Quake 3 on N900

Hi everybody. I was reading some tweets where some guys reported that they are playing quake 3 with tv out on the n900.

Is it possible to play Quake 3 with 3d accelleration on the n900?

Yes, it is.

Wow, thats really cool. I hope my n900 arrives just in time :)

Will Quake 3 be availible in the Application Catalogue, on maemo.org or can it be downloaded somewhere else?

thanks in advice.

That is unknown for the moment. I suspect it was just done as a test... but I'm sure someone will eventually put it into Extras, but without the data files.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

I know the original developer of Quake was a big Symbian fan, and ported Quake III, I believe it was (not a big gamer), to the N95's OMAP platform. Being the Nokia geek he is, I would expect the same for the N900, though I haven't heard of him saying so.

You mean John Carmack?
Id Software is working hard on iphone, i really hope that they may give a shake to maemo and N900

Re: Quake 3 on N900

So, as some guys were already tweeting about playing q3 on n900 i believe they will make it available, of course without data files, but the client. Man, can't wait for my device...

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Since we had Quake II on N810, which has no 3D acceleration, and as far as I remember, Quake's 3D engine is opensource, there should be no problem porting Quake III to N900, all you would need of course are the game files, which are not open, but if you have the original game, you can use those.

nowave7 2009-09-15 07:48

Re: Quake 3 on N900

I have to say though that playing Quake II on N810 was not a pleasant experience. It's a bit hard to control the movement on d-pad with left hand, and looking and shooting with right hand. Or at least it was for me. :D

Re: Quake 3 on N900

OTOH playing Quake I on the N800 was great fun. The game felt just as it was made for this device. The combination of D-Pad and stylus control was very good on the N800 in Quake.

Stylus control?! Stylus control... Damn! Never thought of that! :o

EDIT: Just tried playing Q2 with stylus and it dramatically improves playability!

I just want to know that display effect of Quake III on N900!

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Yeah! Me too :) But I think arrow keys are much better than a dpad. i played gba on my E71 and the dpad was annoying.

Accelerometer to walk, tapping the screen to aim and fire. Obviously. :P

The only issue is that Quake just isn't Quake without frantic jumping and stylish manoeuvres, and you just can't replicate this properly on a touchscreen (neither on a gamepad). There are some interesting free games that run on the Q3 engine though (no extra data files required):

In the game Bounce Evolution (on the N900), shaking the device "up" (accelerometer) makes the character jump. "Shake gestures" could be coded for things like strafing, etc.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

I would prefer:

- Strafing with the arrow keys
- Forward Backward with the arrow keys
- looking: stylus OR keys on the left side
- shooting: camera or volume button on the top!
- jumping: space :)

You need to experience the accelerometer. ;)

Yes but... let's be realistic. :)

I think the accelerometer should be used sparingly as best, I already laugh too much when I see iPod Touch users that look like they are trying to give their iPod a happy ending

mouse + keyboard + usb hub (or bluetooth!) = FRAG TIME!

I have played quake II on the n810 this way, and with 3D it should render in full 800 x 480.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Quake3 works in the N900 and is quite spectacular. I coud write a lot but I prefer to keep the juice for the developers in-house that did this just for fun. They have a demo in the Maemo Summit, on Friday afternoon.

I will let them know about this thread just in case they haven't noticed already.

And indeed, the problem for a full release are the data files. If someone has a good and easy solution we are interested (including contacting the developers with something more casual and direct than a corporate email sent to the mailbox in their website.

The experience is quite good, so perhaps they are indeed interested.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

please publish the souce code now. It can be probably used to make openarena and other FOSS games using quake3 or ioquake3 engine available for N900.

So solution for quake3 datafiles is not use them.

How about Open Arena http://openarena.ws/

It's based on q3 engine I believe and free

EDIT: MIKKOV beat me to it, :D:D:D:D

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Until now this has been the hobby work done by a couple of really busy guys in the Core team. I know they are still working on functionality and stability. I wouldn't be surprised if they want to wait until the Summit demo to release their work.

No need to insist about the goodness of openness since they are free software developers themselves. :)

Note that product managers or any business role were totally out of this pet project. All the merits go for the developers.

zerojay 2009-09-16 03:11

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Open Arena's good, but please make sure that we can use our original Quake 3 data files as well.

Can't wait to try it out at Summit. :)

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Unless I'm mistaken Quake 3 engine is open sourced, but the game itself isn't so you probably can't include the full game datafiles.
But including the demo version datafiles shouldn't be a problem?

yea..and everyone can put in full game files if they have the game...

Quake III running on the OpenPandora, a game console with Linux running on the same hardware as the N900

I prefer Quake 1/QuakeWorld over Quake 3. If someone have time please port modern ezQuake client.

It is open source and still being actively developed and runs on linux/freebsd/mac os x/windows.

Check it out here http://ezquake.sourceforge.net/

A quakeworld client with opengl support would be awesome. Although open areana with network support would be awesome also.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Also of note (if not a little off topic), a full PSX emu running on pandora @ 550MHz! This should mean that we can emulated PSX games on the N900, and possibly N64 as well (speculation)! AMAZING!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkbFd...eature=related

Check it out: The video has showings of Castlevania Symphony of the night, Ridge Racer 4, Resident Evil (3?), Gran Turismo, and some others that I don't recognize. This is a good showing, and all the titles run very smooth.

This makes the N900 one helluva gaming platform, especially considering that the keypad can double as a make-shift controller. Anyone up for playing chrono-cross? :) :) :)

}:^)~

Re: Quake 3 on N900

well, i have a PSP, so i don't really need a PSX emu, but im sure somebody would be grateful for sure :) i just hope to see as many windows games (or exclusive Maemo games) on the N900 as much as possible...

The demo was made an hour ago and people were impressed. Oliver said that he will try to upload the packages this weekend before the Summit finishes.
