If you're using the swype keyboard, you can swipe the swype (:p) key from left to right and the directional arrows and other functions will appear.

Another alternative is to tap down on the text...

Actually, you're supposed to enable the Nokia virtual keyboard in settings and this should bring up the FastSMS keyboard. Once you click on a blank spot, it will take a while to load the FastSMS...
