N900 Camera: Operation Failed

Recently purchased a N900, camera was working fine the first few weeks, but now all of a sudden the camera app wont work. I tried restarting the device and it still wont work.

Every time i try to use the camera i get "Operation Failed". Everything else works fine.

additional info- i live in Canada so i am not sure how the support goes for this phone since it hasn't been released in Canada yet.

I hope to get this issue fixed quickly, because i am losing my patience for nokia.. waited for 4 months for this stupid phone, and for it break this quickly is a huge disappointment and is extremely frustrated. Not to mention a waste of $800 bucks...

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

Have you tried a total reflash of the unit? I've not got the greatest experience with the N900, but generally when a camera feature refuses to work, a complete reflash/software update gets it sorted.

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

i am trying to do that at the moment. i am hoping that it will work again after the flash. but does it void your warranty if you reflash your device?

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

Corrupted memory card maybe..

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

No, your warranty is fine, with phones like this its inevitable they'll be times when they need to be reflashed. See how you get on with that first. If that doesnt solve it, possibly a hardware issue. But id be fairly sure a good old reflash will do it

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

thanks a lot for the info Luke.

vode- im not using any external memory card.

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

^ using the nokia software to restore and update the n900, the camera still says "Operation Failed".

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

Same thing happened to me just 10 minutes after trying my phone for the first time! haha.

Got the same error as you. What i did was to plug the device into my pc and choose the mass storage setting. Then i just formatted the 32gb partition via my computer. Now be sure to backup anything u got stored in there, like the default pictures, videoes and so on.

Worked like a charm, and the camera once again worked.
What caused the issue for me was corrupted files after a failed copy from pc to device.

Regards!

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

^Sounds smart, but once you reformat the device how will the nokia software recognize it? Any steps?

Thanks a lot! Smart thinking!

Kevven 2010-01-03 02:38

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

Well the 32gb really has nothing to do with the storage that stores the N900 internal workings. That partition is called eMMC if i recall right. So formatting the 32gb drive does nothing but clean it. It pops up after a format just like before. At least it did when i tested it.

Only thing i noticed was that the icon for the device when connected to the pc was gone. It was replaced with one of those genereal removeable disc icons found in windows.

But im 99% sure that a format of the 32gb storage will solve your problem :)

Kevven 2010-01-03 02:45

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

Edit!!

Before formatting. Try the following.
Connect the decive to your computer. Choose mass storage on the N900. And when the device pops up on you computer, right click it- choose properties-tools and error check it.

This might solve the issues faster and more user friendly!

If not, then a format is for the best :)

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

i've tried that didn't work. Error checking first.

The first format failed, im trying again the second time. If it doesnt format what should i do? Did i void the warranty?

grumps312 2010-01-03 03:38

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

^the second format didnt work, but i did a quick format and it worked. And i used the Nokia Software uploader to update the thing again, i hope it works this time...

I had the same problem. Solved it by chmaging the setting to save pictures to Mass Memory instead of the memory card.

I wonder what the underlying problem was here. Filesystem corruption?

You know what..., I'm having that same "Operation Failed" message too! How do I change the settings to save pictures to "Mass Memory?" Thank you kindly!

Hello,

did you install the updates?

I had the save error, already the first update fixed it nicely for me.

Bye

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

Kevven's suggestion works! ;)

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
Reason: Failed write error at some point when connected via USB and transferring files.
Solution: Run a checkdisk from your computer.

1. Connect your N900 via USB in MASS STORAGE MODE
2. Open My Computer (in Windows)
3. Right click on either the N900 drive icon or the MICROSD card icon (whichever save directory is causing camera error)
4. Click Properties
5. Click the Tools tab on the top
6. Click Check Now under Error-Checking
7. Make sure 'Automatically fix file system errors' is checked ('Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors' checkbox recommended, but not necessary)
8. Click Start

This has nothing to do with Kernels that are riddled with errors or FCam/BlessN900 applications that install bad drivers.

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

I have tried all the so called solutions to this problem decribed in this post...

All failed

I have discovered the REAL reason for these problems....
(after Nokia replaced my phone and it still didn't work, I tried my girlfriends SD card which was the same as mine, with no success. I decided to try a different card).

You need class 6 micro SD card....

I was using a 16GB card and I could not use the camera in the save to SD card mode.... I also could not watch 350MB xvid videos on the card. Internal Memory worked fine....

I swapped it for a brand new Class 6 8GB card and it WORKS PERFECTLY

I am going to try a new class 10 16GB card as soon as I can afford it.... or wait for a 32GB class ten when available...

Will post my results.....

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

I had the same experience with the camera AFTER installing the kernel-powerv40 by titan and i have to say it has unearthed a lot of compatibiliy issues when it comes to camera based applications.

what i opted to do was install "Desktop Command Execution Widget" or DCEW to automate the process of entering a series of commands in the Xterm to play around with the CPU clock while kernel-powerv40 was installed.

I had a few accessible DCEWidgets on one of my desktops so i can just tap on one to change the CPU clock and voltage. One is loading the ideal kernel to overclock, one is to underclock (when just playing music), one is to maximum overclock (1.1GHz) and the other is loading the default clock speed (600MHz).

When taking pictures or video recording, overclocked kernels tend to produce the error Operation failed on FCAM and the built in camera app. (not 100% sure but it does in mine)

Whenever i record a video, i tap on the widget that loads the default speed clock and i could record for more than 10 minutes. when it is ovrclocked though, 1 minute into the recordng and it stops with the operation failed error...

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

Are there any more tries?
I did all bellow:
1. Disk check
2. Disk Format
3. Nokia Software Update
4. Reflashed the device

Miine worked well after the software update but in 20 minutes it started again.
No hope for my n900???

Hello

I had the same problem after installing the fcam application and here is what worked for me.
1. Uninstall fcam application
2. Install the Blessn900 application
3. Restart

Hope that works for you

I just overclocked my n900 yesterday and now I have this operation failed problem. I know it was related to my over clocking but is there any other fix or should I just return my phone to the normal speeds?

I don't want to have to change any settings everytime I attempt to use he camera and would rather have it quick and easy.

Wait for titan to fix the kernel.
I've got the same problem since installing a titan kernel >42.

had a similar problem when i installed the Fcamera and bless N900 apps
uninstalled them, restarted and was back to normal....

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

Here the same problem. Almost 100 % sure that the problem is the kernel power, cause I update it today, and it doesnt work. Another clue that prove that the kernel is the problem is that i have 3 entries in my n900 boot screen:
1.Maemo original kernel
2.Maemo titan's kernel
3.and nitdroid

In the OC kernel, doesnt work. In Nokia kernel works perfectly...so i guess we have to wait for updates..

ioan 2010-11-11 22:07

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

I had the same problem but I couldn't wait for updates because I need both, the camera and the kernel-power (for IPv6), so I installed the older version that works with both (2.6.28-maemo40).
So here is what I did:
1. uninstalled the kernel-power as described here: http://wiki.maemo.org/Kernel_Power#Deinstallation

2. downloaded on N900 the following 3 files:
http://repository.maemo.org/extras-d...mo40_armel.deb
http://repository.maemo.org/extras-d...mo40_armel.deb
http://repository.maemo.org/extras-d...mo40_armel.deb

3. Install the 3 debs:
dpkg -i kernel-power/kernel-power_2.6.28-maemo40_armel.deb
dpkg -i kernel-power-modules_2.6.28-maemo40_armel.deb
dpkg -i kernel-power-flasher_2.6.28-maemo40_armel.deb

Now you have the old kernel-power installed that works fine with the camera.

same here, the problem came up after updating the power kernel...

ghosty.be 2010-11-14 03:03

Re: N900 Camera: Operation Failed

I think there was something very wrong with the power kernel released around 10 or 11-11, I got also problems with camera (all cam applications) and got screen-glitches in menus ... (sometimes so bad I could not see the menu)
Today I had a new update for power kernel and this fixed everything (you just need to be aware that also U-boot is implemented now in the power-kernel so you will see a U-boot when restarting your N900 after the update)
