Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

Does this support data compression like Opera Mini?

The real rendering was a bit intensive at least for N95 as it was constantly whining about "low memory" all the time if you had a few tabs open.

not to mention Opera Turbo, great if you don't have an unlimited dataplan, or a fast connection.
( I posted this reply using Opera on N900 by the way :)

edit, feedback: the interface works very well, the only gripe i have so far is that the kinetic scrolling does not feel as fast as MicroB. The 'friction' is probably set lower there.

Ooops .. flash not supported :(

I couldn't update the catalogue, so couldn't install Opera. Perhaps server overload, since everyones trying to download ?

No, this is a full web browser, unlike Opera Mini. It does however support Opera Turbo, which provides similar benefits.

Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

Sounds great, I'll see how it works. We're starting to get quite a collection of browsers.

A lot of the time I use my N900 on a 2G connection and at least on my E71 Opera was still quite fast even on such low speed network, so maybe this could be my low-bandwith browser.

Yep, and the setting doesnt seems to save my bookmark are gone. I also notice you can't remove bookmarks, longpress reveals a menu but then it disappear.

You can; after the long press, do not slide, but release your finger/stylus, and press the menu option. It works the same way with a long press on a link (open in new window :)

Are you using leaked PR1.2 build??

Hi. If you haven't figured that out yet, I'm one of the developers behind this.

To those of you having the problems that settings are reset: Does it manage to create a "/home/user/.opera" folder when it is run? If not, what happens if you create that folder manually? ("mkdir .opera" in a terminal window)

I just tried removing opera and all my settings, but could not reproduce the issue here.

Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

While we do have many browsers to choose from already, I'm thankful that you guys have jumped into the mix. More options are always welcome from a user point-of-view. I hope you guys can make this a great browser for the N900.

Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

There's portrait VKB. Didn't notice that on the first go

joppu 2010-05-11 07:51

Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

Man, I love the portrait browsing on this, complete with the vertical virtual keyboard. When you fix the profile saving issue and the battery sucking, this will probably become my primary browser. The Turbo -option really speeds up the browsing on 2/3g and the scrolling is really smooth.

Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

Just ...awesome
Opera was the best think on windows mobile for me - and now we have it on maemo :)
(Btw: how long takes to port it on android ? two years ?)

Bug report: settings are not stored after standart or maemo turn of. Next time loading with defaults.

+ finger press hold menu didnt apear (like text selection on/of).

Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

I also couldn't install using app manager. It says "package not found"
so i downloaded the deb from here "http://deb.opera.com/maemo/pool/non-free/o/opera-mobile/" and installed it.

Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

Great!! Opera is my favourite browser. On my pc Opera is default browser and in my N73 I use opera mini. Now in N900 this is great news.Lets hope that there will be a official release.

silvermountain 2010-05-11 07:57

Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

The Diablo install of Opera Mobile does have a 14Meg footprint which feels a tad much. Will try to see if it can be 'justified' :)

Opera = best browser in the world!

I want to thank you opera people personally! Thank you!

mehdiE 2010-05-11 08:01

Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

Wow - you've really made my day!

This is the first decent alternative to the built-in browser for the N900 I've seen. It's really fast. Seems faster at displaying the previous page too (and, thank god, it's got a proper Back button instead of that fancy shmanzy Visual History that's pointless most of the time).

Love the single-tap zooming and tabs. I also find the virtual keyboard much more usable than the built-in one (for the purpose of entering urls and search terms at least). Also really like the safari 3-style progress indicator in the address bar.

These were just my first impressions after a few minutes playing with it. I'm sure I'll find a pile of bugs afterwards :) But first impressions is what matters the most. It's so rare to find a piece of software on Maemo that makes you go wow straight away from both the UI and the functionality perspective that you deserve a big praise here.

Really hope that this won't become an abandoned experiment and that you'll keep making this even better.

Edit: just noticed that the virtual keyboard works in portrait mode too! Boy, I'd be happy to pay for this thing if it wasn't free.

Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

oh men i love using browser as fast as this... plus, the virtual keyboard in portrait mode.... Opera rocks.. i hope the will enable the flash on the future updates...

That one didn't fix the setting issues either, it's all same. Strange that you couldn't install from the lab page i had no problem with it.

Re: [Announce] Opera Mobile 10

I have a quick attempt at a workaround for the not saving settings issue. From a terminal window run:
Code:

rm -rf /home/user/.opera
mkdir -p /home/user/.opera/ds

We are working on a fix, though we can't reproduce it on any of the devices we have here in the office, so it may take a while. :(

In the meantime, if those of you who experience the problem would PM me the following info (before doing the workaround above!) it would help us greatly:
- Output from running
Code:

echo $HOME
- Output from running
Code:

ls -la /home/user/.opera
