Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

Funny that this old thread of mine should pop up today... I have been working on this goal all weekend, and have finally made some progress.

Not on the N900, unfortunately: we never got anywhere...

Re: Samsung Galaxy Note

Of course there is.

Depends if the horizon is on Mercury or Jupiter, though :-)

Re: Looking for a N810

I have one in good state, although it hasn't been used in quite a while.
In Paris, FR. Keyboad is AZERTY, though.

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

Done that, thanks for reminding me, Estel.

Otherwise I'm afraid my prediction has come true, as we've been beaten to the goal by the Android juggernaut.

For quite a few months now (ever since...

Re: Engadget: Nokia sells Qt licensing and services to Digia

Huh huh... "quickly" remains to be seen, perhaps :-)

But if they really do bring Qt to Android (preferably along with PyQt or PySide), allowing people to create useful apps like we did on Maemo......

Re: Samsung Galaxy Note

Indeed :-)

Maybe I already mentioned this before, but Jota Text Editor is a great (and free) companion app for TIDE...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

@Estel: I will top that, I'm 100% sure it will work :-)

@ineo : your use case is what I've been wanting to do all along (except that I'd hesitate between an E17 and the iBasso D-Zero, but that's...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

Thanks for correcting my misunderstanding.

I don't think I'd be up to analysing and hacking C or C++ systems code though... just wouldn't know where to start :-)

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

I will try it of course, but what a really strange command line !

Are those separators really exclamation marks ? :-)

I also have my doubts about the "audioconvert ! audioresample" parts on...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

My modest goal would be to achieve decent battery life if we ever get this to work, given that h-e-n will already be gobbling down a good deal of juice :-)

I believe you, but I can't help thinking...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

Status report on my call(s) for help... :-)

No sign of life on the Rockbox thread. Seems abandoned for good :-(

However, some people seem to follow Planet Maemo still.
Over the weekend I wrote...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

You are very right, the sad truth of the story is that there is nothing new at all here.

Ten years ago, the iRiver H1x0 had an optical spdif out (which could even be hacked into coax), and...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

Thanks for your continued efforts Oblomow ! Maemo certainly doesn't make this stuff easy for us, compared to standard desktop Linux...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

Ah, OK, some same method as previously, only with different hardware.

I guess streaming sound as PCM through USB (in or out) is the same for any client device that has the capability, and power...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

Aha, at last something I understand :-)
Yes, I used osso-xterm, but with CSSU (stable) installed, so the bug should be fixed and I must remove the work-around from n900_keymap... will give it a go...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

Could you please elaborate on that last sentence (in bold) ?
What software did you use to play the music ? Do you mean that no fiddling with ALSA and/or PA was needed ?...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

Have you given it a quick try ? If it behaves like an USB sound card then it *is* an USB DAC and should work for plain sound output, even if it lacks drivers for the other functions (like video and...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

Yes, the keys are like F6/F7 or similar.
The problem might be that MOC runs in the console, and xterm itself handles the volume keys as zoom in/zoom out, so I don't know if if a console app would...

Re: WIP: USB audio output - N900 as an "audiophile" portable music player

Thanks Estel.

About the N900 as a recorder : yes, that would be another great use case for the USB-audio hack. This is exactly what motivated Oblomow's experiments which got the ball rolling...
