Some explanations please...

Hey pals,

As I was reading at maemo.org talk I read about some stuff that kinda confused me:

1- CSSU
2- kernel powers or so...
3- Nitdroid

What are kernel powers?
Can I install all the three applications above all together?
Will these applications affect the performance of the n900?become slow or so...
How come a maemo OS become an android OS?

I would be really thankful for any member that might make the image clear for me.

Re: Some explanations please...

1 CSSU is an update to the software ..nokia no longer supports this phone so now the community does there is a stable version that is recommend for new users

2 kernel power is an update to the cpu drivers ... this more for a power user than your average user

3 Android has alot of apps available but again is more for a power user

I suggest reading a lot more before using 2 or 3

Hey Mike Fila

What do you mean by power user?

Besides, any answers for the remaining questions?

Mike Fila 2011-12-21 21:11

Re: Some explanations please...

A power user is some one who has knowledge of doing things manually. Entering code and manipulating the inner workings of the N900 without help of a graphical user interface.

Yes they are meant to enhance/speed up the N900 but if you dont know what you are doing (power user) they will likely slow it down or make it unusable all together.

Aha then for sure it is not me... I am not a so professional user at all:)
I am so new to such things.

But, I really like to try the nitdroid...So, you don't advise me to do so?

Besides, Is it true that I can install any version that I like of the android OS using nitdroid?

Mike Fila 2011-12-21 21:44

Re: Some explanations please...

read read and read some more androind installation is very well documented ...it's definitly achivable but it is not simple nor something that should be attempted on just a whim

there are many versions available but the newest version will have fixes for the most common problems. the first post of the thread is always updated so that the most current version will be listed there. Use the power search funtion on the right column to search for nitdroid installation.

btw nitdroid is mainly for apps they have not been able to get the telephone functions working correctly

ok I read the thread you gave me in the link above... It increased my fears more yet explained some issues. But, ammyt is so sure of it's stability...
It's ok if I cannot call or send messages since I will be using maemo most of the times and boot to android when I need so....

But ,as you said, I will read more and more about the whole procedure before i give it a try.

Re: Some explanations please...

I just read somewhere that to install nitdroid I must reflash my phone before and that I should create a backup before. But, they said that conversations from third party applications can't be saved...is that true? Then if I have some msn pecan or haze conversations...they'll be lost??Did anyone of you guys create a backup and lost such conversations before?

Besides I was just wondering: is nitdroid a legal permission from the android company, or an unlegal haking, or such applications don't need a permission? If such applications don't need permission then this would allow professionals to create any door to any OS they want without the permission of the OS owners or companies.

thankfull for any answers!!:)

Nothin' illegel here hun' da power of open source!
Secondly, it is -advisable- that you create a backup, and that you reflash your phone using the modified eMMC image (I know it sounds hard but it ain't). Then just run the autoinstaller I have created and you'll have NITDroid in no more than 20 minutes.

Hey ammyt

But I mean if it is open source then wouldn't this allow some geniuses to create an application that boot other OS on n900...maybe such as iphone OS ....

Ok I will do a backup...but I was asking if the third party conversations such as mns pecan or haze conversations will be lost or not?because I read it somewhere that they will be lost and I really don't want to lose my msn conversation.

btw ... brilliant work ammyt....when I read about nitdroid I couldn't beleive that it was possible to boot 2 OS on one phone!! nice work man:D

You seriously need to do some reading, seriously.
iOS is closed source.
Flashing your device will wipe it clean of everything and return it to the stockiest stocky stock way it cam when you first had bought it.

yeah I need much of reading .... that's what am doing ... am so new here and I am trying to learn as much as I can for my n900...

Ok, you didn't get my point... I understand that it will return my phone to the stock form... that's why I will do a backup... yet my question is does the backup include the msn conversations?

Virtuality 2011-12-23 17:42

Re: Some explanations please...

What I meant in the previous post is that when I am doing a backup to my phone there is an options that says : "Conversations and Calender"...ok if I click on this option, will it also backup my msn pecan and haize conversations? or it will only backup the SMSs?

I am asking this question because I don't want to lose my msn conversations after reflashing my phone because they are so important for me...

Besides, guys I don't have the CSSU (neither the testing nor the stable)...so now I decide to install the CSSU stable. But, also I want to install NITdroid. So, when I do a reflash...should I install NITdroid first and then CSSU ?or it doesn't matter which one do I install first?

Again, thanks for you guys for any answer for these 2 questions:)

Re: Some explanations please...

My advice is that you put off installing Nitdroid as long as possible. You don't need it; it won't give you a better device; and it can get you in a lot of trouble.

As far as backups go -- there are two backup programs, Backup and Backupmenu. The first comes from Nokia; the last is better, faster, easier, and more complete. (I personally use both, but when it comes to restoration, I almost always rely on Backupmenu.)

Aha ... maybe you are right ... especially that I am a new user...
However, where can I get Backupmenu?from maemo.org?
And will "Backupmenu" save the msn conversations?

Besides, pal do you advice me to install CSSU as being a new user?

geneven 2011-12-23 20:59

Re: Some explanations please...

Yes, Backupmenu saves everything. You get it from the extras-devel repository, which is available to all users.

CSSU has a "stable" version now, so it should work fine for you. I don't think it is essential, frankly, but it is safe. If you pine for programs to switch from horizontal to vertical display, CSSU is the way to go. It was never particularly dangerous even before it became stable, in my experience.

Re: Some explanations please...

use youtube to see applications running on N900 eg CSSU, before installing.

I have never installed it, never need portrait mode.
If your going to add random apps to your phone, either get another phone and use the N900 as a hacking device, because you'll be restoring a lot.

And you google, youtube first.. ask a question here as a last resort.. and you'll be a master one day!

Great, then i'll download cssu stable for now.

However, when I got to download "Backupmenu" from the applications manager a message is appearing that says : "APPLICATION LIST PARTIALLY REFRESHED.SOME CATALOGUES UNAVAILABLE.CHECK CATALOGUE DETAILS"

And when I go to check catalogue details the failed catalogues are : Maemo extras-devel, Mozilla multi beta catalog, and Mozilla multi catalog. So, backupmenu is not appearing in the list to download.

On the other hand, when I go to "faster application manager", backupmenu is present , but when I try to download it the following message appears : "Some of your packages have unmet dependencies which could not be fixed".

So, by this I can't download backupmenu and so many applications.

Have any idea what is going wrong?

Yes you are right youtube always made it easier for me.
As for bringing another phone than n900 ...I find it unlikely because I still hadn't got bored from it ... I've seen so many new phones but still enjoy n900 a lot.

Thanks for the advice man:)

Probably a couple of things, one a typo in how you set the repositories up. Common typos are freemantle for fremantle or caps where lower case is meant.

When I am setting up repositories, I go to

http://www.nokiadistrict.com/page/19/?s=repositories

from my N900 and click on the links that set up the repositories for me. You would need to delete the repositories as you have set them up now, of course.

I tried to do as you told me but it still didn't work.

However, when I clicked on the extras-devel, this message showed:
"http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/dists/fremantle/free/binary-armel/packages.gz Hash some mismatch"

Pal can you realize whats wrong?

There are some packages missing but nothing too serious.
This problem usually occurs when there is a bad cached copy or the repository is being updated.

Not much you can do. It should go away on its own. If you still want to try something try:

rm -R /var/lib/apt/lists/repository.maemo.org_extras*
apt-get autoclean

Then go to: (geneven's link) http://nokiadistrict.com/repositorie...or-nokia-n900/
and readd the repositories.

Edit: It is more sensible to try with a differenet Wi-Fi connection. Preferibly from a different ISP.

First I'd like to thank you for your help!

But the problem is now with me for more than a month and still it didnt go away by it self!!

And now after I did a reflash it became more annoying because I want to download so many applications.

Anw, what is the final command u gave me supposed to do?

Thanks again for you!

Well it will remove all the extras repositories. Then you can readd them. Have you tried with different Wi-Fi connections?

There are some packages missing but nothing too serious.
This problem usually occurs when there is a bad cached copy or the repository is being updated.

Not much you can do. It should go away on its own. If you still want to try something try:

rm -R /var/lib/apt/lists/repository.maemo.org_extras*
apt-get autoclean

Then go to: (geneven's link) http://nokiadistrict.com/repositorie...or-nokia-n900/
and readd the repositories.

Edit: It is more sensible to try with a differenet Wi-Fi connection. Preferibly from a different ISP.

Ok I entered the "remove command" you gave then I re-entered the repository details manually. This solved the problem for the following catalogues:

1- Community SSU
2- Extras

So, I was able to download CSSU!

But, the following catalogues didn't update:

1- Extras-Testing
2- Extras-Devel
3- maemo.org

Then, after sometime the extras catalogue (which worked earlier), failed again to update!!

That is what happened. Anw, thanks for the command that allowed me to download CSSU!
Still, I wish to solve the rest of the problems!
Any other trick?
