Wow, it's awesome - the first SDL game that runs at 30+ fps in 640x480 on the 770.

It's so full of WIN that it deserves its own thread.
You can get it here (http://pupnik.de/kobodl.html). I've added a .kobodlrc that increases speed a good 50%.
The game uses a unique sound engine that synthesizes all the music samples on startup, which takes about 4 minutes on the 770. I'm looking into ways to optimize this or cache the sample data.
Use arrow keys to move, ctrl key to fire. With the .kobodlrc you can steer and fire with the stylus for mega damage potential.

2007.05.25 New version of kobo deluxe
- fixes the application installer bug,
- installs into /usr/bin instead of /usr/games
- installs the proper .kobodlrc file into /home/user,
- can now exit game with esc button and dpad enter button
----
todo:
- menu
- speedier music generation (takes a couple of minutes)

Can I just say....
WOW!!!
Incredible! And I love the pointer control. Reminiscent of Time Pilot controls!
Fast, great graphics, great sound!
Thanx!

Love this game.
One thing, unless I'm missing it.
I know I can exit from the menu. But, if I'm in game, (esc) will ask to abort but I can't confirm. I have to die to get back to the menu.
No biggie tho, but if it's an easy keymap??
Thanx again,

From http://pupnik.de/kobodl.html
"Motion is with arrow keys - firing with stylus. Esc button exits and dpad-enter key (middle of dpad) confirms exit."

(edit) re: N800 builds - pretty much all these SDL games run fine on N800 - just install with dpkg -i. I'm sorry i haven't spent much time on packaging/installing, this is just a hobby you know.

That's the version I had, but I re-downloaded it again to be safe.
Still the same. I can exit the game from the menu, but I can't abort a game in progress.
I'll reboot to be safe.

Thanks for explaining! I totally missed this because i never stopped playing before dying! hehehe :) :) I fixxed it - uploading in a minute. (edit) ok uploaded - will playtest this afternoon a bit - seems to exit fine now.
Also now the *dpad center button no longer pauses the game*, which was hugely annoying.
Thanks again - and cheers - hopefully teh sound load thingy can be fixed soon.

runs great on my n810, bbooting from sd, rotation kernel... sound loads in 25 seconds or so. thanks
yep, that was a hiccup..!
The version out for the n900 (0.5.1-5maemo4) doesn't start from the icon but does from the shell... no clue why, it seems to run the same command but after a 10 sec loads it just quit.

It may take too long to acknowledge the inital DBus message. When started from command line, kobodeluxe does take a long time to load. The fix would be to set it up as an executable rather than a DBus service.

.service file was just placed in wrong place. I had also manually placed the file in correct path in my system so the error went unnoticed.

And where would that be? :)
for CLI use:
/usr/games/kobodl

Tried the latest version but it hangs on "Loading Sound Effects" forever.

Takes a long time - but well worth the wait. Have some patience and just let it do its thing.

Once optified, it could run with pre-rendered sounds.

Beautiful to see the fast sound load now!!!!!!!!
- entering name has problems / delete no work
- accelerometer control isnt good for advanced play
- "mouse" (stylus) play works better for dodging at medium level, but constant firing overheats cannon at higher levels
))) add a mode for "mouse" where stylus controls direction, and where spacebar is used to fire (((
you will find this is best play mode!
