Re: Sad news; Nokia apparently killed Meltemi

Qt will survive as long as KDE has a significant user base. Nokia will survive as either a division or puppet of M$. But RIM is already toast, another Palm.

Re: The Epic Android Thread

Although better, the openess of Maemo is also questionable. That is, in both cases they are open except for some parts that aren't.

For now at least, Android is the 'most open' mobile OS I can...

Re: The Epic Android Thread

Not counting tablets, to me the top Android units available or about to be released and key differences are (in no particular order):

1. Nexus - Vanilla ICS 4.0 but no removable storage.

Re: Meltemi - Lightweight Linux based os from Nokia

I would like to take this discussion of mobile and static systems farther but this is getting pretty far off topic for this thread. Probably more appropiate to continue here......

Re: Meltemi - Lightweight Linux based os from Nokia

You're ignoring key differences in how MS desktop and mobile products have been marketed (both in the past and present) and how they will be marketed in the future.

Til now, they have been...

Re: Meltemi - Lightweight Linux based os from Nokia

The game will change radically after Win8 is released and MS uses literally billions of desktops as leverage into the mobile arena.

Re: Meltemi - Lightweight Linux based os from Nokia

Doesn't matter, still way too early in the mobile battle. MS has more cards to play, a good long-range strategy and LOTSA money to spend. They are determined, well financed bulldogs. It will be at...

Re: Meltemi - Lightweight Linux based os from Nokia

Personally, I have no real interest in another closed OS controlled by Nokia, Elop and MS. They will never allow any Linux OS they control to be capable enough to threaten WinPhone.

Give me real,...

Re: Windows 8 & WinPhone - how to counterstrike?

The desktop already is and will continue to be a place for 'apps'. Most people install lotsa apps on their computers, just not from 'app stores' like they do their mobile devices. That's gonna...

Re: Windows 8 & WinPhone - how to counterstrike?

Metro UI can be turned off, reverting to what is basically a Win7 UI unless you open a Metro app. Metro apps always run in the Metro UI. At least that's my understanding.

Of course they want...

Re: HP says bye bye to WEebOS hardware

Unfortunately, even though it practically eliminates a direct competitor, it's probably bad. May scare off potential MeeGo investors because it demonstrates how tough and what a serious an...

Re: Google buying Motorola - now will MS buy Nokia?

It's like when the team owner makes a 'statement of confidence' in his General Manager or coach. The GM or coach knows then he's toast.

Re: Google buying Motorola - now will MS buy Nokia?

It'll be interesting to see if Intel makes a play not to actually buy it so much as to force M$ to, to put the wood to M$ financially. M$ has much to lose if Nokia is bought but far less to gain for...

Re: Google buying Motorola - now will MS buy Nokia?

It's not that buying Nokia solves MS probems in the mobile arena. It's that buying Nokia prevents bigger problems. A kinda defensive/offensive move, depending on which way you look at it. Bottom...

Re: Google buying Motorola - now will MS buy Nokia?

Google did NOT give their Android partners the finger. They gave them a big umbrella to protect them from storm of patent lawsuits and fees. The deal only strengthens Android's overall position. ...

Re: Google buying Motorola - now will MS buy Nokia?

Other than the impact to employees and their families, no I don't - except that all these mergers, acquisitions, partnerships and patent wars will ultimately determine what devices I will have to...

Re: Google buying Motorola - now will MS buy Nokia?

@oweng: I wouldn't have started this thread if I didn't believe a M$ buyout was a real possibility. Now I think it's more likely than not.

@Daneel: That happened a long time ago, at least in the...

Re: The End is Coming: What do we do next?

I reluctantly went back to Android for daily use long ago, but still find hanging out here like no place else. Still whip out the N900 now and then to try new stuff.

But as with all tech devices...

Re: Google buying Motorola - now will MS buy Nokia?

I suggested back in post #22 maybe Intel could buy Nokia to make MeeGo devices. Probably would be a good move despite the price to put the Intel/Nokia/MeeGo plan back in action. Both companies are...

Re: Google buying Motorola - now will MS buy Nokia?

Good point made there that in no way could MS allow anyone else to buy Nokia. That just can't happen. And M$ has the resources to make sure it doesn't.

But...wouldn't it be great to see Intel...

Re: Google buying Motorola - now will MS buy Nokia?

I still think Google sees all the money Apple, Samsung, etc. is making on hardware and would like a piece of that pie. Increased control over Android is part of it. But no doubt patents and the...

Re: Google buying Motorola - now will MS buy Nokia?

+1

On the patent side, there's another possibility. Instead of charging for the patents they own, Google could strengthen Android's market position even further by offering free usage rights to...

Google buying Motorola - now will MS buy Nokia?

Just curious if you think the Google/Motorola deal will put pressure on Microsoft to actually buy Nokia instead of just controlling it.
