If you use the default mediaplayer, use the volume slider in there and not the volume buttons. this way you can get the volume a bit lower before it goes off.

Connect the N900 to your desktop machine in mass storage mode and then try to delete the folders. I don't know your OS, but you probably have to go into the folder properties at first and disable...
