Re: Manually mounting usb HDD

Make sure both the mount point and device exist first. Run "ls /dev/sda1 /media/usb" in a terminal if you're unsure.

Re: Location for storing data: /home/user/appname?

I think "/home/username/.appname" is common for user-specific app settings and files on Linux systems. Note the period. It makes it a hidden folder, so it won't take up space in regular directory...

Re: Uses for an N800

Photo frame? The N800's big, high-res screen makes it an excellent photo viewer. And it's more portable than your netbook.

Re: Why is my mmc2 card REAdONLY?

I thought the N800 ignored the write-protect switch?

Re: Shell missing od command?

A regular Linux system will use Bash for the shell, and the GNU coreutils package provides most of the common utilities (including od). The tablets use the lightweight BusyBox instead of a typical...

Re: Charger Noises

I just put my ear to my N800 charger.

Without the N800 plugged in, it whines. With the N800 plugged in and charging, it rhythmically chirps. It's only audible within a foot, though.

Re: Memory card speed test

The normal user should have write permission to the memory cards, I didn't have to run the command as root. Are you using a filesystem on the memory cards other than the typical FAT? What's "mount"...

Re: My prediction: Nokia Internet Tablet will falter in 2009 and beyond

That's like saying a Windows application should run on Linux, since Linux runs on x86 CPUs.

Re: extending wifi range?

Make a parabolic reflector out of aluminum foil. Aim it at the router and place the N800 at the parabola's focus.

Re: My prediction: Nokia Internet Tablet will falter in 2009 and beyond

I prefer the tablet didn't become fully mainstream. Truly mainstream products are usually watered-down/crippled/etc., like the iPod Touch you mentioned.

As long as I have a tablet, I'd prefer...

Re: DVD+R double layer, 8.5 G, 8X, $34.99 shipped

Re: Freeing up space

Run "du -hs /var/cache/apt/archives". That's how much space "apt-get clean" will clear up. "autoclean" is a less enthusiastic cleaner.

Re: Media Player with slow and repeat functions

Mplayer can do it from a terminal.

For example: "mplayer -speed 0.5 -ss 60 -endpos 15 -loop 5 video.avi" will seek to 60sec, play at half speed for 15sec, and then repeat 5 times.

Re: How to find files?

The tablets use busybox for the shell and utilities, which are more limited than the usual. "-iname" seems to not be supported, try "-name".

Ugh. Then I'll worry about STDs every time I use my N800.

Re: Acronis True Image - backup Maemo in Windows -- $4.99 NewEgg

I can't think of a reason to be paranoid about automount in that situation, but there are smarter people out there ;)

Re: Acronis True Image - backup Maemo in Windows -- $4.99 NewEgg

Many filesystems (like ext2) can get corrupted if there's a power outage or the drive is removed suddenly, etc. Other filesystems, like ext3, are more robust.

Re: slow video performance

Mplayer has the option to decode videos at reduced resolution, which enables the direct playback of typical AVI files (i.e. 704x396 DivX video @ ~1Mbps and MP3 audio @ 128kbps).

"-lavdopts...

Re: mplayer: aspect ratio or zoom for the N8x0, -vo nokia770

The "aspect" setting overrides the aspect ratio of the video file. Setting it to 15:9 will stretch videos to completely fill the screen, but they'll be distorted.

A video shouldn't have black...

Re: Internal/external memory

Delete the sample audio and video files, and the pdf manuals for languages you don't need. Then the system 256MB of flash will seem bigger.

Re: Need help in installing WiFi

Your PC's IP address is 192.168.1.100 when connecting via the router? That sounds right.

The router get a single, public IP address from your ISP (i.e. 123.xxx.yyy.zzz). The simplest way to see...

Re: Reflashing with Linux questions, font size question

Are you running 32bit (x86) Ubuntu on your 64bit hardware? Try running "uname -a" in a terminal. My 64bit Linux PC has "x86_64" in the output.
