View Full Version : Headset Compatibility on the N9?

Anyone else having any wired headset compatibility problems?
I have a pair of Sony Earbuds with an inline mic/volume button, and the phone either won't recognize it at all, or pipe through a bunch of ticking noise (with a bit of music). Very annoying.
So with that, anyone know of a fix (perhaps at the kernel level, pulseaudio, or something of the like) aside from a cable change.
And, anyone else running into problems?

Works fine with a pair of Pioneer IEMs I have, as well as the bundled headphones. I also used the IEM that was bundled with the Nokia N97 Mini with no issues.
I'm guessing the issue is more with the N9 not talking the right language to the Mic/Volume portion of your Sony earbuds... similar to how the N97 bundled IEM with play/pause/mic/volume sound like tins when used on my Macbook Pro.
On my Macbook Pro, the "solution" (if you can call it that) is to not insert the stereo jack 100% into the socket... although you probably won't want to do this all the time :P

Yeah...It's protocol. Mine is a 'Made for iPhone' device. I thought Nokia switched to that pin layout at the N900.

You can get unpredictable results using headphones made for one phone model on a different manufacturer's phone. Third party headphones like my Sennheiser works superbly with N9.

I just ran into this with my Phonak Audeo PFE 122 earphones with microphone. I can confirm that earphones with in-line microphones that are compatible with the iPhone will not work with the Nokia N9.
Those of you with standard earphones without in-line microphones and with standard TRS tips are probably okay. People who already own a headset with an in-line microphone and a TRRS tip might need to be more careful. (TRRS tips have an extra section; see the pictures at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS_connector#Uses.)
Apparently, the iPhone expects headsets to be wired T-left, R-right, R-ground, S-microphone. (See the great illustration at http://geekspeak.org/blog/2008/08/12/iphone-headset-plug.) On the other hand, the Nokia N9 wants its ground and microphone in the other order — T-left, R-right, R-microphone, S-ground.
Hopefully, this means that those of us who already own headsets designed to be compatible with the iPhone will just need an adapter to switch the R and S wiring to use our headsets with the N9. I've ordered http://www.meelec.com/MEE_TRRS_Adapter_for_P_Version_Headphones_p/adptr-trrs-35.htm, and I'll try to remember to post back whether this was successful after I get it.
Update 2012/5/29: Please see my updated adapter recommendation (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1214704#post1214704).

Cool, I'll try that for mic support. For the time being, I'm getting by with using just a stereo extension cord. It gets me audio just fine.

This this arrived on Friday, and I'm happy to report that it works perfectly -- I have functioning audio playback in the earphones, recording from the microphone, and recognition of button presses to pause music playback and pick up calls.
My only concern is that the wire between the two ends of this adapter seems inordinately thin. Hopefully it will hold up in the long term...

Hi, i'm also looking for a compatible headset for the N9.
Could you please tell me which sennheiser headset you're using and if you could get play/stop/forward/answer, ... functions working with it?
Thanks

Why is it that the old remote media controls (eg, from N95's included headset) are not working on the N900 and N9? Is there any workaround to this?

My Nokia WH-701s work with my N9 but don't work with my N900. However, I did buy them from ebay and so I'm not sure if they're a knockoff.

Are you able to use the play/pause/fast forward buttons?

Yup, all the buttons (volume and answer keys also) work with the N9.

why not get the nokia-made bh111 bluetooth stereo headset, its colors match your n9 perfectly and work fully with n9,

No, I am looking for a wired solution mainly because:
1. Battery consumption: how is the battery consumption for the BH111 for playing continuous music?
2. I travel by public transportation a lot and pick pocketing is a problem. With my wired headset listening to music, i can know if my device is being stolen ;)
I just bought the Nuforce NE-700m and they don't work with the N9 at all. Tried them on the N900 and can hear music but with a buzzing noise.
Strange because I was using the Nuforce NE-6 well with the N9 & N900.
Will either get an adapter or give to an iphone user for xmas.
changed the headphones at the shop to 700x with no mic, they sound great.

I did the same, and got the same problem. They work just fine with my gf's N8 though. :-/

Anyone going to get the new Nokia/Monster Purity earphones? My Bose in-ear ones are starting to crumble into nothing, and the blue Purity's would match my new cyan N9 quite nicely ;)
There's a store in NYC selling them for just over 100 bones

AFAIR Purity headset does not work with N9. It's meant for Lumia 800 and WP. You can plug them in and they won't make a sound.
using here BH-111 + Denon AH-C710, or just Denon AH-C710 and I am satisfied. Check out the QuasarMX player, BTW. There's a thread on that in the MeeGo/Harmattan forum. Quite a useful player although still WIP.

anyone knows if the hifiman re-262 will work with the n9?
also, how will the high impedance (150ohms) and 95dB sensitivity affect the battery consumption or sound quality in any way?
thanks

My only concern is that the wire between the two ends of this adapter seems inordinately thin. Hopefully it will hold up in the long term...
Well, the concern came to pass, and about six months later, the insulation broke where the wire connected to the male connector of the adapter, exposing the underlying copper.
I have since acquired a FiiO LU2 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/834119-REG/Fiio_LU2_LU2_Smart_Adapter_Cable.html) adapter, and it works like a charm. The build quality also seems to be much better than the MEElectronics adapter. There's also the FiiO LU1 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/834115-REG/Fiio_LU1_LU1_Smart_Adapter_Cable.html) for those who want a straight plug rather than an L plug.

What do you mean? There is no recognition involved here. All your home stereo needs is the appropriate signal input. If you connect the N9 speaker output to your stereo amp, you need a low signal input to get any output, not AUX or CD which are high signal inputs. Otherwise you can pass it through a headphone amp before plugging into your home stereo.

If you guys look at my post in this thread :http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1217600#post1217600
you can still get headphones with mics to work. without an adapter
what i have to do to get it to work: plug in my headphones almost all of the way in just a milimeter or two out or just to where it makes that ugly buzz noise and where you can just barely hear your music/video.
then open the app on this page http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=80006&page=2 "headphonefix.deb", and it should work perfect. dont move the headphones though.
thats for people who dont want to spend $5-10 for a adapter lol, id rather buy one though..

Don't move the headphones? So are you saying listen/talk with milimeter or two out?

there was some devices that had hardware issue, like mine and Mitrandir's, /dev/input/jack don't register anything from jack input, so, Mitrandir made "fix" it's actually a simple hack by simulating jack input.
it is not intended for use with iPhone's (inverted) jack and using it as such can (maybe) harm your device.
//edit:
probably there will be sound...though

i havent tested the mic working or not, just the headphones. whenever you hear the static open the app then leave the headphone jack alone and it should work. id leave music playing when testing it

I know the Nokia HD over ears headphones work. I tested it in a Microsoft store on my Nokia N9. The optional control talk cable probably won't work.

Should headsets made for (modern) BlackBerry & Android devices (3.5 mm TRRS, 1 button + mic) work fine on the N9?
Is it possible to use 2 bluetooth headsets, lets say the bh-111, simultaneously with just one Nokia N9? I want to listen to music from my N9 and share the experience with a friend, while lets say we do food shopping in a loud and crowded supermarket. :)
Thx

I am quite pissed off, I ordered some Nokia WH-701s and they don't work (at all, not with 1mm out etc) with my N9. Didn't have an iPhone at hand to recheck so far, but how the **** can it be so hard so leave something stupidly simple as a headphone-connector alone?!

I tested Original Beats - Studio @ a Samsung Store, they were super awesome, didn't know my sound can go this far. Battling to get Wireless Beats though.

My WH-701s work perfectly - all media controls work in Music player and FM radio (not in gPodder unfortunately)
I also have the Nokia Essence BH-610 BT noise cancelling headset - excellent sound quality and everything works with the N9 (inc NFC) but for me the cables are too short (I feel a bit conspicuous using the included neck strap)

I recently bought the SonyEricsson MH1 wired headset. and they work beautifully on N9 and N900.Works like a single button headset.
Remember to check for the green sony-ericsson logo. Only this works.
Reviews:

Was a bit pricey(SGD 118). But if you need a good headset, then this is recommended.
Also any Iphone compatible headset can be used, with Fiio LU1/LU2 adapters, to work like a single button headset.
Already suggested earlier. I just got this one too and can confirm it works well;
The Fiio LU1 might be better option than to get a full headset that only works on the old nokia smarties.
