Im using now windows xp and Im quite happy with it.

So I was just wondering, do I need to install Linux if I want to make programs for 770 with C++? Or does the compiling happen in 770 itself?

Yes, I'm afraid you need Linux to run the development SDK and to compile programs.

But there is a free vmware player (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ ) that you can use to run Linux (for example Ubuntu) inside a virtual machine.

Ok, thanks for the answer.

Yea, wmware sounds like a good option. The free edition looks like it has everything I need too :)

Does it allow you to create images? I thought the arrangement with the free version was all it could do was run an image created using a full licence?

Now that I read the site more closely, you are right.

But I can get evalution versions of the other wmwares for 30 days. I hope that time is enough for me to decide if I want to continue making programs for 770 :)

There are ready to use images on the site for download. You don't need the full version at all! http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/vm/

Brilliant, thanks for that. So now we can download a Ubuntu image and free vmplayer. Almost sounds too good to be true :D

It gets even better. Here's info on how to create new virtual machines:

The provided ubuntu build works ok, though you need to install a load of packges to be able to install maemo's dev environment - build_essentials is the package that has all you need.

I have the environment building as we speak.

reviving an old thread here-

i'm interested in starting development, but I am stuck on a windows machine. which vm build would people recommend? http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/cat/45

will this be reasonably easy to get setup for maemo and python?

thanks

I have just finished making a complete VMware appliance with the bora release and scratchbox integrated into it, based on Ubuntu. I will post the torrent url when I get it up.
