Just received my N9 last week and noticed that there is a bit of creaking in the plastic body on the left hand side. Basically, the body creaks whenever I hold the phone and attempt to press the unlock button. Phone has never been dropped at all.
Anyone else have this issue?

I believe the phone has a Singapore warranty, not sure how to handle warranty claims like this...
I don't mind paying for shipping, but does anyone know if I be dinged heavily for duty, etc. to have it sent overseas and back for service?

Yes! Mine creaks about 4cm from the bottom left handside.

Anyone else have this issue?Mine does a little, but I can't tell if its the silicon cover that's just rubbing against it. its hard to reproduce.
Either way, I can live with it, especially since I got it from out of Country. I doubt Nokia USA will care. I probably squashed it a bit while it was in my pocket, it definitely didn't have the problem when it was new.

Mine feels solid.....no creaking at all.....is it even possible to creak when it's made out of one piece material?
Of course, if the casing has room in it to bend inwards, I guess, not fully saturating the components in polycarbonate.

I think the area between the screen and the case can become slightly loose over time, introducing a creaking sound if you hold the phone and squeeze it slightly. That's what's happened with my wife's phone it appears.

my screen now makes a very slight pop sound if you firmly press the center, almost like it is not fully seated in the body.
it comes and goes.

it comes and goes.I wonder what the substructure is made out of. I would think Polycarbonate would be less or more affected by temperature change (I'm thinking less), but if the substructure if metal (and plastic PCB) and the glass cover is... glass... then we have a whole bunch of components expanding and contracting at different rates. Combine that with a unibody design and I can see what we have some creaking. Obviously they probably engineered tolerances. Like I indicated, I can live with it. I'd rather have a phone that creaks but I can drop and not worry about it shattering, than a phone that doesn't creak but is so fragile to any drops/stresses.
Obviously, Polycarbonate has some flexibility in it, which makes it sturdy... .because, right, if something is less flexible, it has a tendency to shatter/dent/break when stressed (eg when dropped). Lol I remember years ago, taking my Polycarbonate water bottle and SLAMMING it from a height of at least 5 feet into concrete, the thing bounced, scratched a bit, but otherwise no permanent damage. I can't say I can do the same with my Stainless Steel water bottles... at least without a big ol' dent (I've dropped a couple from waist height).

I mentioned the same sounds when i press the body a few mm under the on/off button :-( I have the feeling that the display isn't 100% fitted into the body.

What make is your device, where did you get it from?

I get creaking with my N9 also when squeezing it from left & right sides inwards, more prevelant towards the upper 1/3 of the body. N9 is sourced from Singapore and lives in HK... around 25C today.
I also noticed a small gap between top of glass and frame maybe 0.5mm (worried about it being a dust magnet). It is, however, flush to glass on the sides and bottom edges. Almost like the glass is too short for the frame. Perhaps this tolerance is needed to fit the unit into the body.
Anyone else have this?
I'm also experiencing creaking around the lower half, both sides I think.
Removing the (very nice) silicon case makes no change.
I tried ignoring this for a while but it occurs so often during normal usage it's quite unsettling. I also notice there is some movement between glass and polycarbonate body, which I suspect may be the cause. Maybe the adhesive holding the two has come off?
I didn't have this issue with my first 64GB (Austrian batch which suffered from chronic reboot/crashes) and so have arranged an exchange.
I really didn't want to do this as I'm really liking this phone but it's difficult to have confidence in the current unit, so thought it would be better to deal with it now than when it potentially leads to a bigger problem later and have to deal with Nokia Warranty (who finally replaced my N900 with USB detached fault with another N900 after first providing me an E7).

I have the same thing with my N9. It seems to happen when I press the sides of the phone and the top. This is definitely the sound between the body and the screen. I started to notice it much more when I was putting it in to my new Nokialeather case that's really tight. Bothered me a little till I saw this thread. I guess i am not the only one :)

Mine creaks too, i think it has been made worst because its in the cover!
when you push the power button, it feels like you have to push it harder as its very tightly protected by the case! and you sort of push on the case and button at the same time. If you use your nail its easier but early pushing has probably caused the creaking!

That's also my impression. They should've flattened the case more at this point.

That's also my impression. They should've flattened the case more at this point.I recently switched to the blue silicon cover, and while it was out I kind of firmly just pushed it all over.
It seemed to not creak for awhile, but sure enough it started again.
I suppose it could be the tight cover.
I (at least not yet) am not noticing any permanent damage or other ill-effects. Its a little annoying, but meh, beggers can't be choosers (you know, since Nokia doesn't really give two.... about we Maemo/Meego users).

Spray the inside of silicon cover with silicone spray then wipe it a bit, and there wont be any cracs.

Isn't silicone spray on silicon supposed to dissolve the silicon of the silicon case, because it has to keep the silicon in the silicon spray-can liquid?
Arrrr xD
But this is a valid question.

That "silicon case" is made from plastic...

Mine creaks, and it's definitely the unit itself, not the silicone case. Not a dealbreaker though, just mildly disconcerting.

I don't get it. It's a unibody, I don't know how it can crack.

same issues here. My n9 i used the case and pushed against it. But now.have removed the case, thankfully the creaking is not as.bad yet.
they should made it easier to press power.button. Now my power buttons allow slightly recessed.

I just got my white N9 last week, and I'm also experiencing this issue. It makes me cringe whenever I press the lock button or volume keys..
My device creak whenever pressure is put just below the middle of the device on the left side.

Okay, I guess I'm not the first to experience this, but my device is now feels solid and has ceased making creaking noises. I haven't made any modifications to it, or abused the device.

Old thread, but my N9 started creaking recently, and I've had it since early December. It does it when I push the screen on the left side, right near where the screen meets the plastic body, and about 3/4 from the top. Must be the screen coming apart from the body, ever so slightly. The phone felt so solid when I got it that this does bum me out. Especially since I have no hope of warranty in the U.S.

Yeah, common problem. Maybe changing the housing could solve the problem. Anybody with creaking body tried?

Oh I thought I was the only one with this issue!
I received my black N9 and from day one it was making this noise! I called Nokia Canada regarding manufacturers warranty. I was on the phone with them for a few weeks and was ultimately told to piss off.
My phone was not abused in any way, although it pains me to say it, I am glad I am not the only one. This further proves it is a manufacturer defect.
Their reps are completely uneducated regarding the N9 and offered me no assistance. I even had one of state that because the phone was not released in Canada or USA they would not honour any warranty plain and simple.
Nokia manufactured this product, with a defect. And because the phone crossed some imaginary border they get to wipe their hands clean of any responsibility regarding the defects? I don't think so.
Anyways, the seller I purchased this from was nice enough to take it back and is sending me another one. Hopefully this one does not have the same issue.
Is there anything we can do? petition? writing campaign?

Well, petition and writing campaign is useless. Sadly, it's just the thing of the N9 / Lumia 800 construction. Some creak, some don't. I was posting my story here some time ago, but from some weird reason, it didn't appeared. Anyway, I had the very same problem, so I contacted my seller here, they said, that it's none of their bussiness, that it's not a reason for exchange and sent me to their service partner. At the service, they said, that they cannot do anything with that and sent me to the higher level Nokia partner service here. Because the higher level service partner was out of the town, I wrote to the Nokia Care with question, what to do. They said service is non of their bussiness and recommended me to send it for repair to the service out of town. But I didn't want a ****ing service of brand new device. So I went to the Nokia Flagship store, and ask for their opinion about the creaking. They said, that only my seller can change me to phone, but admitted, that the N9 shouldn't creak and that I should go for a replace. Plus they also gave me a contact for a highest level Nokia service in my city. So I wrote to that service, and asked them about it. They said, that they have to see it, and that they can write me some kind of review, if the phone should be exchanged (for money of course). So I took my N9 there, let them write the review, they said, that it has this problem and that it meets all the conditions for warranty. Than I went to the seller and told him about my problem, he said, that it's not a problem for exchange and that I should sent it to the service. So I showed him the paper from the other service. Than at once he miraculously changed his approach and said, that of course, they will replace me the phone :) But first they have to send it to Nokia, for other expertise. So they took me the phone, I waited for like a month and got the phone changed for a new one. Well, the new one I've got creacks even more :)

My black 64GB one (bought back in October) has a slight creaking when pressing the sides hard. That's bearable for me.
The Magenta one of my girlfriend creaks a LOT already when only very gently pressing into the sides. But I have to admit, she already dropped hers countless times, so we don't complain :-D

My N9 was creaking from the bottom right third of the phone. It was sent to Nokia for repair and no longer creaks. I believe that they have replaced the case. This must be a known issue ?

Civilization..
My n9 was defective (motherboard. reboots & freezes all day long) and replaced (the board) after 11 weeks (sent it 4 times).
There was a huge problem and took them 11 weeks to fix the phone (they updated my software 3 times and completely ignored me).
I cant imagine how many times ill have to send the phone for the creacks issue..
So nokia service is not an option for me..
All hail Nokia Greece
