That may be the real power for some, but I think the vast majority of people will want to first do what they can currently do under maemo.

Or at least understand what maemo things are available...

The real power of Mer is having the whole Ubuntu repository available to you. If you enable Red-Pill mode and Show All Applications, you will see what that means. But it slows down the Application...
