To learn basic programming concepts I would recommend Python. It's easy to get started with and you don't have to care about the nitty gritty details. I can wholeheartedly recommend the free book...

I don't think you should expect Meego on N900, and I don't think it matters much. What matters is that it will be pretty easy to write apps that work on both Maemo 5 and Meego.
