Artists and designers - I need help: sheep!

Ok, I don't quite know where to start with this, but lcuk suggested I start a thread and see who bites.

I had an idea for a simple accelerometer game involving using the tipping to pen cartoon sheep. It seems to have picked up a bit of interest, and there are now a number of possible sheep/sheepdog type games under discussion in this thread.

I can see in my head what it looks like, but I am sadly a total klutz at any sort of drawing/art. So I need some clever person to come onboard and draw us the graphics.

We need:

A pasture: green, a few flowers, some sheep pens (three sided, open in opposite directions).

A wolf: small, dark, four legged, able to face four directions.

An icon (I see a sheepdog face but it needn't be)

Most importantly: sheep. The ones in my head are very cute - or even Qt. They need to be able to face all four ways, raise and lower their heads (to eat flowers) and raise and lower their tails to err.. fertilise the pasture.

It all needs to be scalable as the first level puts only 6 sheep in the field (so they can be relatively large) and the highest level uses 20.. so tiny sheep.

Is anyone artistic willing to have a go at drawing for us? Pretty please?

Too bad I suck at drawing anything like animals or humans or anything like that. Otherwise I could have helped :(

Consider yourself lucky. I suck at drawing, period!

Thanks for considering it, though. :)

Oh my, that sounds like a lot of frames.

Re: Artists and designers - I need help: sheep!

lets start simple.

can somebody draw a background.
some grass, some sky and clouds and a sun.

set the scene a little :)

then people can use that template and draw a sheep ontop
800*480 would be perfect.
nice and simple pastel colours

im sure someone with some 'real' talent can do something awesome in Inkscape, this took me a few minutes. Someone with some artsy skills could make something cool.

Sorry about that :p

big sheep is biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig!

Re: Artists and designers - I need help: sheep!

Better too big than too small. Though it doesn't really matter if it's a vector. Big vector is small vector up close.

Re: Artists and designers - I need help: sheep!

if someone can draw a field it can be used to as a background in an app i just pushed to extras-devel this morning
its called (surprisingly) sheepdrawing
and lets you draw sketches over the top of a selectable image (hence me wanting a background scene)

there is a submit button which runs an at the moment bare script that someone can work on to push completed sketches/pictures directly into this thread (it needs wget magic that i havent time to sort out cos I am in work today..)
i also put back selectable pen color, did a bit of testing last night.

ie get some shell friend to muck around automatic submitting, and we can all play pushing sheep pictures (or anything else..)

i request tmo username/password/threadid as parameters and push those to the script along with filenames of sketch and finished image)
it really does just need the bit of glue to push to server

My Shot at the Field let me know if you see any changes you want. I have it in svg format and in png. Heres both. Took about 10 minutes I could do better with more time. I think ground needs some color variations and maybe less hills.

utterly silly, and needs thicker lines and the upload script working..
also needs lots of ux love :)

U guys are mental :D
On my department, I have the accelerometer library ready (from other project), so two lines of code and we can move the sheep with our device :)

lcuk 2009-12-11 15:44

Re: Artists and designers - I need help: sheep!

heh hopbeat, cool
the accelerometer part is simple (as we know)
it needs to be able to load in a bitmap and do collision detection/avoidance
sheep must "prefer" to be in the low valleys and will need real tip of the device to get up the hills

ive been doing some testing using this and trying to get the "sheep" to stay in the low (dark) areas and to follow along.

the algo is a bit tricky but my particle subsystem works well (liqflow with just ~10 bigger particles instead of hundreds)

@Texrat, everyone is doing penguins, so we are sticking with 'cute sheep' :)

Hmm, do we actually have any idea of what are doing or is it just happy coding/designing? (not that I have anything against :) )

[edit] @lcuk, your amazing (as always :) )

10,000 sheep drawings here:

http://www.thesheepmarket.com/

I'd imagine the artist might be willing to listen to a request for CC licensing for use here. If that looks interesting, I'll drop him a line.

Really interested in getting this going. Any one got any ideas for the background? I assume you want that sort of view and not just an overhead view of some grass.

How about one black sheep for bonus points? :)

we dont know yet
what if there were different level s with different perspective
or even different games
we do not know the final vision - that is the idea, if someone comes up with a great layout of style or engine that we can use graphics created here, all the better!

The layout in my head was a field from about a 60 degree angle - so ou don't see sky or sun, but you see the pens (and sheep) on a bit of a slant. To be honest, in my head the persepctive is off, cos I see the pens on a slant, but the sheep side on.

Excuse the ghastly drawing, but I sketched it up like this.

Your sheep are absolutely brilliant. Seriously cute sheep. (unlike mine)

In fact, one could almost call it Qt-sheep if it ends up coded in Qt.

Thanks for running with it guys! I am excited about this. :)

Everyone's herding sheep (maybe penguins too). :p

I'm just playing with Kathy anyway. Surely it wouldn't be any fun to herd unherdable critters. Like crabs... porcupines... sugar gliders... cats... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk7yqlTMvp8

Actually, if we start with something simple like sheep (which are relatively easy to herd, lead etc) one could evolve a power-player version called 'herding cats' where it wouldn't matter which way you tipped the acceleromoter, they'd do whatever the heck they wanted. Not sure it would make a very rewarding game, though. ;)

I was half-joking. The serious side of me thinks other animals, especially the unherdable variety, would be a riot.

So thoughts...

- what about upper levels? cats would be great. So would raptors.

- what about unlocking special animals with achievements?

- what about random critters that add a little spice? For bonus points you have to make a crab stay with the sheep, and he has to be herded sideways.

- what about landmines? Only instead of blowing up they're jack-in-the-boxes that scare the beejeesus out of sheep

- the black sheep suggestion by another poster is brilliant. They do as they please, in fact a really good black sheep makes sure to screw up whatever the others are doing...

Ah, the fun you could have with this concept...

EDIT: don't forget about the Noah's Ark level! Oh man that would be killer... :D

RevdKathy 2009-12-11 17:44

Re: Artists and designers - I need help: sheep!

Not sure about landmines, but I did wonder whether you'd lose a sheep if you tipped it so the sheep ran into a wolf and got eaten...

A black sheep who always runs counter to the acceleromoter might be fun, too, for the advanced level. The first thing you have to work out is that when you tip the device down right, the sheep runs up the screen. Just one black sheep - bonus points if you get him penned.

The concept has load and loads of potential for extras... but can we try to get the basic idea first... then you can all add extra levels with your cats, black sheep, landmines, mint sauce etc.
