Well if cost is your concern, then hacking is not the real solution, go for these network "TATA DOCOMO" or "VODAFONE" for cheap internet (2G or 2.5G) and for 3G Internet go for "IDEA" instead.

Well somewhat true, people look at my phone take in hand and say.. "Heavy hai.. camera kitne ka hai.. 3G/wifi hai.. memory kitna hai.." and all I say in my mind "WTF are they asking" didn't dey hear...

Is this the first time u faced such an issue, well its kinda common, but then the lesson u learnt is to quit the N900, well once's own perspective, But for others we have a lesson here, N900 is not...

Install Conky, which is aslike Task Manager on WIndows, which shows Processes running and CPU usage, install Conky and upload few screenshots of it, whn u feel the N900 is overheating..
