Did you try booting into R&D mode?

I'm not sure but I think this is the Hardware Synchronisation of Hildon-Desktop. If I read it right in the MeaModder forum, then this does not increase the speed. It does cause crashes and reboot...

I also noticed some slow downs. Just to give an example: after the last update my phone was suddenly really fast. But that only lasted for two days. After that period I am restarting my n900 everyday...

I use the short press action of the camera button to enable rotation. It can be found within the menu of shortcutd.
