Re: Excessive trolling on TMO

No.
your question is valid.
There is the forum, the wiki, the "garage", the "wayback machine" and google as search options

if you think the n900 subforums are vast and deep and hard to gather the info from ..
The n8x0 subforums are even deeper...with more in them...

But you struck on the meat of an issue that has been a focus of my continued project, how to sift the wheat from the chaff of the threads in this place to get the exact information one needs.
As you have said Maemish, there is a lot of posts stretched across this forum, with "mentions", "meanderings", "tidbits" and references, and amalgamating them into an easy to reference format that doesn't include 50 "tabs" in one's browser open to do it...the real big issue.

Ariadeno, will your concern be bettered by the usual suspects, including myself, by promising improvement to keep Off-Topic in Off-Topic or do you have concrete measures in mind to discuss?

Since i am here i look at what Mods do and try to get a feeling based on what they criticize.

Re: Excessive trolling on TMO

instead of attempting to dictate methods of control over others, their natural behaviour, the methods of interaction in this forum.
Which will result in either some adhering to an agenda that is specifically tailored, or most adhering for a time to it, or an all out rebellion...

If the mandate is to "self censor posts"
and make sure non pertinent dialogue in a post is omitted,
I have no problem doing that,
Since virtually every post I have ever done has some element however small of superfluous content....regardless of the bulk of questions found, answered, or solutions to issues...
I don't mind adhering to implemented Draconian edicts and be rigorously and attentively compliant by doing a complete "fire sale" on every post I have done that contains non-relevant information.
which...would be a 99% burn.

Either the complaint is about "off topic" posts ..
Or the complaint threatens to go into a very very grey area....
Since the complaint appears to be about percentage of data "content" and an attempt to collar any other additional dialogue, either directly or indirectly relevant to the topic inside the post....

I would suggest more a more constructive solution than trying to "engineer" normal human behaviour .

Instead of Draconian measures which will most definitely damage this place, and give pause for folks to post anything...
(and that will be very detrimental...hell...I can't count the number of meandering posts I have come across...and yes they are irritating...hell I am complicit....but I have seen said meandering posts on a topic either hit on a "eureka!", or an "Oh my god! I forgot about "X"! there is a possible solution.."..the human mind does not produce results clinically...but by banter, discussion, meandering down neural pathways of memory...and interaction on this level with others...collar and stomp it out and you threaten this place in ways that one can only imagine...)

Find a way to utilize a better search engine that will hunt for key things pertaining to a query,
code, links, detailed technical terms.
That solves the dilemma which has been the root issue of this place since its inception.

Lets be honest here, without the constant off topic prattle this place would look rather deserted.

Absolutely!
The only solution I think which would be handy would be a technical one:
If people would have the possibility to mark there post with off topic, there could be a filter view for threads. So if you just want to chat with some people you could see the full thread. If you are looking for some information you could reduce the thread to the essentials.

But I don't think the forum platform is capable to do that and even if, there would be a lot of work for the guys who are are making a great job by keeping that platform stable and running.

So I think we should live with that off topic stuff.

Or even better, if others could mark posts as off-topic.
Others are usually more suitable to judge your actions than you are yourself.

Thread name should be "Exclusive trolling on TMO". AND I STILL HOPE YOU WILL FIND A BUYER!!!

Re: Excessive trolling on TMO

Yes, people, why do you have to troll exclusively on TMO? Why can't you be like Ancelad and wish Ariadeno to find a buyer?
