Happened to me once. The way I fixed it was plugging the N900 in my PC (windows 7) and when I got a pop up asking me whether to scan and fix the problems I did so and everything worked fine...

Different systems could handle a corrupt card differently.

If corruption is not the problem, then try searching bugs.maemo.org for similar problems.

Run a file system check on the card using a windows machine. It's probably corrupted.

sudo gainroot
umount /media/mmc1
fsck.vfat -a /dev/mmcblk1p1
on the device.

If you pocket case has a magnetic clamps you may have a problem because KBD sensor is magnetic.
