mainly wanted to see if you can put in an username and password. put in something random and let it fail, if it does fail thats fine. had issues with it working on the n900.

Went fine, except it said that the username "bbqwtf" and the password "orly" didnt match anything they had any record of.

:)

edit: Video call through skype i havent tried. Might try to get that tested tomorrow for you if you want?

Ebay guy sold 2 phones already and has upped his price £25 to £595! Meanwhile continental shops are £140 cheaper if you wait a week, meaning folks are paying up a lot for only a few days' exclusive.

So I guess they are still working on it.

You can also see an explanation for why if you go to html5test.com on your N9 it will now show a lower score of 255 instead of the original 283 because the testing rules got changed.

(Firefox 9.0a1 on N9 apparently scores 314+9).

Mulvad
The reason is that on html5test.com they have decided to not give points in the "User Interaction" category under "HTML Editiing" as it doesn't work in most mobile browsers. It does work in the N9 browser though and I have tried to reach them to understand how the score can be corrected. If anybody knows how to get in touch with them, I would love to hear about it.

Wikipedia lists HSPA+ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolved_HSPA) as a 3.5G technology. LTE-Advanced and WiMax are the only 4G technologies they list.

That's not the case. HSPA+ is officially referred to as 4G by the ITU. Therefore it is highly unlikely to support HSPA+ if it is referred to as 3.5G because they would have been able to put 4G if it did.

QtWebKit 2.2.0 is released
http://labs.qt.nokia.com/2011/09/29/qtwebkit-2-2-0-is-released/
Qt SDK update and the Nokia N9 <--- :)
http://blog.qt.nokia.com/2011/09/29/qt-sdk-update-and-the-nokia-n9/
To align with the Nokia N9 release, an online update for Qt SDK 1.1.3 was made available today.

It introduces the following improvements:
• Updated Harmattan target, Beta2, to correspond to the most recent public firmware release of Nokia N950 Developer Device. This version of the target is still considered experimental, but it can be used for developing apps for Nokia N9.
• Qt Creator 2.3.1, with support for app booster for N9 software and fixes for Symbian on-device debugging (CODA).
• Fix to ensure that Qt Quick components work in the Simulator for software targeting the Nokia N9 smartphone and Symbian phones.
• Symbian Complementary package improvements with an updated qmlviewer.sis for Qt 4.7.4 and NFC support in the QtMobility 1.2 sis file.

Developers can obtain this update by running the Update tool of the Qt SDK.
Qt Creator 2.3.1 released
http://labs.qt.nokia.com/2011/09/29/qt-creator-2-3-1-released/

@Marxian
Noticed this in the comments for the QtWebKit 2.2.0 post:

@Manolin: There may not be a 2.3 release, since we would most likely bump it to 3.0 for the new Qt major.
New QtWebKit features (for Qt5) are taking shape on WebKit trunk right now...
Just a few hours ago we were discussing how to expose download functionality in the new QML web view API’s.

Improvements to the stock browser WRT d'load functionality not far away?
Not sure what the roadmap/timeline is for delivery of Qt5/QtWebKit3...

Hm compared to N8 and SGS2 multitasking is of course a lot better and intuitive. faster as well. other than that I have to see for a few days how the device handles during regular use, really.

Keyboard is better than the N8s, but still shares a problem with the special characters, mostly exclamation mark and question mark which are not on the qwerty page of the keyboard, but under specialized characters. not a huge deal, but id prefer a swiftkey x like approach with longpress to activate alternate characters like those.

As for videocalling i havent found that yet, at all.

For screenshots i downloaden an app from ovi store called "screenshot", simply enough. basically you launch the app, swipe it back, navigate to where you want your screenshot, then cover the proximity sensor of the device to take the picture,

mass storage I havent tried yet, and the device comes with track and protect, though i havent activated it yet.

Email... i havent done much of. adding multiple recipients is extremely easy from your contact book, you basically select whatever number of people you want when choosing recipients, and theyre all added at once.

Attatchments is insanely easy as well, very nice email client indeed.

Bluetooth settings:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-RBz4IyA2g5E/Ton03rg958I/AAAAAAAAAwM/FZ-GOyfzHNQ/s512/2011-10-03_07-45-23.png

Dont have a BT keyboard. Ive got an N900 though, maybe that would work?

Coolest thing? Dunno, probably the multitasking. Just swiping **** away is pretty nice. Still getting used to the device, and havent really gotten a chance to see how it works seeing as how its so new. After a few days of general use Im sure Ill notice things that shine abit more than right now.

I was browsing the manual -oh, the anticipation-, and I think it said that when you put your finger over the shift-key it shows the specialized characters; then without lifting your finger off the screen move it to the special character you want to type. 10-03-2011, 07:04 PM
Just got an e-mail from the Nokia Brasil online store saying that pre-sales will begin in the end of october and direct sales will begin in november.

I know that jotoco went to at least two different physical Nokia stores here in Brazil and was informed that the N9 will arrive next week and only people with unoficial pre-orders will get it due to limited availability, but a representative from Nokia Customer Care sent me an e-mail last week saying that the N9 will be widely available and publicized in Brazil. She even sent me a list of more than 10 retailers that should get it once it's available.

Let's hope that the managers of the Nokia stores jotoco went to were only trying to push pre-orders by fueling these limited availability stories.

Actually if you re-read my posts you will note this is true for the São Paulo store, on the Rio de Janeiro Store they said it would be available early november, not october. Maybe there was a change in plans during the time frame (last sunday and the sunday before it).

But both Stores cited limited availability and only 1 run. As I said, it can be to drive more pre-orders (which will have a nice bonus acording to the RJ Store, but it is NOT a bluetooth phone, they didn't say what specifically)

Sigh feel so left out... I want one too :(
I can't seem to find a good way get my hands on one in Ontario, Canada. Expansys still has not listed a price or date and frankly I am kinda scared what kind of price they are going to put up, Ebay scares me, and I don't know of any unauthorized retailer I can drive to.

Word for word that's how I feel. Except if I have to fly somewhere to get one, I will. Argh.

I have heard rumours of gray market importers in Mississauga for other flagship phones - so it's possible it could happen with the N9, but doesn't feel likely given what an incredibly limited amount of information Nokia has yet put out about this device, and it's no good popping down to Best Buy USA cos I somehow doubt they'll be stocking them there (unlike the N900, which they did).

My girlfriend went to the Rio de Janeiro store today and they gave her info that's in contradiction with the info they gave you.

I'll call them tomorrow, ask to talk to the manager and see what he tells me...

By the way, these were the retailers mentioned in the official response i got from Nokia Customer Care last week:

- Loja Nokia www.lojaonlinenokia.com.br
- Submarino www.submarino.com.br
- Americanas.com www.americanas.com.br
- Shoptime www.shoptime.com
- Casas Bahia www.casasbahia.com.br
- FNAC www.fnac.com.br
- Fast Shop www.fastshop.com.br
- Pernambucanas
- Ponto Frio www.pontofrio.com
- Wal-Mart www.walmart.com.br
- Magazine Luiza www.magazineluiza.com.br
- Rack&Rai (São Paulo)
- Comesp (São Paulo) www.comesp.com.br
- Autocell (São Paulo Capital) www.autocell.com.br
- Goorila (São Paulo) www.goorila.com.br
- Casa&Video (Rio de Janeiro) www.casaevideo.com.br
- Mercadomóveis (Paraná) www.lojasmm.com
- Becker (Rio Grande do Sul) www.elojasbecker.com.br

For those of you not familiar with Brazil some of these retailers are huge and I don't think that they'd get any N9's at all if the limited availability rumors were true.

I'm quite sure I'd be able to buy multiple N9's as soon as they're available here in Brazil.

Problems are:
1. It's going to be the most the most expensive N9 in the world.
2. Shipping costs to the US will be high and you'll probably going to have to pay some kind of import tax.
3. You won't get support from Nokia USA and Nokia Brasil won't ship it back to the US after a repair.
4. It seems that the first batch of N9's is not going to be available before the end of october (for those who somehow manage to unofficially pre-preorder their N9's now).
5. The first batch will only have the black 16 Gb N9, apparently.

Here in Aus, HSDPA will provide a max theoretical download speed of 7.2Mbps
Phones like the SGS2, with HSDPA+ will support a theoretical max of 21Mbps.

Both run on Telstra's "NextG" Frequency @850mhz, however makes no real difference as Telstra throttle their network to give a real download speed between 500Kbps and around 3Mbps.
Phones like the SGS2, here in Australia will never really get to utilise their theoretical maximum speeds, as the Telco's will use bandwidth throttling to maintain network redundancy (and thus save money on investing in infrastructure upgrade works)

Whilst it seems like our friends across the water like to market HSDPA+ as "4G", do the Telco's there actually support this with real maximum speeds on the Frequencies they run on?
If not, HSDPA+ may not be of much use after all.

Some good points, thanks for sharing!!
I wonder if any of the other major networks are any different, probably not.
Just a correction, N9 HSDPA's max theoretical is 14Mbps.
And for SGSII, I think you mean HSPA+ (AFAIK there's no such thing as HSDPA+)

by the way, I got an email reply from Elop:

"Hello there,

We definitely intend to support our customers so that you can safely enjoy an N9.

And regarding WP, we have a great deal of flexibility in the changes that we can make; however, we believe a great deal of the success of the broader WP ecosystem will be in the consistency of both the end user and developer experience. Thus, we will be very thoughtful about the nature and degree of changes that we make.

Regards,

Stephen"

As bland as I expected, really.

Totally skirted around your question/s & our concerns about the N9.
Admittedly there's a host of questions that need to be asked, that weren't.
Personally think it's best left that way, unless we put them to some other senior person/s.

Since Best Buy tracks all shipments online live, you could just go to bestbuy.com and search for Nokia N9. I already did it... they don't even CARRY it, nevermind stock it. heh I've bought a LOT from Best Buy online and in the stores. (One time, online ON THE WAY to the store using my Galaxy Tab to buy a new laptop before I even arrived at the store. BOOM... paid and done.) Inventory is tracked wonderfully on their site.

All that said, if they don't even list it, they won't have it at all anywhere.

Brazil is shafted by the Brazilians...

We have some ridiculously high import taxes, service taxes and industrialized products taxes. On top of that, we have the greediest capitalists and the stupidest consumers in the world.

Final result: we always pay exorbitant prices for everything industrialized, even for things that are manufactured in Brazil, like cars, digital cameras and... iPhone 4's, just to give a few examples.

EDIT: By the way, Nokia is probably the top brand in Brazil when it comes to cell phones, even though Apple and Samsung (with the SGS2) have been gaining lots of market share recently.

That page has been useless since the beginning.
MNB's been keeping a "rough" tally....

Unity games announced they will be bringing their games to the N9
http://thenokiablog.com/2011/09/29/nokia-n9-unity-3d-games/
Check out the video second game they incorporated numpty physics like drawing into the game, pretty cool if you ask me.

http://nokiagadgets.com/2011/09/28/unity-technologies-brings-wave-of-union-games-to-n9/
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44705237

But are we really talking games of the same calibre as Infinity Blade (http://www.epicgames.com/infinityblade/) for e.g?*
A quick scan here (http://unity3d.com) would suggest no, but man I'd love to be wrong.

N9's got the hardware to run games of this beauty, it just needs the right dev houses.
IB runs beautifully on my iTouch 4G, which is slightly weaker than the iP4 IIRC.

*it came out about this time last yr IIRC, but has had constant updates since.

Who makes the suction cup joystick for the iphone and can we get it for the N9?

Nice idea.

It's even funnier how a marketing exec/community "hero" is in the US and is unwilling to ask anybody that might have some say or ability to do a damn thing; all while asking people to support his endeavors and grant him validity to his position via this community or through their efforts.

Nokia Australia is no longer listing the phone as available soon and the full product support page is now online.
Appears as though release is iminent then!

First shipment of Nokia N9 for Australia has arrived and is going through customs right now.
I don't think shops will be able to get them in this week. But at least it's in Oz. =D

You will be surprised how quick product distribution logistics can work.
Going through customs on a Tuesday can still mean reaching stores on Thursday - but that depends on the logistics/distribution system that Nokia uses with their retailers.

I tend to agree. My guess is possibly Friday, more likely Monday.

As far as I know its just AV out through the jack plug, and ofc the usb cable into a TV, much like any memory stick, which some TVs can play. Which would be whatever quality the video file is in.

Also; DLNA support through an app, its not finished yet tho.

in the past, I used the same way for calendar items and contacts.. In preparation for my N9, I changed everything to my online hotmail account.. This is way better then built-in agenda of outlook.. For pc and phone, you can set it up like an MfE account. You always have all your contacts (just login on your online account on every computer to see calendar and contacts), it can be synced as you wish, so every pc/phone has automaticly the same info..

Yes, I know about that possibility. But I was talking about my company's calendar. If I would sync that to Gmail or somewhere else, I would most likely get kicked out of company due security policy violation...

MfE is an option, but it has internal costs in our company (=hard to get approved nowadays). Plus I only need to sync calendar, I don't want to pollute my own phone with work mails. :)

Just ordered black 64GB one from highdefinition.ch. It says "ab externem Lager bereit" which on their site translate to "external warehouse ready". I am not sure exactly what that means. I am hoping it means they are going to ship it to me soon. They ship all over the world.

Cost is CHF 756 with shipping to Hungary, that is $820/€622, which pretax is quite a lot. I assume I will get slammed with customs and VAT when the postman comes....

Yep, exactly: it means it is ready to be shipped from an external warehouse.
I just checked the price on the site: 659CHF (shipping excluded) is correct for the 64GB version. And the price is with tax included. Now whether you'll have to pay taxes in Hungary, it depends about the customs in your country, but I would say that if you have to pay taxes in your country, you can ask the Swiss taxes to be paid back to you...

Will order the 64 GB device from digicom.ch tomorrow at CHF 649(+ 2-4% if payment is with credit-card), but let it send to the address of a friend in Switzerland, because they don't ship out of country, but however more important is that so I will pay only 8% VAT, while it is 21% in Italy. This also saves me the shipping costs and customs. Then I'll see how I can make it pick up someone from there. According to today's telephone information they have not received the equipment till now.

guffaw you dont. its unlocked from telenor even if they say its locked. just put in your microsim from another carrier and it works.

slai
10-04-2011, 08:11 AM
It will request a key, but its just not true at all. If you try, youll notice theres a "w" in the code, which cannot be entered at all.

Me and the other guy buying the N9 and the manager at the store stood there for an hour working on this before I just went "okay, lets try popping in my microsim from netcom and see what up". And it worked flawlessly.

Could be an "early devices" thing where some fresh models arent locked even if theyre supposed to be, then the lock comes into place later on in subsequent deliveries, that happens a LOT in the business, as Im sure you know :) .

If you enter the land to which it is to be sent, then it automatically pulls the 8% from Swiss value added tax, but the delivery to Italy for example costs about the same amount again. According to information, customs duties and value-added tax will be levied in any case if the goods are shipped by airmail. If the delivery takes place on land, however, you can be lucky that the package is not controlled, otherwise the customs duties and value added tax will be levied.

I'd also like to have local Outlook sync. MfE is enabled for us, but the problem is that our Exchange server enforces PIN-lock of the device after 15 minutes... I hate this... imagine: You swipe your lock screen away and then still have to enter a code... that's totally breaking the flow...

I can understand this security measure when syncing mails, but I also only want to do Calendar entries and for this entering a lock code every 15 minutes is something I don't want...

with regards to your wifi issue:

try changing it to use different ranges instead of just G or N, do you have a ps3 on the same wifi? few friends found they can't connect to their wifi on certain devices when their ps3 is powered on. i can't remember what it was exactly but i do remember it was something to do with the channel used and they switched to using a,b,g instead of just 1.

i had an issue with some devices before and it was my router settings. i changed them and picked a channel that was a few out from the common ones used and it worked fine after that. friends devices didn't have any trouble connecting to my wifi with my ps3 connected either,
probably not going to be the same issue exactly but it's most likely your settings. hope that helps in any way.

as for the sync with outlook through usb, i'd like that also. i can't use mfe for my work email/calendar for security reasons, and i won't be able to ever, but i would like to sync my calendars.

Today i found out there is a shopping mall called Seacon square in Srinakarindra Road in BKK that will have 3 shops selling the device in there hundreds and all models, they are available from the 15th October.

So if your prepared to fly to Thailand you will for sure get it, the price IS the lowest i think in the world and you can check this out with Nokia in BKK, all it will take is a phone call and the rest is up to you guys.

I might just join you and go there myself to get one ;).

The out of the box experience of N900 was the greatest to date for Flickr users. Select multiple pictures and batch upload to Flickr.
Surprisingly the camera phone of the past year N8 missed the good old Symbian "share online" had to do it with unpractical and insecure third party software. Today one still has to use pixelpipe

I am not sure if it covers Ireland but if you're interested in joining voda let me know and i'll check.

if ya can beat the plan i have i may join.

€75 a month (incl VAT), unlimited calls and txt's to any irish number mobile or landline. 5gb data. it txt and call alot :)

I still consider that the 30-day rollin' 10£ unlimited data + 100 minutes is a steal if you don't talk too much.. I'll keep that and pay the n9 upfront.

Edit: and OT but flashing the n900 is really easy...

i was on a lower package with 500min and 500 any network txt, unlimited calls and txts to same network. i was running up a bill of 150 average a month. i txt and call ALOT,

Edit:
thats why the N9 appeals to me with it's good battery, good reception and good vkb, the iphone vkb is good and from what everyone has said the n9 is just as good but excels in it's phone abilities. it has to be a phone for me then an internet portal.

from what i recall there is no video calling on skype for the N9 yet. probably a similar case to when the N900 first came out. there's videos floating about and reviews of the photo sharing, from what i've seen it's as awesome as the n900 for that. in work now and lazy so can't paste any links.

from everything i've read it seems the n9 has features not finished or enabled but can, so i would expect added functionality with the future updates.

What about Mahjong? The killer game on Maemo :)

Question to you - o priviliged one- how is "Share pictures online"?

The out of the box experience of N900 was the greatest to date for Flickr users. Select multiple pictures and batch upload to Flickr.
Surprisingly the camera phone of the past year N8 missed the good old Symbian "share online" had to do it with unpractical and insecure third party software. Today one still has to use pixelpipe

Harmattan based, N9 does equal or better than N900 I hope?

Also, did you test the Skype "video" already ?

Thanks for any input and sharing of experiences.

no mahjong, sadly. no video calling yet, though ive forwarded the question to the nokia head honcho in norway.

picture sharing is very easy to picasa at least, and by extention flickr.

not sure what you mean with the harmattan question though?

on the "can someone buy phones and sell" thing, i said im considering selling mine, but no bites.

with the front cam not even available to use with camera app this sounds like a N900 all over again. and as stubborn are the management are being about not making it available in NA, i think i am kind of having a second thought. and there is another issue of warranty, on the past all the nokia phones that i have purchased was always on my trip to asian countries or in europe and i did not really care for warranty then as nokia always had a top of line hardware with almost no issues. but my last nokia N95 8gb had a slider problem and Nokia usa didnot wanted to fix it because N95-3 was not available as of yet. and then came N900 which i got lucky that it was officially sold in usa since i almost wnt through 6 of these due to some hardware related problems.
its only 20 minutes left before apple shows what they are showing today, and atleast when apple talks about their products they give exact time i am able to buy and i know for sure that the countries i go to fixes my apple products even though i purchased them in usa, and they also mak sure that if there is any hardware present in the phone consumers can use them unlike nokia.
everyone talks about voting with your wallet and i guess its about time everybody vote against nokia by not buying their products and going to their who ever the biggest rival is to show that even before stake holders you need to satisfy your consumer base.

"The antenna on Iphone4S is better than Iphone4" WHAO fantastic!

"The camera is 73% better than before" is it bnetter than N9 thats the question?

It will sell in tens of millions in matter of months.
But it's still disappointment to us who don't passionately hate everything Apple and just wanted the bigger screened, Apple flagship.

Still possible that they announce iPhone 5 later on. Because at this point when iphone is the norm, they need phone with smaller screen as well.

Here's what someone at Nokia Converations just posted, pretty-much spot on:

The Apple way of making announcements:

Here is the new ipod nano, available in stores now;
Here is the new iOS, iOS 5, available for update on 12 october;
Here is the new ipod touch, available on 12 october;
Here is the new iPhone, iPhone 4S, available on 12 october.

All that in ONE week.

Now the Nokia way of making anouncements:

Here is the Nokia N9, Best smartphone in the world, will take longer than 3 months to reach stores and will NOT be available in big markets.

I'm definitely not an Apple fan, but this just goes to show why nokia is failing.

I went to a (different) mobilezone shop in zürich today and was told (again) that the actual phones are arriving next week. they had a few N9 dummies for me to play around with though :)
Here is what i think of the colors:

"Magenta": it is pink. Really really pink. From the promotion pictures on the web i thought it would be more of a pastel-color (and a bit dull), but on the dummy-phone it was very flashy. (Maybe not for me^^)
Edit: on closer inspection the mediocre display of my laptop is to blame, the promo-pics of the N9 look much better on my Eizo screen

"Cyan": Brilliant, i love that color. It goes very well together with the deep-black screen (still a dummyphones screen though) Back looks good too, i had the fear the camera module would look awkwardly small when paired with a light color.

"Black": it looked disappointingly dull next to the other two colors. it also isn't really black, it is more like "dark grey", similar to (i think) the E7 and N8 "dark grey" versions. It looked meh compared to the deep black of the screen. Maybe a flashy lockscreen on a working N9 would help...

(The black dummy had some weird scuff marks on the plastic next to the "glass" screen which made me wonder if it's made of the same supposedly high-grade polycarbonate the production devices are made of, maybe they'll vastly differ in color too...)

I don't really know what to do now, i've pre-ordered a black 64GB version three weeks ago and it should arrive any day, but somehow it looks a bit dull (but still great compared to other phones) and i would kick myself if a few weeks from now there would be a cyan 64GB version available.

So what should i do? Is there any info yet on the (non)-existence of a cyan 64gb Nokia N9? :)

How abot TV-out? Does it support HDMI 720p or not?

I gather you've only just started following the N9?
No 480i only (i.e. standard definition) via the 3.5mm jack for countries that use the NTSC standard.*
However streaming of 1080p using DLNA + 802.11an MAY eventually be possible, or at least 720p.
You'll need a media player or TV that supports DLNA, & has 802.11an built-in or is addable.

*in PAL/SECAM countries it's 576i

Ofcourse we dont get those problems its Linux.

Even N900 without CSSU works better than symbians peace of **** :(

(make me even more angry WHY Did they npow realise this already 2009 and whiped out symbian and go Maemo! Damn symbian fanatics inside Nokia! I blame them for the WP **** strategy!!

Annoying thing is, there's still a rabid Symbian base, whom are constantly chanting for Symbian over Maemo.
In most Nokia related stories, in the comments section, you're almost guaranteed a majority of comments like:

Please can we have Belle now, and please bring C, & D, & don't worry about WP!

Most of them don't even know MeeGo/Maemo/Mer exists, or care.
It could've been so different, if it weren't for the whle N900 cock-up... sigh.
