Alternate OS for 770..... Windows?

Before I get flamed, I am an avid debian linux user (ubuntu) so I am not dissatisfied with maemo.... but it would be nice to take advantage of some of the more developed aspects of a windows ARM OS, like windows ce or something along those lines. I mainly want the easily downloaded gps maps and a program that will run them. I have maemo mapper, but cache-building is tedious to gain detailed maps.

So, has anyone tried installing windows ce on this little device or am I alone here? If so, how might one go about installing it... maybe dual-booting it with maemo?

Talk Microsoft into letting you pay for a WinCE development license (or whatever they call it). Mortgage your house to pay for it. Port the hardware dependent parts of the base WinCE OS to the 770. Once you're done you still won't be able to show anyone the code unless you pay Microsoft more to distribute it.

It would probably be a lot easier to write a shell script that downloads maps better...

Purchasing software from microsoft was never my intention. I was just asking if it was possible, but I guess not. So maemo is the only open source ARM operating system available? I guess I will have to see what Ubuntu mobile will have to offer when it is released.

Plain and simple not possible... There was users who got Win98 to run using emule but it ran like shite.... My opinion is that once ubuntu mobile releases it will be a second option for maemo users.... In red Pill Mode you will see packeges allready named for ubuntu...... But hey you have a Linux device and you want to install windows?!? Bad bad bad ;)

i mostly want windows apps like the developed GPS programs. I am not a programmer so I have no idea how to write a program to build gps maps for me to use on maemo mapper. for now it is just scanning around town to my most frequent locations in order to build a cache so I dont have to have internet access while on the road..... mobile internet = too much $$$

btw, is wine a possibility on this device?

There's no such thing. You can do it in DosBox or BOCHS, but trust me - you don't want to.

It wont, and can't happen. If you want a windows mobile device, you get a windows mobile device. There is no way of getting it on any of the nokias. However, if you want a windows mobile device, there are a lot of them in all different shapes and sizes, including some similar to the nokias.

You could
1) Get a separate GPS
2) Buy the navicore stuff for the 770 (you can get it on ebay)
3) Get a better mobile internet plan

All of them would be better than trying to run windows 98 in emulation on a nokia 770. It would probably take you 15 minutes just to find out where you are (you would be quicker asking someone!)

Maemo mapper has a builtin function to download maps for an area at any level of detail in one go.
