It's not related to TV out at all, the N900 suffers badly from tearing (scroll the home screen slowly and you'll see horizontal bands where 2 frames are intermixed and various other jittery...

Any chance you launched it from a root shell (as root) rather than as user?

That would give a very chromey (unthemed) feel to the style (rather than whatever style you were expecting).

You found them only because you used apt-get from command line. When you normally install applications via Application Manager the .deb file is deleted immediately after it's installed.
