I suggested this before (https://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1507487#post1507487) but it seemed to fall on deaf ears. We'd just need to implement the part the app that generates the unique ID...

I think if you read the blog post I linked above you will find the intent is more than stopping development. They in fact write you will not be able to use Whatsapp on those devices.
