What i do is:

Unrar on pc.

Put the files on N900 (my docs for example).

With filebox copy the files and paste on home/opt/qtlockscreen (except fonts).

If have special fonts i copy on...

first unrar it. copy the .ini file in home/opt/qtlockscreen and the rest in that respective folder name in home/opt/qtlockscreen.

No problem at all.
Yes, you can copy the backup file to the PC and after that back to the phone, you will be able to restore the backup.
Flashing helps if you want a new start with the phone, or if...

21.2011.38-1 = PR 1.3.1 which includes a security update (Diginotar)
I guess your current one is 20.2010.36-2 = PR 1.3

003 is just a regional code.
Flashing wipes all your data and reinstalls...

Those are the latest versions of the Maemo 5 OS.
The last one got released about a week ago. Do you plan to flash your phone, or just do a update?

If you'll update from PR 1.3 to PR 1.3.1, none of your data will be deleted.
Anyway, do a backup from the menu (Backup), if you have a Micro SD card you don't have to move it to a computer,...

just go to back up and create a new backup file on your micro sd card.you should have the option to back up communications and stuff.

also some applications in order to be run with maemo graphics (instead of like on your pc) must be run with run-standalone.sh

i.e. run-standalone.sh anyQTapp

finally there are the python apps...

the .desktop files are in
/usr/share/applications/hildon/
ls /usr/share/applications/hildon/
lists what is there. you can use grep to try to find something specific, for example
ls...

Programs reside under various areas and usually is controlled by the package manager which is probably equivalent to windows' add/remove programs.

The default package manager for maemo 5...

Check the contents of the shortcut files, they got .desktop extensions, i forgot where they are located, but should be easy to find on the forum or the wiki.

There isn't one single answer, for each program you need to find what the executable file is called and where it is located (this second part is not always necessary, some executables are placed in...
