N900 sound quality is excellent
 

I am using sennheiser cx300 headphones and its as smooth as butter with very little hiss. I am hearing notes I couldn't hear in my ipod touch. Also, it appears they increased the volume range in 1.2. Now if only they will add an equaliser?.

It is good if you are not browsing heavy websites at the same time. I hate the stuttering audio when viewing sites like engadget :(

I Couldn't agree more. I ripped some of my CDs to flac, installed extra decoders, and I am using my N900 in my car with the car sound system, it's better then the pioneer built in CD.

BTW, sennheiser CX500 are 10 times better then the 300, and not much more expensive. You should try them, I had 2 pairs of 300, and now I own 3 pairs of 500.

jusk checked it out on play.com. The white one is 4 pounds cheaper but I womnt buy it lest I be mistaken for an iPod user - hahha. thanks a lot for the tip. I love this communtiy ! I learn new stuff all the time.

sound quality is v good
but sound volume through speakers is very low.

is it possible to encrease the amplifiction through sound card settings

LOL - It's funny you mention that, I do listen to a whole lot of music.

- In the morning while I get ready to work, with home theater sound system.
- In the car with Very nice sound system (subwoofer, componenets, amps the whole deal)
- At work, CX500
- At collage CX500 ( Different Pair )
- Evenings when GF is sleeping, CX500 ( 3rd Pair )
- On top of it all, I play guitar, for 10 years, usually LOUD.

So I went to check my hearing, and it's great! above normal quality in all frequencies. Weehee!

much improved since 1.2. I have 2 instances of engadget in browser and music plays without fuss. Perhaps engadget fixed their bloated site.

Well it is a bit better but still stuttering alot while browsing in the bus for example. There has been lots of talk in bugs.maemo about this but only some effort. It is slowly but painfully becoming a deal breaker for me :(

N900 sound quality from 3.5 mm jack is outstanding. I have the Archos 402 and Zen 32gb flash players and the N900 is just as good as both of them, which are great.

Though I use the "Incredible" as my phone (hate the name, luv the phone), my N900 always goes with me as my main media player :)

Do you use ogg codec? Ogg sounds nice,but none of mp3 bitrates do

I use MP3 and tend to be picky. Still, "picky" is in the mind of the beholder.

Some re-nicing of processes should help on this I think, but I'm not sure how exactly to do it the right way. Audio playing should have one of the most important priorities IMHO! Also of course overclocking might help - I've enoyed the speed with kernel 37 @ 500-950MHz without any problems.

I see some have Sennheiser, and I agree the CX500 is very nice but sennheiser lacks at the lower pitches IMHO. I use my N900 heavily for media e.g. music, so I want a good quality sound. I tried the equalizer on the 3rd party music player but I didnt like the app. After some research I bought Philips SHE8500 wich has excellent bass. Also high and mid sound excellent, comparable with a decent hi-fi home setup. Now I don't need an EQ, but going back to sennheiser feels like downgrading my music experience ;) I agree there are some better but nowhere near the price of this one.

For more volume try alsamixer in xterminal

Code:

alsamixer -c0

The row on the left is the headset. If it is lower than 100 you could raise it.
