I am very impressed with xfce on the n800, I am still tweaking some stuff, I have only spent a small amount of time working on this.
It will be available shortly, days/weeks not hours

Thoughts, comments, wishlist?
Anyone internested in providing any input, now is the time
I compiled all of XFCE, all of it compiled without incident. Terminal works, but the enter key does not work on the virtual keyboard, it only brings up the thumb-keyboard, when that is disabled nothing happens. Aterm and Xterm from my openbox tar work fine though. Thunar is also working nicely.
Anyone interested in helping, please feel free to PM me. I would like to find a couple of 770 owners who have used openbox or KDE that would like to test this out prior to release. I would like this to support 770/800 out of the gate.
I really like this, but still have some tweaking to do..

Looks nice, but until that enter-key on the keyboard bug is squashed, I wouldn't want to start playing with it just yet.
But I do have a 2GB SD card just waiting for it though.
I'll test it on 770, too.

The enter key problem, is only for a specific program "Terminal" that comes with XFCE, if I can not easily fix this, I will remove it. You still would have xterm and aterm, so you would not be missing anything.

Oh, in that case to hell with "Terminal" and PM me a link to the tarball and some installation instructions and I'll slap it on one of my 2GB micro-SD-to-SD-adapter cards.
I like the idea of running an operating system off a chip no bigger than a fingernail.

I was going to release my compiled XFCE tonight... *snaps* Damnit, I think you've got me beat, though... *cough* I think I busted my install with the damned thing... Heheh...
So, what I'm saying... I'm a 770 owner and I'll take a swing at it if this next install I try rips it like this again... ^^'''
I'll host the tarball, too :)

It's enough to make you cry, it looks so pretty, but plays for about 3 seconds before the cpu can no longer keep up.

Its comming along nicely, although I really wish I had been able to get xmms running well. :(
The XFCE will contain much of what was in openbox plus some additions
grep
tar
bzip2
ping
telnet
fdisk
parted
which
hdparm
links
xkbd & matchbox-keyboard
ftp
gftp and gftp-text
gaim
xterm
aterm
xkill
xdaliclock (can do fullscreen clock :-)
esd
lots of wmapps, works with wmdock, but I have a problem with wmdock, it swallows the keyboard, I have contacted the developer and he said he was happy I reported it and is working to fix it, we'll see if its fixed before I am ready to start doling out XFCE
Would like to have working before release:
Any ideas of a small fast music player (with NO kde or tons of gnome deps)
Browser, I have compiled Dillo, but links works better, I have been unable to get a good browser app working. Is minimo still available to n800 or only microb? Anyone have ideas how to make the opera browser work in another window manager?
Abiword /Gnumeric Not sure if I should do these or not. ???
Any other suggestions/wishlist for apps?

I know perhaps it seems like I am talking to myself out here, oh well
I have found a music player that seems to work fairly good on IT, you can also still use other fullscreen players with XFCE. Actually its kinda nice because you can have say, kagu or osso-player in fullscreen and still have more desktops to work on, just switch to that desktop when you need it. The CPU on XMMS was 100% and would play for about 3 seconds, this is using about 10-15%cpu
Did I mention anywhere about the app finder in XFCE, when you run it, it will find all the apps installed in hildon, and xfce, you can then launch them from the app finder

Is that like my sister from another mister?
Looks interesting. When do we get first beta release of XFCE? Hope we get Microb or Opera running on XFCE otherwise it is useless.
Penguinbait! That genius of yours at work again, I see... :)
Amazing job so far... XMMS O_O

I vote for Minimo.
Or you could go the extra mile and go with Webkit.

Additions
REALVNC 4.1.2 viewer and server (menu items to start vncviewer and start/stop vncserver) Note vncserver script does not work, but the vncserver does. /usr/local/bin/x0vncserver (Oh and did I mention you can set a password on the server, very nice)
xrdp (this is pretty cool) xrdp allows you to connect to vnc sessions via standard windows terminal services client, and perhaps more, I am still playing and there is not much documentation. I still need to make startup scripts to start xrdp, but I have tested it and it works
So basically you can connect to IT from another computer with Terminal services client, pretty cool.
wmdock for XFCE, was updated by the developer to fix the bug where it was swallowing the xkbd and matchbox keyboards. I sent him the problem, it was fixed the next day, itwas awesome, Thanks André Ellguth
nmap added
Added some additional menu
more to come, I do not have a tarball ready to share, its close, but I need to put some scripts together. I am going camping this weekend thouth, so it my be next weekend before I have a tarball ready.

Slap the usual wi-fi applications on there of course (sniffers, aircrack, etc.).
And some decent BT apps as well. ;)
Penguin, you need to talk to Nokia or the guys at Maemo.
This is some amazing stuff you are doing and you need to get their attention. If you want, I will try to get your KDE and XFCE on maemo apps. Nokia should send you (at little or no cost) some kind of compensation like they do for other developers... And I bet they would. Amazing work, please continue...
A tarball would be nice ;) I'll always have hosting for your projects, so long as they're always this awesome!

I think a lot of us are waiting for that tarball; a new GUI is something that will make the 770 and the 800 a lot more interesting for the technical users.

Its working very well, but I have been slowly adding functionality, menus, fixes. Its very close, could release a BETA but I really want to have only one release. I have spent a lot of time trying to setup direct boot of xfce and it does work, but something is still wrong, I am missing some startup scripts, my music won't play if I boot directly to xfce, but it all works fine when switching to and from hildon.
Additions,
epdf (pdf viewer)
sylpheed (email app, menus for setup are somewhat difficult to negoitiate but it works well)
mousepad (editor)
xdesktopwaves (toys/eyecandy)
explosions (toys/eyecandy)
xpenguins (toys/eyecandy)
root xterm menu entry (just handy sometimes)
osso calculator menu entry
hildon keyboard start/stop entries
added volume control to WMdock (Mixer)
Menu entries, I made menu entries for four apps, that will not come with the tarball, mh-shot-tool, minimo and streamtuner, and FM radio
Known problems, Minimo does not work with xkbd or my matchbox keyboard, well let me clarify, it works, but the enter key does not, so you can type in a web address, but there is no longer a "go" button and enter does not work. You can either enable the hildon keyboard from the menu or use mine and search google to hit web addresses? Anyone have any ideas, let me know.
xfce4-appfinder is no longer working, I am not sure why, working on fixing is issue. It is a very usefull app, and was working, I broke it somehow?
Something will be comming soon, sorry to keep saying that, but it will be soon.

I followed the instructions on http://geekpenguin.blogspot.com/2007/09/xfce-on-it_12.html until step 7. For step 8, I restarted and booted to MMC. I was going to type 'sudo gainroot' but when I tapped on the screen, no keyboard showed up. The tablet is able to register clicks (to load xterm and everything else) but it doesn't bring up a keyboard. Even clicking the center button (to bring up the fullscreen keybaord) had no result.
Has anyone experienced something similar or know what could be the issue? Thank you in advance.
(btw, I'm running OS2008 version 2.2007.51-3)

Well, there is a onscreen keyboard but you have to start it. I am not sure if this will work since this was compiled for 2007OS and I have not tested in in 2008OS. There are several changes in 2008OS that could mess up XFCE running on 2008OS. KDE is much more mature and working pretty good, although not quite as fast as XFCE, but very useable.

Penguibait,
Would you mind updating your window-maker for N800 (OS2008)? I'd much rather use wm than kde.
Thanks,
Jaime

Maybe look at ICEWM
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15956&highlight=ICEWM
But there is no onscreen keyboard for n800
I might redo window maker, we'll see.
I still owe KDE a updated deb, but lifes been keeping me busy. I would like to do some more work on ICEWM also. Might do some more work with afterstep too. Who knows?
