The Icons has been done with Dr. Launch
But maybe the possibility of just rotating the widgets and icons when the phone is in portrait mode.
Then the taskbar can either stay in its Landscape...

I have been chatting with Lehto and he apparently runs his at 1100Mhz fixed and noticed that it is much smoother than ever before. (as it doesn't need to scale back down to 250 or 500 speed etc)

Then you should try to learn more about the device. I for once will probably not change to MeeGo.. Not to start with anyway. Maemo is a very powerful OS if you know how to use it.

You could reinstall all applications to restore the .desktop files.
List all .desktop files you have by (open terminal using CTRL+SHIFT+X)
cat /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.list | grep "*.desktop"
then...
