Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

In the US, the N900 was $650 USD upon release during a time when subsidized pricing was still ongoing. To many, it was high, but having an unlocked phone at that period of time was short-term an...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

No. Actuallly, most of todays "flagships" cost more SIM free. Which is riduculous.
The most expensive phone for me was P800. But at the time that phone was something, it was unique and packed with...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

That's it, juice, you've nailed it!

I realized a long time ago from following this thread that what we want is basically... a netbook. Perhaps a smaller one so it can be called handheld to fit the...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

It doesn't have to be.

But if anybody could do it, why not Nokia? I do not anticipate a device from: Apple, HTC, LG, Sony or much of any other reputable device manufacturer. And I'm sorry, but...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

2016 is dwindling to closure and the verdict seems to be same as previous years;
The best handheld gnu/linux machine is still N900.

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

Raspberry Pi devices and other single board computers can be bought and made into very functional devices. People will 3D print cases, attach displays, controller buttons and attach batteries....

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

The very thing that allowed portable devices to get small is that they are not modular. Hard to get around that.

I absolutely share your opinion on Sailfish and Jolla.

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

Well, speaking of going retro, this is my latest project for a hand held computer. Haven't quite figured out how to port maemo to it but the battery life is terrific!

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

Sure. That is what the Neo900 is about. See how far that has got.

Because that is the very nature of FOSS as such. There is no "Linux", there are hundreds of small "distributions". There is no...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

But why do this instead of just ordering a Pyra? I think it actually will ship in a few months. Why fragment our already lamentably small community into numerous sub projects, no one of which...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

Thanks for reminding me.

This is still at the top of my list,
just waiting for a (RESISTIVE!!!) touch-screen HDMI display
to mate with one of the many SBC's I get specs for every month.

No...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

The Gole looks very interesting, they just need to be asked
if it is compatible with a linux distro (for those of us who care).

These are entirely possible,
but the devil is in the amount of...

Re: Time for a new phone?

Agreed, the HW of the device is pretty neat.
But you need to consider that HW is only part of the story, it is the combination of HW+SW that makes the device useful at all.

Which brings me to......

Re: Samsung Galaxy Note

90% of Galaxy NOTE's have "bad" emmc [hardware] states (incl. S2 and US Galaxy variants).

ALL Samsung ICS kernels (for N7000/i9220) including official and leaks have the emmc (superbrick) bug.

Re: Fixing USB port, before and after it is to late. (All info in one Thread) (See POST #1)

Your port is not attached on all pins you MUST solder it down before you have a fully detached port.

Once done your problem will not be there no more.
