I managed to reproduce it by stopping ntpd, setting the clock forward with "date -s" (rotation still working fine) and then back again. I guess running ntpd avoids the issue by ensuring the clock...

sysinfo-tool -g /certs/npc/esn/gsm

You can also substitute "wlan_id" or "bt_id" for "gsm" to get the WiFi or Bluetooth MAC address without long pipelines.
