Being in a foreign country it would be useful and cheaper to send text messages to contacts using Skype. (Tried to add this to the brainstorm, but got stuck somehow)

maybe this is a dumb question to ask, but did you check if the led is activated for emails? Settings > Notification light (maybe translation is not exact)
