given free because there was no commercial potential anyway. But now we have the N9 with some commercial potential but the Meego/Maemo community have given Elop an easy victory.

jalyst
10-17-2011, 12:39 AM
Sorry, but I just don't see it the same way at all...
In 6mth you'll be looking at a commercial/FOSS ecosystem that's more successful than the N900 was at the same point.
Despite having much of it's oxygen stolen by the WP strategy, & a lingering Symbian.
Based on everything we know, common sense favours that IMO.
Of course nothing like it could've/should've been, but better than we were with the N900.
Anyway this is getting too off-topic for this thread...
We have the water-cooler thread for such debates:

I think there will be lots more things in the store by the end of the year. Nokia has some stuff going on right now that isn't allowed to be discussed publicly, so just trust me when I say that anyone that got the email is busy with their devkits.
If you're wondering what is taking so long, please consider that stuff like this (http://doc.qt.nokia.com/latest/model-view-programming.html) is required reading in my spare time, QML is a new language we all have to learn, and just because it has a simple syntax doesn't mean it's easy to port an app to run on the n9.

We could do with a scientific calculator. The bundled calculator doesn't have sqrt or brackets. It's too basic. I know there is an AlmostTI emulation but it's too complex to use with tiny keys that are very hard to press accurately.

Another app urgently needed is a wi-fi file transfer. Using bluetooth for file by file transfer is inconvenient and not all PCs have bluetooth.

A Parking app using GPS to mark and locate your car would be very useful. In metropolitan centers one can hardly park close to one's destination.

A wi-fi analyzer which can detect and display signal strength, channels and lock status would be another useful app to have.

These are staples in any platform and I hope they can be filled soon before developers start on more esoteric apps. I hope someone's listening.

There is an option in Harmattan, which does basically the (disable background connections, disconnects unused connections), but it also prevents mail/facebook/weather sync in the background, ie. those sync aren't even allowed to start a new connection.

These are not geek apps but general apps for ordinary people and found on ios, android, Symbian, WP7 and Bada. I'm not sure what your definition of geek is but it sure doesn't take any extraordinary knowledge to use a parking app or wi-fi transfer app.

i was hoping that there exist a way to automatically disable to 'allow background connections' option when I am on mobile data network, however that is not going to be implemented officially by Nokia. Would have to look for workarounds :/

I agree parking application would be nice.

We could also use wifihotspot like on N900 for all of us who cannot use joikuspot.
The problem with the wifihotspot from the N900 is it needs some kernel option that is not in the standard meego kernel so we need a custom kernel as well perhaps. iptables would be nice as well.

I was just looking for a scientific calculator the other day myself. I also found the built in calculator too limiting.

One app I liked to use now and then on the N900 was a call recorder applet. Something that recorded calls on the N9 would be nice.

I also liked the pedometer applet on the N900, I wonder if it is possible to do some kind of pedometer on the N9.

Do you know how that's going??
there was a bunch of fremantle stuff being ported to GTK upstream.
And then I think it was to be ported to Qt?
A co. was specially contracted for it IIRC.
Sorry, this is somewhat off-topic.

Final bump, anyone know? Thanks.

Is there any Yahoo plugin available in the Accounts section in the N9??

If not then is Pidgin being considered to be ported to Yahoo?? As it seems to be the only fully-featured yahoo messenger for linux.

Hope someone will get this ported to the N9 soon. :)

I started porting "Subtitles support" (because it looks like support for external subtitles will not be included again) and for sure "Flashlight".
