Hi,
After update to PR 1.1 my headphones are not detected automatically anymore.
If I want to use them, I need to plug them in and reboot the N9.
When done, I have to reboot in order to use the loud speakers instead.
Any idea how to fix this?

"Has anyone else experienced problems with their headset port since updating to PR1.1 ?
Mine no longer detects any headphones are connected at all. However turn off the device and plug in headphones and once booted the headphones will work, however unplug them with the device on and the loudspeaker will no longer work and people wont be able to hear you if they call either. So i have to restart the phone once more without headphones attached to bring normal service (albeit one that doesn't have a working headphone jack) back to the phone...
I want to see if anyone else has this problem as its quite different to the occasionally fussy like or not like of certain branded headsets others have reported. This affects ALL headsets / headphones including the Nokia ones included in the box.
I used to use Bluetooth headset before PR1.1 so I can not testify as to whether it is the update that has broken the auto-detection of the device (headphones connected or not) or whether the issue has been on my handset all along.
One could be attributable to a software issue, but could also likely be a hardware issue requiring repair or replacement. Before I go without my phone for 2 weeks or more could I ask others to check their PR1.1 updated handsets for the same issue.
Many thanks

Have you searched the bug-tracker to see if anything similar's been reported?
Try a full reset perhaps? Failing that...
Backup any content you have (not setting/apps) i.e. music, vids, docs etc.
And then do a full re-flash... Failing that...
Lodge a bug report on bug-tracker, if there isn't already one that's similar.

My N9 still detects my headphones normally in PR1.1. Try a hard rest and see if it cures the problem.

Had the same issue after update, as well as a 'ping' sound at start up.
Reset didn't help.
Reinstall via NSU didn't help either.
Sent it to Nokia Care 2 Fridays ago, and they're replacing the motherboard. Stil haven't got it back though, so couldn't say if the problem is solved.
Off topic, Nokia Care is REALLY sucky after Nokia sub contracted it to some jokers. Before it was on the spot repairs or 3 days at most.
On the plus side, I gained the breathing LED notification light at the expense of the headphones...

Thanks for the response. I suspect it may require hardware fix. Worried as it means probably won't get my phone back till after christmas or new year if I send it off for repair now, but better to send it off I guess and get it sorted.
Oh and yes, the ping sound is there when my phone boots up too.

That doesn't work. Problem persists.
I also have problem, but with not nokia branded headphones..
The problem the OP and I describe is different to the occasional pickiness of the phone and headset brands.
This affects ALL headphones regardless of branding unfortunately.
____________
At this stage, I may just get a new phone (Lumia 800 or iPhone4s) and sell this one off when it comes back from repair. As much as I like the N9 and meego, the user experience and dealing with Nokia Care hasn't been very good at all unfortunately.

You tried a re-instal/re-flash?
Worth it if it works, you don't have to bother sending-it-off then.
I know it didn't work for joelsk, & he sounds very similar, but you never know.
Sounds most likely like a hw issue though.

No issue here thank god with PR1.1... I use my headphones way to much to have this issue!

Yes i too have hard reset and re-flashed, alas to no avail.
Will be despatchibg mine by post to Nokia Ireland for repair. Unfortunately as the phone is not officially available here, it could mean a long protracted repair, and given the time of year - I'm not expecting to see this phone till early January.
Nokia care terrible service on the phone..
Rang Nokia Care Ireland. I had to fight with Nokia on the phone for them to even agree to look at my phone. They kept telling me that as it wasn't officially available here, I'll have to send it to Expansys.
I pointed out to them that by EU law any item sold within the EU and being used in the EU is covered by law and is eligible for warranty service by the manufacturer.
Nokia on the phone continued to refuse to help and hung upon me.
I went to Nokia discussions on their website and found an administrator / moderator and explained what happened. They took my IMEI and checked it. As the phone was intended for Switzerland and I was in Ireland, they concurred that under the EU limited warranty I was entitled to service repair / replacement if necessary, and that the information from the phone support was completely wrong and will be taken up with them.
They sent me a PDF to fill out and send my phone off with on a freepost address.
Getting service shouldn't require this much hassle in 2011. If I didn't know my rights as an EU citizen I would have basically just been palmed off and left feeling I had wasted nearly €600 on a broken defective device.
Terrible service upto this point, and no matter what it tarnishes the relationship you have with your device. n9 I used to love you, now I'm wondering if youre truly worthy of my love at all ;)

Nokia Care actually answered the phone?
WOW!
Got so fed up of unanswered phone calls that i went there myself to get an update.
Nokia Care should have a tracking service to at least enable customers to track the progress of their faulty phones.. I'm sure that would be cheaper than hiring someone to NOT answer the phone.
Can report the same problem. Reboot doesnt work. I tried two different 3.5mm headphones and nothing.
Luckily I use bluetooth for my main use but this isnt acceptable. I can write a full page on things that dont work/annoy me about the N9.

Hi all,
I'm having the same symptoms on my N950.
And I finally (almost) solved the problem. I found the way to manually switch audio between speaker and headphones by simulating audio jack insertion/removing events.
I'm going to create an app to switch audio using an icon on homescreen. Probably today or tomorrow.
Are there any live users who want to test it?

I would like to test it.
For some reason the headset that comes with the N9 stopped working today (music played over speakers), though it seems to recognize it (screen unlocks). My other headphones don't give any problems, so it might be just the headset.
But anyway, worth a try and hopefully I can help you with it :).

Please test attached package.
It will create icon on the desktop which will toggle between speaker and headphone sound output.
It simulates real jack insertion/ejection events, device will behave as usual, for example, it will pause music when "ejecting" audio jack.
Hope it will help you.
I'm not sure what is the root couse of the issue. But I suspect that the problem is in audio jack construction. Because sometimes device detects headphones only when I'm pushing, tilting, squeezing the connector.

I'm not sure that problem is in hardware. May be software. Or may be even both :)
As far as I remember, Harmattan's firmwares are not downgradeable. So, no chance to check if problem was caused by PR1.1.

Cool! I'm happy that this works not only for me ;)
If you can create an icon for this hack, it would be just great. By the way, we need two icons: for headphones and speaker states, because I want to improve it to show current state of the sound output.
Don't forget to switch it back to Speaker when you remove headphones. Because if somebody will call you, you won't be able to answer without headphones — it will try to take voice from headset microphone.
And there is no Qt at all in this application ;) Just several hours of investigation and a bit of luck

thank you so much for this, my phone was dusty for long time...because of this issue

lol
shall we do real scalable icons? ;)
/*
do you think you can install some system wide hook to watch hardware events and then to switch write on /dev/input/jack so it can be as service?
i think that some even must occur when 3.5mm is plugged in/out
*/
Mitrandir

Either scalable, or just 80x80 PNG.
You can use this official icon toolkit and guide as starting point:
http://www.developer.nokia.com/Resources/Library/Design_and_UX/designing-for-nokia-platforms/Nokia%20Icon%20Toolkit.zip
http://www.developer.nokia.com/Resources/Library/Design_and_UX/designing-for-nokia-platforms/designing-for-meego-12-harmattan/meego-launcher-icon-templates.html
But, anyway, this is just an ugly hack, it probably doesn't deserve much effort for the icon :)

it's far better solution than lock button app for example, right? :D

i only have one pair of headphones that work with my n9, and they are ipod headphones that sound horrible without EQ -_- i have a couple other pairs that are pretty nice but none of them work, and they all have mics.. i think headphones with mics dont work with the n9?
whenever i plug them in they make a static noise like they are about to work but music continues to play through the loud speaker. but.. the app posted a page back helped. i have to mess with it though.
what i have to do to get it to work: plug in my headphones almost all of the way in just a milimeter out maybe and it makes a really ugly static buzz then i click on the app and BAM :D works. kind of a hassle, but im glad it works.. hopefully there is a permanent fix sometime.
edit: nvm did some searching and there appears to be an adapter i can use :)
also, i have a question; how exactly do make the icon above as the app icon? thanks
aShtk
06-05-2012, 05:58 AM
@Stratax : exactly ! Every headphone with a mic don't work, although one once worked with mine for some days, then I couldn't use it anymore (weird huh ?).
It seems to be a mix of a hardware / software issue, and the fix you posted don't resolve the problem for me : (
Mitrandir
06-05-2012, 06:29 AM
Guys, I have Nokia WH-205 with mic and also some Samsung headset with mic and both have worked great with N950 (which 99% equals to N9). But one day all headsets stopped working permanently. So, I don't think that problem is in microphone.
But may be your iPod headset simply has different pinout?
how exactly do make the icon above as the app icon?
Do you mean icon's graphics? Sorry, I have not integrated icon yet, but I will it right now.
But I can't find a reliable way to make icon display current state, so I will use static icon with audio jack.
the fix you posted don't resolve the problem for me : (
So, when you clicking on the icon, sound still goes to speaker?
The fix displays a messages "speaker → headphone" and "headphone → speaker" depending on change performed. Did you see both messages? Or only "speaker → headphone" one?

Here is new build of ‘headphonefix’ with the icon
@wook_sf Sorry, but I didn't integrated your idea with switching icon, because if device was rebooted or if device suddenly recognizes headset and changes audio output automagically, the icon will not reflect current state anymore. I don't know a good solution here. So, lets keep only one icon which will not reflect current state, but also will not cause misunderstanding.

yes, i noticed that :S what do you think about making a daemon that runs in background? or even autostart script that will simply copy headphonefix_0.svg to /home/user/headphone_icon.svg it is not a big deal, and i think i can find more events to simulate ;)

I have to test again to tell you the exact behavior.
I see both messages, and something happens, but when I plug the headphone I can hear the sound 1 sec sometimes, most of the time I hear a "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" then nothing, I have to unplug.
I test again and make you a full report asap.

Weird...
Have this headset worked before with N9?
I have two versions:
1. May be it has different pinout
2. May be degradation of your audio socket on device is worse than ours... :( And not only headset detection fails, but audio signal as well...
wook_sf
06-06-2012, 07:38 AM
maybe we should write proper audio drivers for this system, with system wide equalizer? Mitrandir, what do you think?
i was investigating last night, all possible events on input, and there's nothing that occurs during jack plug in/out :S
it's really strange...probably driver issue...probably
Mitrandir
06-06-2012, 07:57 AM
Actually, I'm not so good at linux' internals to write drivers :)
I have investigated audio inputs/outpus with alsamixer before creating my fix. When device does not recognize headset, nothing happens in alsamixer, you're right. If it does recognize, a couple of outputs gets muted, a couple another gets unmuted. But muting/unmuting these outputs gives nothing.
As far as I understood, there are two distinct audio devices in the phone — "twl4030" for speaker and external mics and "dac32" for headset. And when device correctly recognizes headset insertion and ejection, it powers down one audio device and powers up another.
Anyway, after investigating all this for a couple of evenings, it seems to me that this is more hardware than software issue... I don't think audio device driver or something might be broken. But I can imagine easily that some electric contact in connector was failed...
wook_sf
06-06-2012, 12:54 PM
i think it's not just connector, it's something else because i checked all contacts and they are fine (not that i have schematics, but it would be very good to have it)

its not just the ipod headset, its any headset with a mic (that im aware of). i hear a bunch of static if its almost all the way in but i can also kind of hear music (if playing) just a tad though, then when i open the app above the static goes away and it sounds perfect :)

That's strange... If this will appear again, please let me know how I can reproduce it. Seems like for some reason a state of jack stored by HAL was invalid and this made my script to think that headset was connected, although it was not.

No, there is no need in open kernel or inception. It should work without any hacks. It just seems like current jack state in HAL was stick at "inserted" while audio state was like it's "ejected". Fix gets current value from HAL and it wes continiously trying to "eject" it. After manual run of "switcher headphone", it get in sync and started to work correctly. Excuse my english if the explanation is bad.
And I just received a report from one more user who get fix sticked at speaker state. Seems like this is serious problem. May be we will need to have two distinct icons for speaker and for headset in order to avoid unsyncing... Or make it switching between two states without checking current state from HAL.

Hi,
Here is new build of headphonefix. Now it displays a window with four buttons for corresponding modes:
1. Speaker
2. Video out
3. Headset with mic
4. Headset without mic
I haven't tested VideoOut by myself because I don't have such cable, but one remote beta-testers reports its successful work.
@wook_sf, sorry I have not added your icons yet, will do in next build

i've installed it and tried with my ca-75u cable, audio works, but video doesn't go through the tv, just phone screen. i've tried connectin directly video+audio connectors, and through a euroconector.

That's sad :(
Have you connected cable to both phone and TV before clicking "Video Out" button? The order might be important here.

hello everyone, my N9 also has the same problem. I have to reset the phone with headphone plugged in everytime i want my phone to be in headphone mode and re-reset it if I want to switch back to speaker mode.
SO i installed the App from Mitrandir (thanks mate, very much appreciated), but it doesn't work on my phone :(. It was installed without any problem but it simply just doesn't switch to any other mode. (so looks like something is prevent the switching after the OS is loaded).
:( any idea why this is happening?? I am on PR1.3. It actually worked for me when I was on PR1.1 (i did not update EMMC at the time) and if i remember correctly it started happening after i installed PR1.2 (with EMMC).
:( any help is appreciated. Thanks alot

Strange... I just checked headphonefix 0.3 on my N9 with PR1.3 and it seems to work as expected.
I also received a report from a friend of mine that it doesn’t work on his N9 too.
I don’t know yet why it may happen. May be there are some hardware differences...

:( icic. Do u think this is a hardware issue?? it is meant to switch the mode automatically when headphone is plugged in without using any app so i wonder if there is any design faults in our n9s.
:) anyway thanks, please keep us up to date regarding to your friends n9 if you dont mind.

I think it is hardware issue or at least so lowlevel driver-related software bug that can be considered as hardware one.
I have 2 resons why I think it is hardware:
1. Sometimes when I move and rotate headset connector in the plug it suddenly got recognized by device. This is much like that audio plug has poor electric contact.
2. My friend mentioned above reports his N9 works perfectly with Nokia’s headset, but doesn’t work with his KOSS headphones.
I think some electric contact in audio plug that must report connecting/disconnecting doesn’t work while other contacts that actually transmit sound still works. My application just simulates connection/disconnection events.
I have no idea why it doesn’t work... May be contact is so poor that sound doesn’t work too. May be some other reason. This app is pretty hacky and my knowledge of the root couse is very poor...

oh yehh!! your app works on my phone now!! I just turn on Dev mode and installed a bunch of dev tools on the phone and it works. =D
I wasn't convinced that it was hardware problem cause your app just calls out the mode switching event (headphone connected or not) so it should at least switch mode on my phone regardless + the fact my phone actually switches mode when i restart it with headphone plugged in shows that it is compatible.
anyway im happy with switching it manually with your app so thanks a lot again. :)

May be I’m wrong saying that it is hardware... I’m not sure though
Glad that it working now! But I have no idea why Dev mode helped :) The app seems not to have any external dependancies...

when you start app, and switch to headphones, does it produce anything on earphones? even something like tap?

if there's "tsch" then your headphones are making issue, have you tried any other type?
as i saw this headphones have some sort of buttons (volume and music) that might be reason why there's no support/sound for them

I tried some different earphones, with the Iphone 4 and HTC earphones I also have that double tsch. With normal headphones without mic I don't even need to use the program to switch the mode. They work automaticlly.

if it's that so, then better don't use that program because it can damage either your phone or headphones.
try to find original headphones with mic made by nokia they will probably work with your n9 automatically :)

there's adapter, but i doubt it will work since hardware related to mic is not one that phone expect, so it makes problems...

2. My friend mentioned above reports his N9 works perfectly with Nokia’s headset, but doesn’t work with his KOSS headphones.
As your friend I can say that mine N9 did not worked with my modified KOSS headphones with mic from original Nokia headphones from Nokia 5130.
But I bought a new KOSS Porta Pro and they worked brilliant! untill this week.
Suddenly ALL headphones witch worked fine before (including original Nokia N9's headphones «from the box») stopped worked without manually switching. Even original N9 headphones. I am so disappointed :(
So does somebody tried to send their device to the Nokia or shop it has been bought for repair?

Much more convenient and usable. And no tangles of wires at last!
Battery drains faster, but it is noticeable only if you're listening all the time.

BH-214 is a good headset, for sure the fact that you can use your own headphone with it.
Bare in mind that it should stick quite close to your mouth in order to improve the speech quality.
I used to work for Nokia Accessories and whilst I can recommend the BH-214 to anyone I'd not use it, here's why.
1. Battery - not only of your N9, but as well your BH-214 (different connector so while travelling you need to bring microUSB as well as 2mm Nokia charger)
2. BT - WLAN - This is always a problem. Radio frequencies interfere with each other, We have the WlanScan toggle which will improve this stutter but it will not completely solve it
3. Not possible to lock the keys, so when you are accidentally pressing a button the music stops, starts over again or plays the next song, minor issue you might think, but have been in many situations where i really thought "bloody headset!"
These 3 reasons are KEY to me, and will be for many others.
So I'd recommend you buying the AD-54 (see it as a BH-214 but with a cable) - Use your own headphones with it, Quality wise a good buy.
Comes in white and black (both looking stylish) and the cost price on ebay is less than 10euro including shipment. (that's nothing!)
Don't worry about battery drainage / Stuttering music / Accidentally pressing a control button (you can lock keys :))
Disadvantage?
Nothing except for the fact that not all 3rd party apps are supporting it (e.g. Qspot - Flowplayer...)
Kroll
10-04-2012, 08:48 AM
So I'd recommend you buying the AD-54Thanks fellow, I do appreciate your advice but the only reason I think about BT headphones is that my N9 doesn't work with wired headphones (well it does if I use Mitrandir's headphone switcher application, but it is not very comfort to use and buttons on the headphones doesn't work even with this app).
I listen music about 4 hours a day so small battery in BH-214 it is not a problem (I think N9 with BT will die much faster if I forget to shut down Ethernet connection, lol) anyway, I can plug my Koss headphones directly in N9.
What about problem #2? I think I did not get it...
Mitrandir
10-04-2012, 08:57 AM
#2 is about radio frequency interference between BT and WiFi (and also microwave ovens :) ).
Though, I didn’t noticed such issues with my bt headset.
wout.martens
10-04-2012, 08:59 AM
No prob, dont really understand why wired headphones are not working with your N9?
I use ad-54 with B&W headphones and the sound is just perfect.
About #2, If you use internet (WLAN connection) while you're listening to music it might happen that your music will stutter. Packages are being send and delivered over WLAN so these signals can interfere with bluetooth connection.
I do say MIGHT as in some examples (depending on location of base station etc) almost no stutter is present.
thedead1440
10-04-2012, 09:04 AM
The stutter is also evident if another phone comes into the space directly between your headset and phone...

I had same issue with my N9 64GB Black PR1.3.
My N9 16GB never had this problem.
I thought it was hardware issue initially but then I noticed that this issue was only with N9+headset which came in box(WH-901).
When I tried few other headsets like 808s , they worked without any issue.
Also WH-901 worked in other phones.
I asked shop owner to give me new headset and he gave me Lumia 900's WH-902, and it worked great.
I was lucky to get replacement though I bought this N9 without warranty, imported piece as Nokia India never released it here.
I somehow feel this was some kind of software issue along with modifications Nokia did for Dolby stuff.
I noticed that WH-902/1 doesn't work with 808 showing message unsupported accessory.

I don't know if someone have noticed, but, if you try to record some video, and you have the profile of "headphones" or "headset with microphone" in the headphone fix, there is no audio record on the video... you have to set it "speaker" to record audio..

Strange that audio recording not working in "Headphones without mic" mode.
In "Headset with mic" it probably takes audio from mic.

Okay, so I know Lumia 920 is rolling out globally and it's cool and best and all that... But I still want to show care for my N9 64Gb and just bought replacement WH-902 that originally came with it (EU, Finland version) and which I lost long time ago.
The 902 came from eBay and shipped from Hong Kong. I have two problems:
- for one they don't work with my N9, when the original ones did when I got the phone in February (2012) but work with all other devices, while N9 works with most other "dumb" headsets (no MIC no call button) I tied.
- for second the WH-902 I got doesn't say "Nokia" on them anywhere and look a bit fake (lacquer not perfectly sharp on edges, steel grid is not so well brushed as I remember my original 902's)
Please let me know what you think: Why N9 + WH-902 I got = fail to work, and if you think there is a way to check if the 902 are fake.
For the record they came tucked into a plastic ribbon, no box. OEM like my original ones that were in the box of my Made in Finland Nokia N9.

I just thought I'd post that my N9 has just developed this problem. The earphones which Nokia supplied work, and one other set, but they aren't much good for me: they don't fit my ears well and I'm a bit deaf, so I spent lots of money on a better set of Phonak earphones and an amplifier. Neither of them are recognised by the phone now, so wasted money unless I buy a separate MP3 player that works.
Unfortunately headphonefix doesn't work on my phone either, which is a terrible shame as it seemed an ideal solution. I'm not sure if I've installed it wrongly or something, I'm pretty ignorant about the phone. I just double clicked on it in the file manager, having set the phone to install non Nokia Store software. It looks as if it installed ok, but the buttons don't appear to do anything. Anyway, thanks greatly to Mitrandir for trying, and I'm glad if others have found it works. If anyone can suggest anything to get it going on my phone I would be very grateful.

Okay so I just found out that there is WH-902 and also WH-901 out there and that the 902 uses "American" AHJ jack vs the OMTP connector which I assume N9 uses. Just a speculation here, but perhaps answers why I have the problem. (http://www.nokia.com/gb-en/support/troubleshooting/?action=singleFAQ&caseid=FA136274_en_US)

You can tell if that's the problem if you hold down the button and plug the headset in and they're recognised a plain headphones.
The N9 does indeed use the "standards body that no-one listened to" standard whereas iPhones, thus most 3rd party headsets, thus most Androids, thus Lumias use the "Apple did it this way so we'd best make it work" standard.
So to make an iPhone headset work on the N9 you'll need to buy or make (https://twitter.com/stephenspencer/status/277805561725194242/photo/1) an adaptor.
