I hope this is what the designs end up being as they look very good.
If I were to guess the device is a developer device.
Edit: will be announced in 4 days and I will post updates as they come.

I agree i wish devices were less round that is why I liked the design of the HTC One and Optimus G.

Re: Ubuntu Edge

I concur its a sexy Ubuntu design!

I still acknowledge the iPhone 4 (S/5) with the best design out of any phone...
...in terms of corners (don't eat up much room, don't stab you)
...in terms of sides (square/flat makes it easy to hold and maximises grip)
...in terms of branding (everything is at the back, front is clean)

and that's it. But its patented :(

A way forward on that design would be to...
1- Front Stereo speakers (I've said this for years, HTC One listens)
2- Almost no bezel on the front (Keep saying this, little do they listen)
3- Glass only front (like the Gnex and the N9)
4- Symmetric style (place 4 hardware buttons on right side, when phone is flipped over nothing's changed)
5- OtherHalf (Jolla's got a great idea, but poor execution. Have a thin phone with small battery that can transform to anything***)
6- Have a KickStand + several forms (little 4ins, to medium 4.6ins, to large 5.2in designs)

Eg/
Original - 7mm, only 1,400mAh battery
Medium attachment - 9mm, 2,600mAh battery
Fat attachment - 13mm, 3,900mAh battery
QWERTY attachment (also comes in different layouts like azerty etc, no need to buy a different phone!)
GAMEpad attachment (something basic like three action buttons, two sets surrounding a pair of PSP-style nubs. Four shoulder pads, maybe use the 4 buttons off the phone?)
MISC attachments (second touchscreens, to LED flash, to novelty sh ites etc etc)

Someone is going to say so I will the bezel needs to be smaller.

Bezels -yep, definitely way too much on each side.

Buttons (Power, Vol-, Vol+) are too small and not have much travel. They would be a pain to get used to.

Not to mention the corners. They can "stab" your palm while using. Won't stab your legs as long as you pocket the phone with the screen towards your body, the angled sides help a little here.

Ubuntu Edge Announced! Pre-Order Opened

Ubuntu Edge smartphone announced with $32 million Indiegogo campaign, aims to hit market in May 2014
Quote:

Ubuntu's smartphone strategy is taking shape today in form of the Edge, which is set to come to market in May of next year, when it'll be available for $830 outright. True to Canonical's community driven roots, the company is turning to crowd-funding to get the device on its feet; to that end, it's launching a campaign on Indiegogo today, which provides early backers the opportunity to snag the phone for $600. According to company founder, Mark Shuttleworth, the Indiegogo strategy isn't meant to compete with its strategy of courting carriers, but rather, it's meant to solve an "innovation gap" that's arisen during its talks with manufacturers.

Key to the Ubuntu Edge is the aim to bridge the cap between mobile phones and PCs. To accomplish that, the Edge will be designed to run a full-fledged Ubuntu desktop operating system alongside Android. While specs are currently tentative, the company is aiming to outfit the Edge with a quad-core CPU, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Meanwhile, the phone itself will sport a 4.5-inch, 1,280 x 720 display that's constructed of sapphire crystal glass, an 8MP rear / 2MP front-facing camera and stereo speakers. As for connectivity, Canonical's eyeing LTE connectivity, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC, along with MHL support for HDTVs and the like.

Hope for bigger and better screen. But they are directly competitor to jolla and both going for 4.5 so the battle is fair.

The price might make a difference (vs. Jolla), it's $600 just for today and $830 afterwards @Indiegogo

Comparing it to Jolla's device it was € 399 ($ ~510) vs € ~460 ($ ~600) [prices calculated on the 1 day deal]...a bunch of neat hardware in the Ubuntu phone.

Re: Ubuntu Phone

Even though I want to move away from Ubuntu post-Mir, this is very tempting. I do want to support open source projects, and I presume other distributions could leverage the same binary blobs the Edge will have.

The $600 package is shifting quite quickly though, 70 sales in 20 minutes, so if you're thinking about it, keep an eye on the number of takers, it's 198/5000 when I made this post.

PS, can we change the thread title to Ubuntu Edge?

Re: Ubuntu Phone

I'm sold to Sailfish, especially when it comes to UI, but hardware wise Ubuntu Phone is much more like it.
I would be happy to pay +1000 euros just to get GS4 like base hardware on a Ubuntu Mobile or Jolla. Just make the hardware your own and don't care about the expense. Would there be market for it outside of me and couple of other weirdos? Probably not.

I have now joined Ubuntnu's scam campaign too. The dual boot made me do it. And you can't have enough phones.

Ubuntu Phone hardware + Jolla OS = <3

Would that be possible from a technical aspect?

Fuzzillogic 2013-07-22 16:30

Re: Ubuntu Edge

I really like the concept of running full desktop on mobile, by just docking the thing using standard wiring. The N9 has Easy Debian, but is too slow to be practical, and lacks HDMI (and I never succeeded in pairing and using a BT mouse to it) I was kinda hoping Jolla would be the first to make this practical, but now I can only hope they will at least provide the necessary hardware to make it possible.

I'm not really keen on Ubuntu lately, they are losing touch with their community.

If that is the edge you are looking for I say, you should go for android.

I don't think neither jolla or Ubuntu will be as great as they say.

Love sailfish, but Ubuntu device Looks cooler and is more exclusive(if it is ever built).

The only thing that makes me pissed is that they don't announce the battery size!! that is the same lame mistake as Jolla.

Dave999 2013-07-22 18:25

Who has supported Ubuntu edge?

I put in an order for this exclusive futuristic spaceship and hope to see it in may. Anyone else supported ubuntu or I'm the only one here at TMO?

Love to run my own shipping thread all by myself.

In fact, I don't use android so I don't care about the apps :D

But i'm dubtful: when you launch your desktop operating system, will you still be able to use your smartphone (I mean, will I get my phone calls at least?!)

DUAL BOOT! WTF? Are they to scared going all the way Ubuntu?

I want comanys who comes with something FRESH. Not companys copycats even the marketing campaign is looking like something coming from Apple.

Now they make me even more sure its time for me throw ubuntu on my work computer and home machine in trashbin
