If anyone is still interested in this, I made an Android app that can send anything over Android Beam (Jelly Bean / 4.1+ only).
Just tap the share button and select Beam File....

This is not an issue, it's a known shortcoming of Meego Harmattan that the stock document viewer can't open password-protected PDF files. I suggest installing something like NSR Reader if you want to...

I added a profilematic action - activate PSM when idle for 10+ mins. Makes it run for 2 days straight as a proper smartphone with medium usage.

NFC itself can't. S Beam, Android Beam, and the N9 only use NFC to do a "handshake", the files are then transferred using either Bluetooth or WiFi direct.

S Beam seems like a simple protocol...

Android Beam was introduced in Jelly Bean. That's why Samsung made S Beam, and why the person mentioned (GNex vs S3) failed to transfer stuff.
