Application manager - OPERATION FAILED - All my installed apps are gone.. Am i F***ED

I am a total newb at this thing, i've had it for 2 days.

I finally got the repositories to work...

Installed Python, Pidgin, Mplayer, UKMP,

Then when installing KMplayer i get a install error, and now my application manager is f-ed.

I load it, it says "operation failed" I click ok , go to show installed apps, nothing... install new apps, nothing.


LOG says this:

osso-application-installer 4.22.1 UI version1
E: Problem parsing dependency Depends
E: Error occurred while processing telepathy-gabble (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened

Am I screwed?

Please Help!

There is a backup file for application status.

As root user, copy /var/lib/dpkg/status-old to /var/lib/dpkg/status and refresh the application list.

(edit), this is what i did when i had that error and it saved me. When i looked at my status file, it had some corruption (non-ascii characters) in it. This may not be the best solution. Searching the web for these errors also yields the suggestion to run:

dpkg --configure -a

So YMMV, HTH, HAND. :P

Sometimes if you look at the error message from the log, it will tell you which repository is giving the trouble, Menu>Tools>Appl manager>Tools>Log. If not clear, then you would have to do it one by one as suggested by TA-t3.

two ways to take care the appl manager problem:
1) try to clear the offending log, if sucessful, then close, show installed appl, and uninstall any prog you want.
2) Menu>Tools>Appl Manager>Tools>appl catalog, hi light the offending repo, edit>uncheck Enabled. If the log does not give clear message about which one is the offending repo, then you may have to enable/disable the repo one by one. Once the offending repo is disabled, then you will be able to refresh appl manager, and Show installed appl, and uninstall any prog you want.

It kinda sounds like you're in panic mode still. "I tried everything" doesn't really tell us anything. Have you tried to uncheck the items recommended by bunanson?

Yes, didnt work. I cant install anything new. I went through each repository, i just reflashed it from the nokia website... i didnt have much on here anyways.

No problem. If I were you, the *first* thing I'd install is xterm as well as the dropbear server. That way, if it goes all jacked up on you again, you can do some of the lower-level tips that were recommended in this thread, and not have to reflash.

I've often seen xterm recommended here as a way to diagnose and fix problems, so I recently downloaded and installed it. But I have absolutely no idea how to use it, and I haven't been successful in searching for documentation or a user guide. Beyond installing xterm, any suggestions for me and this poor chap with the crippled tablet?

[PS: I've also often noticed on this site that kind and helpful power user/programmer types don't realize that the vast majority of owners of the N800 and other tablets are not experts in using terminal programs and don't have a clear grasp and detailed knowledge of the underlying operating system and file architecture of their devices. I don't even know where to start educating myself properly, apart from reading as many posts as I can here on Internet Tablet Talk. Have pity on us, oh wise geeks!]

The underlying operating system is based on debian gnu/linux, which is a unix-like operating system.

So your question "what to do in an xterm?" translates into "how do I use linux?"

There are good introductions on the web, and courses in community colleges and private instruction firms available. One good way to learn linux is to download and boot a debian-based livecd like sidux (www.sidux.com) or ubuntu. This allows you to experiment on your PC without changing or damaging the installed operating system on your pc.

It's funny how the 770 is a more powerful machine than the $7000 'unix workstations' i used in college.

I got the Operation Failed error after installing Osso Xterm. Following Bunanson's suggestion 2, I disabled ALL the packages listed in the Application Catalog and then was able to refresh the Installed App list and no more error.

Do i need to re-enable the packages? The apps seem to work fine. What happens if i don't re-enable them?

Thanx! I had the same problem with my 770 and disabling some of the repositories helped to solve it.

Thank you. The dpkg --configure -a command above just saved me. There was a few characters of corruption at line 1999 of my /var/lib/dpkg/status file. I removed the corruption, saved, and Application Manager worked again. This problem has been puzzling me for several days. Again, thank you.

I also had the problem of Application Manager opening with the message Operation Failed. As I moved around Application Manager to make things better, instead things got worse. Any apps in Show Installed Applications disappeared; then I couldn't open Application Catalogue; etc.

Fortunately a Google ITT Search brought me to Makurosu's post which referenced ArnimS's account. (I put in the long first paragraph hoping it might help some future googler.)

I ran, I think as root, in Xterm

dpkg --configure -a

and all that appeared to happen was that I was returned to the prompt. But it magically fixed any corruption problems. No more corrupt App Mgr, happy me. :) Thanks, Makurosu and ArnimS!

There's a simpler answer to the question "how do I use xterm," though. It is that you use it the way people used to use DOS. It gives you a command line and you type in instructions for the computer to follow. (And the command line is still used, of course, in Windows.)

Often, people give the exact instructions so you don't have to understand what you are doing very much. Some of the instructions are pretty clear -- apt-get update, for example, has something to do with updating.

But using a live cd like the one for Sidux is a great idea, and there are many great Linux tutorials out there.
