View Full Version : First image themes! (Linux-inside and HHGTTG)

Hey y'all!

I've put together two sets of matching background and bootup images to better reflect the device than the Nokia logos and trademarks.

The first one is Linux inside - and it needs no explanation. It's using two rather cute images from the web. The bigger of these comes in two formats: background (for setting as personalized background), and regular (to be used to replace the Nokia Hands image). The smaller Linux inside image replaces the small NOKIA logo shown at startup.

The other theme is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Since we all know that an Internet Tablet IS a Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy). This one was largely made by me (with some graphics from the official HHGTTG site). They look ok, but if someone wants to make nicer ones - please do. My artistic skills are low.

The images we will be replacing are: The NOKIA logo that shows while the device is loading. It is located in:
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/qgn_indi_startup_nokia_logo.png , and the Connecting Hands image that shows when the device is almost finished booting, which is: /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/qgn_indi_nokia_hands.png.
There is also a specially cut background version of the linux-inside picture, which goes particularly well with Theme Nr. 1.
You can of course use the HHGTTG loading image as a background too, it will resize great automatically!

Now - how to set this up?

First - make sure you have rd mode enabled. It's needed to get root access.
Open up an X terminal (you have installed that package, haven't ya?)
To become root, type in this command: sudo gainroot
Backup the original images by doing:
cp /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/qgn_indi_startup_nokia_logo.png /media/mmc1/
And:
cp /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/qgn_indi_nokia_hands.png /media/mmc1/
download the images attached to this thread to your memory card
For the small image, do:
cp /media/mmc1/SMALL_IMAGE_NAME_HERE /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/qgn_indi_startup_nokia_logo.png
cp /media/mmc1/LOADING_IMAGE_NAME_HERE /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/qgn_indi_nokia_hands.png
Don't worry about some images being in jpg format and not png. The N770 will read them just fine!
To set the background, you need to copy the image from the Memory Card to your N770 by doing a Copy->Paste in your File browser. Then you just set it as a background by clicking on the home menu item.
You're all set!

Good luck, and post whatever artwork you create!

And of course, five minutes later, here is the update to the linuxinside_small.png image, it looked kind of funny with all those development images next to is, so I made it a bit larger to cover them.

Use the newest one.

Great hack. I'm not particular to any of these images myself but the first thing I thought when I first booted my 770 "hmm I wonder how I can replace that Nokia boot logo."

In this vein, I suggest other members submit properly formated (800x400) boot logos.

/me begins waiting

Hmmm. I like a lot.
I will have to watch this thread, after I change my images.. hehehe.
Thank you.

Ya

ziggamon: if you could put some comments in your message, it would also help people learn linux.

AND thanks for the effort. (Sorry to tur* before the praise.)

putkowski: what do you mean some comments?

I thought I explained things pretty well. If something is unclear, I'll be glad to help. And I'm sure there's plenty of others here that can help out too!

Robette: Yeah, I'm not an artist, and I don't claim to be, as I wrote. So please - if somebodyu has an artistic vein: submit some cute artwork!

I find, that an special area for wallpapers and images should be arranged. Maybe somewhere at the Screenshotsarea.
I contribute two Osx Backgrounds.
In my opinion the best at Mac :D .

Glad to hear so many people like it, and that there are other things incoming (thx, niko)!

If anyone figures out how to change the very first NOKIA logo with the little development icon that is shown for a second or so, please post it here too!

I have never seen this image.
Maybe it only appears at a developer edition?

niko: if you have rd-mode enabled, it shows up during bootup.

Okay, my turn.

Both of these startup screens are actual screen caps of the Hildon GUI, with the central area mocked up with a graphic editor.

The first (and longest on display) has an utilitarian role : it shows a plea with the owner's name, phone number(s) and email, so that (s)he stands a chance in a million (instead of zero) of recovering the 770 in case of loss/theft etc.
Obviously this is just a template and you will have to fill in your personal data using your favourite graphics editor (irfanview, photoshop, the Gimp or Paint :-).
http://www.monbo.net/770/en/qgn_indi_startup_nokia_logo.png

The second can be used as is, it associates Maemo and the "Linux in use" logo of recent Knoppix releases. I find it doubly relevant, as Knoppix allowed me to flash my 770 in RD-mode from my XP box :-)

Enjoy,

i love the osx backgrounds. right now im rendering a movie for my 770 but when its done ill photoshop the boot images i selected and get them up.

good idea for the "if lost..." background. the next logical progression is to configure an app to "phone home" when it goes online. anyone know where to start for a project like this?

Make a runlevel script that bg's itself and polls a webserver periodically. Use PHP on the webserver to save and analyze location logs. I may give this a whirl if no-one else volounteers :)

I was thinking 800x480 desktops only.

These are hosted on image shack so I don't know how long they'll last. Get 'em while they're hot. If the links are down pm me your email and I'll send them.

I'm gonna feel a little bad if someone beats me to my favorite backgrounds, since I'm still waiting for my darling. But check out the wallpapers at www.2advanced.com. It's not a 770 friendly site (hehe...), but it's down near the bottom at "desktops".

"Neurontransmitter" is nice, so is "probe3 01". Lot's of others too.

I am looking forward for theme modding and custom icons. I browsed a littel around at the filesystem but unless we have a relase lasting for more than a month I will not change to much in the filesystem.

The icons are all in the same folder as the images we're replacing.
Someone should make a small shell script to install this kind of themes... Anybody up for it? I'd do it, but programming in shell just drives me crazy!

You should check out this topic (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=233&highlight=theme). I posted some info about creating a custom theme there.

I had some spare time last night, so I worked on my rendition of everyon'e favorite penguin.

I put together 2 boot logos (replacements for the "booting nokia logo" and the "hands"). I also made a desktop to go with it.

here they are:

boot (http://www.oafbot.com/thumbnails/downloads/large/qgn_indi_startup_nokia_logo.png)

boot-2 (http://www.oafbot.com/thumbnails/downloads/large/qgn_indi_nokia_hands.png)

desktop (http://www.oafbot.com/thumbnails/downloads/large/tux_desktop.png)

maybe, I'll work on some themes eventually...

Looks great! Did you draw them yourself?
Btw, why are you using the "Soviet Union" font on the desktop background?

Yes I did draw them myself. But I did look at other examples of Tux on the web as reference, since I never drew him before. :)

The Font on the desktop's called Gagarin. I've used it on one other project in the past (the project being on none other than yuri gagarin). Don't really have a good reason for using it on this little project other than it looks cool and sufficiently techie. I tried other fonts too, but this one went together the best with the hildon look.

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the NOKIA logo which is shown within the first few seconds before qgn_indi_startup_nokia_logo.png?

My guess is that this is hard coded into the ROM, and would need to be changed by recompiling the image after hacking it to insert a different boot graphic.

I hope I am being clear here.

I have successfully altered the "startup" and "hands" .pngs, but still when I boot up the device the first few seconds it displays the NOKIA logo before switching to my altered graphics files.

I do not have R&D mode enabled, so that is not the reason.

Anybody been able to change this?

It's not really important to me, but I would like to be able to change it if it is trivial to do so.

konttori
12-08-2006, 08:09 AM
My guess is also that it's hardcoded. But I'm interested in this as well.

Also, would you like to have the hands logo as part of the theme maker package?

jayholler
12-08-2006, 10:20 AM
yeah, that would be great!

also, it seems like using the theme.xml file and custom-made graphics one could rearrage the user interface to some degree (ie. making the taskbar/app launcher on the left smaller), right?

Anyone working on something like this? if not, I just may do it myself.

konttori
12-09-2006, 09:51 AM
From what I've undestood, you cannot change the size of the left panel, but OTOH, I haven't looked at 2006 xml that thoroughly really, so can't be sure. It would be great if you could check that.
