Google has lots of hits wrt this problem. Apparently -idx option is needed. I guess you can try adding this option in ~/.mplayer/config file (probably just idx)

Btw just recently I announced (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1202287&postcount=15) an update to mplayer. It should also perform better.

Maybe a python guru may help you. In C the function to call is MeeGo::QmDisplayState::setBlankingPause(). A simple script that you start in the background might do the job.

Okay so this is related to the file dialog then. I just ran valgrind in scratchbox and indeed got lots of errors at when opening the file dialog.

KMPlayer doesn't do any converting, nor does it copy files.
My guess is that something was downloading Prat+TIO.exe, using /var/tmp/ as temporary location. E.g. media player/tracker still hammering...
