View Full Version : Nokia Drive Question

Hi,
First post here :)
I am a new user of this N9 and i would like to ask a question. I would like to know is there is any option in the Nokia Drive to show estimated time of arrival instead of km left. iŽbeen looking though the settings but canŽt find any way to show ETA.
Thx!
Welcome to TMO.
I dont believe this feature currently exists. A lot of new things were bought to the table with the update PR1.2 but not this.
On an unrelated note- I noticed there is a speed limit set in the Settings. Mine is incorrect for my region - there seems to be no way to change this.

^Same idea came to my mind also... New bug for same category... Actually i haven't found any new, only kind of feature-request or entertainment... (oops, my bad)
Just checked that speedlimit -thing... Very odd implement, may i say... Would be very nice to see somekind of importing feature (.pot?) of those tincan-police coordinates...

You realize Soumaya and Risto and all are way too bogged down as is? They are doing their best, your frustration is with people far above them. Leave them alone and be appreciative of all they are doing for us. There was Kontorri, there's Sergey Kashin, and a few others, we have to treat the people that deal with us the best we can, so they can help push for what we want done. If they feel beat up and abused, they won't help our case. Put yourself in their shoes. They are trying to help us. Don't make their lives difficult.

How many people are left in Nokia's Harmattan team now? I fear to know the answer.

I said tempted... tempted... ;)
I'm know where most Nokia devs are positioned in this giant soap opera.
If I ever did it, it'd only be for bugs closely related to pre-existing ones, not enhancement requests.
Maybe I'd also report them where they've suggested, Nokia dev forum ;)
Welcome to TMO.

As I understood it, the "speed limit" in the Settings is actually only a threshold: if the speed limit on the road your're driving on is under 80Km/h, please warn me if I exceed the speed limit by X Km/h(you can choose a value between 0 and 30 Km/h, let's take for example 10 Km/h); if it is instead over 80Km/h, please warn me if I exceed the speed limit by Y Km/h (for example 20Km/h).
So if you're driving on a road where the speed limit is 100Km/h you'll get warned if your speed exceeds the 120Km/h but if the speed limit is 60Km/h you'll get warned if you exceed 70Km/h.

Apparently not. Real shame, especially as we started out with the better version of drive than the Lumia, now it's the N9 that is lagging behind :-(
Would have loved to have at least had the Alternative Routes feature, so needed.

It is still way better than Sygic Mobile Maps 10 on the n900. I cannot believe I paid good money fo that app. It was like a little puppy sat beside a pile of pooh.
Drive works very well and can be closed with a swipe rather than 3 screen moves and numerous button presses :(

I still use SMM10 over the N9 Drive in my n900. Despite of Nokia Drive being newer and more visually polished and possible more helpful in indicating the right lane in complicated junctions, N9 routing is awfully twisted, even unsafe (or amusing) as telling me to go into the Hammersmith bus station in London, where only double deckers buses are allowed to enter... since my car is red, it looked like a baby bus at the time :o.
Near my house also always tells me to turn against oncoming traffic in one way roads, etc. while SMM10 always get it right. I live in London, not in a small lost village ffs Nokia.
SMM10, even with obsolete maps, still makes use of some sort of common sense for the routing, it avoids u-turns, warns you of speed cameras and the most importantly, you can choose among alternative routes (somehow). Pity that Sygic is not releasing the newer Aura navigation software, it looked so promising for the N9.
Back to the point, could Ovi Maps/Drive let third party companies to sell paid services like speed cameras, traffic, etc on top of their software? Although, again, those companies wouldn't bother to develop for Maemo/Harmattan...
How about some community hacks to include speed cams as POIs in Drive? anybody has tried that?

I don't know about Sygic Mobile Maps 10 on the N900, but I can tell you one thing, Nokia Drive on either Symbian or MeeGo doesn't come anywhere near close to Sygic GPS!
I use Sygic alot and is the reason I couldn't resell my Nokia E7 as I knew I wouldn't be able to use it on the N9. The interface, features, and most importantly the routing is leagues ahead of Nokia Drive. I always hope one day Nokia will sort out the bad routing algorithm of their Drive application, although sadly even if they do I suppose we wouldn't see such an imporvement on our beloved N9's.

Speaking of bugs I can't get directions on nokia maps since pr 1.2. If i put an address in the right hand destination field it takes that as a search and just shows me where that is on the map. If I tap the left hand "my position" it also takes that as a search and shows me where that is on the map. I can't get the directions to work.

We already had the Drive update to 2.0 earlier than the Lumia folks. With PR1.2, Drive 2.0 was inclueded already with all the new options (only routes without highways, etc. and favorites included).

I think what the OP is talking about is the recently detailed drive 3.0 which looks a big step up from 2.0 with many new features including alternative routes etc.
The N9 will sadly not receive Drive 3.0 and it sounds as though we can only expect minor tweaks/bug fixes from what we have now.

But how much is Drive 3.0 different from 2.0? For all what we know it will be live traffic re-routing (however that's a feature I already loved on Symbian)

Can't remember where I saw it but there was a screenshot shown which offered 3 different route options before setting off, it's strange but after all this time neither Nokia Drive, nor Sygic offer this simple feature that has been included in dedicated sat navs for ages(I think even NDrive has this feature for a good couple of years, although I wasn't keen on NDrive when I trialed it, preferring Sygic, Symbian this is).

Actually, I just compared Drive on the N9 and the Lumia. Drive 2.0 on the Lumia still doesn't support any kind of favorite locations, let alone syncing with your Nokia account across Maps.
On MeeGo, Maps & Drive support favorite syncing, on WP, you have have now favorites in Maps, but not in Drive, and still you can't sync your favorites in Maps.
Also in WP, when you want to navigate to a contact's address, you have to enter it manually, there is no way to automatically open Drive from the People Hub's contact information. When you click there on a contact's address, Bing Maps is used.
On MeeGo, Nokia Maps is opened for his address and then when you choose to navigate to this address by car, it automatically opens Drive with a calculated route. This is still not possible in Windows Phone!

This is L800 with the very latest PR applied? (cant recall what it's called OTTOMH, think it might b called PR1.2 too)

Not the very latest PR... PR1.2 is essentially just another name Nokia is using now in India for Firmware 12070.
In these firmware updates, no apps are included, but third party apps (what the Nokia apps for WP essentially still are) are only updated over Marketplace.
Functions within the OS are not applied with the Firmware updates, but in OS updates (current build number 8107).

Damn. If only we had a bugtracker.... :(
The lack of ETA is already in the bug tracker. It was unfortunately merged in with a few other Drive feature requests and got marked as FIXED in PR1.2 but it was then pointed out that ETA wasn't included.
I think they're already aware of it. It's such a simple feature too. Why it got missed out is beyond me.

Can favourites places being imported from someone else? Maybe some patient and laborious TMO member has all speed cameras added as favourites places  and can be use to at least being seen while driving. Unfortunately, they would not offer the useful audio warning though, but better that than not knowing where they are.

Yeah, that is why it is maybe the time to encourage members to see if there is a chance to do some modding/hacking to the application. As PR1.3 might never come, or even if it does, it will not bring new features. I know is closed source but maybe there are some openness in certain parts of the UI where it can be edited or replaced with Symbian more updated versions? This was certainly possible with the Sygic mobile Maps 9/10 UI and new POIs from external sources could also be added. I am possibly writing BS here given my poor knowledge but if there is enough interest and the skills maybe something can be look into?

So you're saying that it's irrelevant what build of WP it's up to...
More important is that the app (in this instance Nokia Drive) is the latest version from the Marketplace?

Should add that one to your sig so folks know there's still one open that they can vote on & subscribe to.
Going on past track record though, they may try to say it's fixed yet again, or just set it as a WONTFIX.

No, not exactly. If Nokia wanted to integrate automatic opening of Nokia Drive from an address in the contacts application (People Hub), the OS has to be changed. These updates come from Microsoft and are different from the Firmware updates from Nokia for the Lumia.
With the Firmware updates from the phone vendor (which control only pretty low-level functions, as hardware control and so on) no direct features can be added to Windows Phone. The feature updates come from Microsoft. At least that's the way I understand it...

You'll get old quite fast waiting for the update considering N900's maps situation. It never got updated, it actually had features removed.

Hi all N9 Nokia Drive folks,
I just want to ask if anyone realise that the speed limit alert function of Nokia Drive in PR1.2 is only flashing on the screen instead of flashing on screen and a sound alert? My one only has red flashing and if you're driving and concentrate on the road, you wouldn't get it. Are all of yours are the same or my one is not working probably?
And if anyone has a clue how to extract the speed camera alert things from other Nokia symbian devices to N9? My old E71 got speed limit alert and speed camera sound alert whilst the newer N9 hasn't!!!

Mine is the same. To be honest Nokia Drive on the N9 is very basic when compared to Symbian(certainly the more recent releases anyway, my E7 Drive is far more feature rich!).
Personally I don't view the N9 as a particularly useful sat nav device, it can certainly get you by, but it's too basic for my needs(not to mention poor routing), is why I still keep my trusty old E7 with Sygic GPS.

I'm on PR1.2 (updated as soon as phone was out of box), and it has both the sound and on-screen alert for the speed limit.

So I guess my Drive application is not working properly, or it's missing data or something. Anyone know how to reinstall drive with a clean database, like the folder cities or something in storagecard?

Does anyone know if I can delete the whole "cities" folder in /home/user/mydocs. Then uninstall, and reinstall the Drive app by N9 QTweak would fix the problem?
Thanks

mine also makes alerting sound when past the speed limit...
I`d say do complete flash...
