Probably... The refocus function is very interesting, but apart from that it's a rather underwhelming update.

I have read several reviews about m8 but they say the camera of m8 isn't that good. So it ain't the greatest .

it may be the latest but some people never take htc into consideration while buying a smartphone because it is expensive , most of the time its the shamshung crap that people are interested in. And about the link i think its broken, didnot work.

You can thank the TMO auto-censorship feature. To fix it, replace the four asterisks in the URL with letters t, w, a and t, in that order.

As far as I know, there has been only one phone with an optical zoom camera. I always thought that a camera with a phone functionality would be better than the other way around. I say, bring it on again!

Sounds a bit unconfortable to carry in your pocket and make calls with but you must be used to it, with your obsession with large screens :)

Something like that, only a bit more compact (with the lens pulled in when not in use) and with a hardware keyboard.

If anyone asked me why would I not buy a HTC M8, that's because there should be a better camera on the back and not on the front...

That's probably the one that made funny noises if you used the zoom when taking a video. That drawback is apparently what prompted Nokia to look into using a huge 41M pixel sensor to simulate zooming, resulting in the 808 Pureview.

Kangal 2014-04-15 08:19

Re: Latest And Greatest!

Bullseye!
The reason for a large sensor and MP count is to achieve an optical zoom without any moving parts. However Nokia failed such accomplishment. A cheap $99 point N shoot has as much zoom and quality as Nokias flagship or even more.

I think the way forward would be a large sensor that takes like 8MP (sort of like HTCs Ultra Pixels but better) and instead have a OtherHalf attachment lense for Macro and Zoom shots.

Kapture probably means 4K @24fps recording AND KitKat.

That's a nice solution for the riddle. I was wondering about asterisks myself.

I don't like it.

I prefer blocky sides (iPhone 5) for a comfy grip, rather than a larger device with accidental tapping issues.

I'll have to reserve judgement for now. I do use a lot of swipe gestures that start from the screen edge so I'm no sure how this would work out for me.

Re: Latest And Greatest!

Anybody using KitKat play with ART. While still in development, it can significantly improve performance of android app because each app is compiled to native code when it is installed. If you go into developers option in settings on KitKat you can enable this new feature.

EDIT: Not all devices with KitKat have ART (Android Runtime). It is currently available on Galaxy S 5 but not Note 3. Not sure about other devices...

Not worth it at the moment.
I was in talks with some of there engineers, and basically 4.4 was going to be Android 5.0 but they had major setbacks (something along the lines of meeting under-the-hood requirements with visual effects, i dunno).

Anyways the vision for future Android seems to be:
-A new name and number (Android 5.0 Lollipop ?)
-(one of) the latest Linux kernels (3.9)
-Merging elements of the Android and Linux kernel (single branch)
-gcc 4.8
-64-bit support
-ART*
-support for real MultiTasking (no for phones, maybe for phablets, in-discussion for tablets)

The version that runs ART is (certainly) likely to be changed. So those people porting Apps... will have to do it again. Why do you think the crazy popular Xposed Module Framework hasn't been ported? They were discussing making a leap (which I think is best), but instead they're looking for iterations of these things.

So we might get the new ART and 64-bit suppot in the next revision, and maybe gcc 4.7. Then we'll get gcc 4.8 and the new kernel after that. Then we'll get a minor iteration where these things play better together, and play better in the OS and SDK. And then we'll probably get a user inter-facelift and Multitasking for (large) devices.

Then gradually we'll see this evolve more and more, especially when it comes to integrating everything with Google's services. And integration regarding Phones, Tablets, Notebooks, TV's, Consoles, Cars, Wearables. Its a weird strategy but Google's too much of a behemoth for them to fail.

Here is a video showing ART in action on a Galaxy 5. Quite impressive although most of the apps shown are google ones so I would expect it to work best for this case however the author of video says all their apps seem to work much better so it may not be that far away and, indeed, useable for some. Also, I can see how folks would be concerned about Xposed not working yet. However, once it is working, if you made a change via Xposed module, you would have to recompile stuff so that would mean much longer times to implement change. Not just a simple reboot.
