rmmod cifs as root should do the trick of unloading.
to permanently enable the module, do
echo "cifs" >> /etc/modules
this will trigger automatic loading of the cifs module at bootup.

I had the exact same problem, try starting it in R&D mode then shutting it down and starting it up normally, there are threads on how to do this.
